Yuck...But Dog Warts

FIrst things first: I did have my vet look at our pups wart earlier this summer. Pup is at least 10 and vet said that it’s just an old age wart and he was not at all concerned about malignancy. He in fact did a cell sample of this and one other spot just to be sure.

Anyway, vet said it’s not harmful just might get annoying if pup irritates it - and in fact, we do catch him licking at it here and there and occasionally there will be a tad of blood. The spot is exposed (without fur). Vet said I could use human things on it - like neosporin - which I have been trying to use a bit more regularly the last day - and will continue for a bit.

Vet said he could remove it if we wanted…I kind of hate to put him through that…and I did read that sometimes removing one encourages other warts to grow (???). I have been seeing Vitamin E mentioned several places as something to apply a few times a day for a few weeks to improve the site.

So…anyone with experience with this condition? If you’ve tried VIt E - what strength? Or any other suggestions? Or has your pup had a wart removed??

I promise you our pup is perfectly adorable - except for this darn wart!! (he’s a corgii -beagle mix).

I’ve never had this problem – that is, my dogs haven’t – but good luck to you. I would think getting rid of the thing would be better than having to deal with it forever. It seems to me that the “removing it will cause more to grow” sounds like an old wives’ tale.

My dog has had several rounds of having them taken off. She bugs them until she gets a skin infection. While she is under they take off all the ones they can find. There is one of her forehead that keeps coming back. We won’t do more surgery on her, fingers crossed, because of a heart issue developing (unrelated).

She is a 14 year old cocker mix. Clockers are known to get these things. I don’t know if they really are warts. It is more like skin tags gone wild.

This works on human warts but I have never tried it on a dog yet but not sure why it wouldn’t. I soak a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar and place on a wart and secure with…duct tape lol!! They usually start dying in a day or so and have never had one last more than a week having apple cider vinegar on the wart. It’s a natural product so doubtful it could do any harm to a dog. I would shave the fur to help the duct tape stick and make removal easier. You could research on the internet if anyone has ever tried it on a dog.

So interesting…but I could never shave my dogs fur!!! I don’t think the duct tape would stick nor would he leave it on!

Apparently, there are 2 types of dog warts. The one that mostly affects the youngsters is the viral kind and that can be removed with acids and duct tape. The older dogs develop a different kind of “warts” that are just skin masses like moles and cannot be removed in this way. Hugs to your pup and her human family.

My older dog developed warts. We left them alone, until we moved and a new vet said they should be removed, because they could burst open and cause a serious health issue. So we paid $$$$$ to have them removed. Most grew back. There was a new one near the eye the vet was particularly concerned about, so we paid $$$$$ to have that one subsequently removed. He wanted us to pay $$$$$ to have it biopsied, but I declined, because at that point old dog’s days were numbered.

I’m not sure the removal was warranted or not. They did look somewhat unsightly, but didn’t seem to be causing any issues with my dog.

Yes, he definitely said these are the old age type. It doesn’t seem to bother him greatly - I mean, we catch him licking it a couple of times a day but not constantly and/or he’s not digging at it. Mostly just a little unsightly and my kids are getting on me, “MOM, take him to the vet to get that thing taken care of!!” I guess I’m just not convinced that removing it is necessary or even good if it just grows back!

One of my pups has started getting these too. She’s eleven. Recently one of them got nicked, I think at the groomers. She’s been licking at it ever since. I bought some of that wrap that sticks to itself to cover it up (It’s on her front leg) and that helps. but I think I may still end up at the vet over it. The vet has previously said to ignore them, which is fine with me but apparently not fine with my dog. She’s due for shots so I’ll probably take her in and see what the vet says now.
A friend of mine has a dog that gets them, and has had several removed. I think they remove them when he’s already out having his teeth cleaned.

My pup’s is also on a front leg near the top of the leg - his legs are short (corgi!) so I often wonder if it gets nicked a bit when he’s aiming against a tree. We walk him three times a day so he’s out a lot. I haven’t tried that wrap but any other attempts to cover it up have been futile (bandaid, bandana) I even thought about putting a kids tshirt on him in the house with short sleeves - I think that would cover it up but not interfere with walking. I guess any of these are temporary solutions - the wart isn’t likely to go away - unless we remove it.

If the dog was bothered by it, or if it was in a location that got bumped into, then maybe I’d take care of it.

My dog had one on his nose but he couldn’t lick it or reach it. Another was on his back, and a few on the top of his head. He didn’t ever try to scratch or rub them.

When he had them removed, we called him “FrankenDog.” He had big black stitches against his white fur. They did heal just fine.

My dog gets these. We have them removed at the same time we get his teeth cleaned. One of them was pretty bad looking and did bleed and weep sometimes. We were glad to see that one in particular go away.
