yucky sat score?

Is an 1860 bad. i want to apply to unc wake duke rice etc. Thanks.

you can’t apply to those uni’s with it…
on the bright side, there a lot of ppl who went from waaay less scores to 2100+ even…

from 1860, with A LOT OF PREP, you can reach a 2100+ or a 2000+ at least

Wish you the best! :D

I’m going to disagree with the poster above and say that you can apply to those schools if you want; no one is going to stop you. With that said, an 1860 would be a significant weakness in an application to duke, rice, and other schools of their caliber. Unless you’re from a severely disadvantaged background and have very strong hooks, you have a very low chance of getting accepted to those schools with an 1860. Given that you’ll be applying next fall at the earliest, you have plenty of time to study anf raise your score. If you’re hookless, you should probably aim for ~50th %ile of your schools’ ranges to have a decent shot. Good luck!

^ and how is this not in accord with what I said?! -_-
she will be at a GREAT DISADVANTAGE… she might as well not apply, if she doesn’t have some extraordinary grades AND CIRCUMSTANCES… I mean, even then, why not improve that score?!

Actually, even if she has AMAZING grades… the score my make the admission’s office suspect grade inflation… so I think that without a better score… at SAT or ACT maybe if you’re international and English isn’t your 1st language, and you don’t think you can improve more on it… she is doomed to be rejected

Either way… work on that score… getting into those schools with it is near impossible… sorry, but as I formerly said…
Going from it to a 2000+ is NOT HARD AT ALL…

I went from 1900 to a 2160 so I know outa experience… IF you need any help just post here, and I will do my best to answer all your questions…
Don’t give up on your dream… BUT WORK ON ACHIEVING IT…
hope that helps

Not going to be mean or anything.

But it is possible to get into duke, etc. You just need to be a minority, or be an amazing sports player, etc.

my friend got in last year with a 3.7 weighted GPA and a 1720 SAT score…anything can happen low scores are a weakness but does not mean you will be rejected. she was no “disadvantaged” in anyway she also was accepted into upenn which is where she is at school

If she got into UPenn with a 1720 she HAD to at least have a hook.

if you have other exemplaries you might get in . . .

that score is BY ITSELF not determinative

just like a 2300 BY ITSELF is not determinative .

for context , a 2100 is the top ~3.5% of all test takers

1860 is really low for the colleges you mentioned. You need above 2000, preferably 2100+ (or the equivalent on ACT - I know two people who got 32 and 34, respectively, who were admitted to Duke).

Firstly, I’d like to say that an 1860 is NOT way too low for in-state applicants to UNC. The 25th SAT percentile for UNC students is around 1800. I assume, based on the fact that he/she is applying to three North Carolinian schools, that Roseram is in-state. Also, Wake Forest is a test-optional university. If Roseram’s GPA and extracurriculars are strong, he/she wouldn’t even need to send in the SAT score. But if Roseram did send them in, an 1860 isn’t painfully low for Wake either.

Yes, an 1860 makes admission into Duke and Rice quite unlikely. But UNC and Wake Forest are very possible destinations with an 1860 SAT score (assuming your GPA and ECs are also strong). That said, I would still recommend retaking the SAT or taking the ACT. An 1860 makes for a decent applicant to UNC and Wake, but it certainly wouldn’t make anyone a shoo-in.

@irishssons4 no she had no hook she was defferred from ED. however she was a good writer

Yeah don’t discount those scores. UNC you have a chance. I personally know people with lower scores that got in. Duke would be much harder as people said. And idk about Rice but I got an application fee waiver from them (not that that necessarily guarantees anything) after the first time I took it, which was slightly above 2000.

Ultimately, get your ECs and GPA up with good essays and you’ll still have a very good shot.

But just to make sure, take it again.

Thanka btw. idk what aood hook is but i am a minority and i am in the top 4%in my class…so I’m not a compleyely naive idiot qbout pursuing those schools. vlbut thanks for dat advice .
