Zip codes

What is the deal with zip codes and admissions? Are these really being evaluated by admissions officers? What makes a zip code desirable?

For data only

I’ve heard that some schools, mandated not to give racial considerations, instead, opt for spreading accepts to certain zip codes(known to be predominantly of one ethnicity). The context where I heard this is the UMich giving preference to some Detroit zip codes (predominantly African American). Basically, if you’re not a URM applying to a school that is being eyed closely about affirmative action, then it’s moot for you. I don’t know if this is true or not.

It can work the other way too. Some schools are known to look at Zip Code data as an indication as to whether or not you will be full pay or need financial aid. I don’t know if this actually plays a role at any given school in the admissions process, but when sending out marketing materials for schools, it is certainly used.
