Just out of curiosity, has anyone on this forum gotten into UVA without being in the top 10%? (schools that rank)

How about a reality TV show. The ADCOM of a selective university. Is the director like Oz, all powerful and making the decisions of who gets to go to Kansas. Maybe it’s like survivor and alliances are formed…vote for my kids from NOVA and I’ll vote for your kids from NJ. Or the housewives…I’m sick of Ms So&so getting all her kids in from MA every year. I’m blocking her kids this year. Maybe it’s like a bunch of Cardinals voting on a new Pope. It would be entertaining. Most students and parents view adcoms as more secreative than the CIA. Do they care about USNWR rankings? Are their outside financial pressures from the administration placed on them to help the university bottom line? It would be fun to see from the inside.

blueiguana- Thanks much for the encouragement and advice. Regret to say that the whole college admissions process has brought out a slightly pessimistic side in me…
So glad that now all I have to do is wait until April 1st to see where I’m a good fit…hopefully that’s at the University of Virginia!

It would be so boring to watch that it would get cancelled immediately.

The process varies from school to school. I try to explain how our process works in general terms on my blog, but things can change from year to year and what happens at UVa doesn’t necessarily happen at the next school on your list.

Hi there! Have followed you in the “Parents of HS Class of 2014” post for a while now…thanks for all your insightful words of wisdom!

Looks like your S2 is a second year at UVa? How does he like it there? We visited and my D14 is agog about the Kinesiology M.A. (Curry). Would love to know if anyone out there is in this program, supposed to be ranked #2 in USA, or has any insight as to its merit?

Thanks!

Hi vegasdre23,
Nice to ‘see’ you here. You’re correct I have a hs Jr, 2014, and a second year here at UVa (SEAS/mech’e). He’s very happy at UVa. He’s doing well academically, balancing academics, social, and university activities well, growing personally, meeting people from all walks of life (students and profs) that challenge him to be better and discover new things. You can’t ask for more then that.

Personally I don’t know anyone in the Kinesiology program, but like you I’ve heard very good things about it. I hope you can get some feedback from someone involved in the program. It sounds very exciting!
