10 Things I Love About The South

Interstate drivers are generally less aggressive

Strangers smile and greet me on the street

No one honks at me if I don’t move quick enough when the light changes

No snow ( usually lol) No snow removal

Flowers in February

Decent coffee – with chicory!

Seersucker

All your new neighbors making a visit to greet you when you first move in and bringing baked goods and offering any assistance with anything you need

People ask about your family, the weather, local sports before you ever get to “business”

Shelling and eating pecans from trees in your backyard

People still talk slower. When I’d visit family in NC, it was like shifting gears from Northeast fast cadence of speech (and walk) to a slower pace.

They serve grits.

10 things I love about the West(and when I say West, I mean California!)

  1. We know how to eat an artichoke
  2. Our family trees include “significant others”
  3. We all have strong opinions as to which restaurant serves the freshest arugula.
4.When a man gets on the bus with crotchless pants and a leather halter, we don’t even notice
  4. A really great parking space moves us to tears.
  5. That guy you saw at Starbucks who looks like George Clooney IS George Clooney
  6. When a 1/2 inch of rain is expected, the TV news breaks into programming with STORM WATCH!
  7. We don’t care what race people are, since we are busy wondering what gender they are.
9.Our governor can kick your governors a**.
  8. The only bugs we worry about are electronic

Ok…that explains why I left California…

You didn’t learn how to eat an artichoke? Glad you found someplace to take you in!

musicamusica: love it! and love CA!

I’d argue every region has its charms…

LOL, you haven’t ever been in front of my MIL. Tiny little southern lady, says “bless your heart” a lot, great cook (southern specialties), great hostess, but watch out when the light turns green. My children refuse to ride with her these days.

The SEC
cost of living
except for ATL, traffic isn’t too bad
running outside

sweet tea
barbecue pork sandwiches
Southern accents

The weather, biscuits and dogwood trees in the spring. My southern town in NC is more transplants than natives-lots of rudeness and aggressive driving.

sweet tea
eastern or western bbq?
I think my whole neighborhood is full of ECU pirates and we DON’T live in eastern carolina
and our neighborhood annual pig pickin’, unbelievable

Kat
ps we left CA for NC!

and of course low, low in-state tuition for undergrad and grad school (med, dental, business, vet)

I have never lived in south, but we surely loose a lot of business to southern states because of much higher taxes and union practices. Based on that, south is good because of
-low taxes
-less union representation

-No state income tax.
-But high property taxes.
-Reasonable home prices.
-Warm weather
-But miserable in July/August/early September.

somebody rides buses in California?

Our property taxes are so low ( compared to Dallas) that we thought it was a mistake at closing.

^^^^^I rode a bus in California. You can take the bus from the Santa Barbara airport all the way into the middle of town without having to transfer. You can’t do that in Seattle.

ooh I love sweet tea.
Do you eat wilted lettuce salad too?

No one honks at me if I don’t move quick enough when the light changes

This one caught my eye. In our town ( South Carolina) a woman was issued a ticket for giving a " hurry up" honk…
The older I get the more I hate the horn!

I have never lived in the south and have spent my entire life living in the DC metro area but my oldest S is now a freshman at Vanderbilt and I have completely fallen in love with the south! I love the feel, the people, the weather, etc -it really is a special place!

Kudos to all you southerners out there!

emeraldkity4-Salad is a wedge of iceberg lettuce with Thousand Island dressing poured on top.

I have found the drivers to be more considerate as you go north. My mother even comments on this when she visits. Southern drivers, IMO, tailgate more and are “merge-disabled.” She says she takes her life in her hands when she visits her local Walmart because the drivers will not stop for pedestrians. She is always impressed when she visits here at how considerate the drivers are of pedestrians.

batllo - yuck to those iceberg lettuce salads. I have to cross examine wait staff at restaurants in the south to be sure the salads are not all iceberg.
