^^^ UGA and Ga Tech are both realistic options. I just need to SAT score to improve myself. The reasons for the other schools were just to experiment and see… Attempting to apply never hurt anyone.

I just do not like the community colleges in my area because I use to take computer courses there over the summer before Freshmen year and they are horrible… Im assuming its just my State (Georgia) because the teachers there smoke indoors, they fail to teach the class and most of the time they pass everyone even if they didn’t even do a single HW assignment on their end.
This is the reason why I hate community colleges.
Also, those of you bashing me for “doing it to make my parents proud”, think of it this way:

Your father comes from a poverty stricken foreign country and works his way to the states and manages to become a doctor. My parents do not put any pressure on me, I put the pressure on myself.

Don’t get discourage by the hateful comments!!! you have to learn how to take what works for you and let the bad energy pass you by. We are in a pretty similar situations, I applied last year to Harvard, Princeton, Yale, U penn, Williams and Grinnell. I got really obsess with getting into Harvard, more because Im international and I finished hs when I was 16, and I spend a whole year at Harvard, and I found my best friends ever there. I had a beautiful life in Boston, I planned my whole life around Harvard and the awesome people I met. I came back to my country, but thinking that I would be back with my friends in less than 3 months, I did nothing but to think about it, day and night, everybody I know knew that I was applying, and that was they all asked, plus I’m from a developing country, and I was the first person they knew who ever applied to a college like this. Any way what I’m trying to tell you is not to get to obsess with any college, it was very hard when all the ivies rejected me and when I only had 2 waiting lists!! I cried a lot, my father cried and I never saw him crying before not even when my grand pa died, so it was a shock for my whole family. I had a 1800 SAT and pretty amazing EC and hs grades , but they said, however Williams and Grinnell putted me on their waiting list, and now for this year I want to give it a last shot, so I have to take the SAT again I need a 2000 as you, and I’ve been trying to improve and sometimes I do some others I don’t, but I’m positive that I will get in this time. I just want you to believe in your self I never stopped doing that and even though I didn’t get it, I’m so glad that I try and that I did everything I could, and so will you no matter what happen in the future!! I really hope that you can improve your scores as well as me!!! and be happy don’t forget about that!!

Perfectly reasonable. However, since some of your schools are OOS, I should point out that NY has a very nice chain of community colleges. The SUNY and CUNY schools here are pretty nice and are generous to OOS students (provided you can obtain a few scholarships).

Some of the SUNY schools like Geneseo are pretty competitive and very good schools.

You’re right. With a 2000 SAT score, UofG and Georgia Tech would be very good schools to apply to.

erm… why not take the ACTs? They are way easier than the SATs.

Lol the Ivies are so heavily overrated it’s not even funny. First of all, the Ivies aren’t all too great at engineering (Stanford, MIT, CMU, Gtech, UC Berkeley, UIUC, UMich, UT, and Caltech aren’t Ivies). Cornell is okay for engineering (10thish). Even their med-schools aren’t top rated (save UPenn, Harvard, and Yale). This is all from USNEWS.

As long as you stick out of the crowd, have an excellent GPA, etc. it really shouldn’t matter where you go. Some people try to make it seem worthwhile by saying that the Ivies have more job/internship opportunities. That’s plain bs. All places have opportunities. Of course, there are some places that only accept students who are Ivy graduates. You’ll learn to see, that in the long run, prestige of your university will never make much of a difference in life.

And if you continue to grad school, who the hell cares where you went to undergrad? If you get your master’s from Harvard and Bachelor’s from a CC, who cares about the BSc? Nobody! Not like going to Harvard will even make much of a difference in the long run (i.e. salaries), but you might wow some people by saying you’re from Harvard. But being from Harvard doesn’t make you more qualified. They aren’t teaching different material. And how are you going to compete with them? It’s way too hard to stand out from the crowd.

LOL why the hell are you worried if you have a 33 on the ACT’s? WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY? GT should be a low reach for you. Not all colleges just brush of ACTs like that, especially those in the South (esp. states like LA).

^^^ my school district counselors arent exactly the brightest people in the world. I also, had a longer period of time studying for the ACT than the SATs in the first place. I joined these forums yesterday. No, im not a ■■■■■…

Its just the way the ACTs are “advertised” here, most of my teachers and peers do not put much emphasis on them.

Yes, it was the same when I was up in NY. The ACTs are almost unheard of there. Some people just take it anyways, but they consider the SATs to be the major one.

When I’m in the South, a lot of people talk about the ACTs. If you apply in like Louisiana, and tell them you took the SATs, they might just ask which state you are from, since they are so unfamiliar with it. I’m not sure how it is in Georgia, but almost ALL schools have a requirement EITHER the SATs or ACTs. One or the other.

They can’t punish you for not giving your SAT scores, although not all schools accept score choice. Even if you didn’t take it, your ACT scores will definitely suffice. No worries. I know of people who’ve taken only one, or both.

In fact, I’ve never heard of a school that weighs SATs more than ACTs, and vice versa. I’ve never heard of any having a preference. Usually, the ACTs are easier, but fewer people take them. A 33 is a phenomenal score (for many, good enough for Ivies), but you can do better. However, some have a requirement that you must take both.

Don’t worry. If you can get your GPA up as well, Uchicago may come closer to your reach.

If you’re looking for points to improve, please look at the stickied threads like Silverturtle’s Guide first before starting any threads asking for books and suggestions on how to study.

BTW it’s not funny applying to places like those just for kicks. You, like many other people who are deluded as that one person had described you, will contribute to an even lower acceptance rate to those schools. This can drag down the school’s ranking and alter the statistics. And please, with a 1600 SAT? That’s actually pretty demeaning to the rest of us. It’s an outright mockery. The economy is also bad, so don’t just fiddle around with your parents’ money just like that with applications.

^^ Thanks Person, who is apparently the most ideal being in the entire world and has managed to solve every one of the world’s problems through your so benevolent attitude.
