Yeah…it’s bad. Without the writing, it’s 1180. I posted this in the chances forum but I think I might get a different response here.

Sent in my application already, just gotta send the supplemental form. Going to have my GC send my transcript as soon as the break is over.

1780/2400
3.3 UW
Top 25% in class
2-3 ECs
1 community service, not for more than 24 hours.
No work experience worth writing.
Honors classes throughout high school. (no APs in my school)
Good recs
Good essay.
Bilingual.
Been living in NJ for 5 1/2 years, but international student.
Turkish/Male
Not applying for financial aid.
Made the honor roll every year.
Parents didn’t attend college. All siblings did.

You are a little LATE. with the average SAT score you should have had the application sent in maybe Before Priority Deatline.

Hopefully (for your case) they didn’t have many Turkish Students apply. that could be a good hook for you. I mean some guy from Hawaii got into Notre Dame with like a MUCH lower than average SAT. so maybe being from Turkey will help.

However, Notre Dame and Penn State also have very different admissions standards. While Notre Dame can cut you some slack academically as long as you compensate in other areas, Penn. State follows a pretty strict formula between GPA and SAT scores.

It’s always worth applying, but at this point, I would probably say it’s a reach. I advise you is to get that application in as soon as possible. You might also want to apply for summer session.

I’m sending in my supplemental application as soon as the break is over. I forgot to mention, I also chose the Altoona campus while applying. I guess I wanted to use that as a safety. My SAT without Writing is 1190, not 1180. My bad. Don’t think that chances much, though.

I’m applying to a lot of schools, so I’m not really worried. I mean, one of them has to accept me, right? On my college list, there are: Rutgers New Brunswick, SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Albany, SUNY Stony Brook, Penn State University Park, Penn State Altoona, University of Vermont, NYU, and Johns Hopkins University. I think I have a good list with enough safeties, enough matches, and enough reaches. Out of all these schools, I think I’m good enough for at least one of them…

funkdoc: Are you aware that there is a special scholarship if your parents never went to college. I saw it in the Cornell discussion - I do not remember what it is called. You may want to spend sometime and find out. Perhaps you may get a spot based on this criteria.

PSU isnt tough to get into…my best friend from hs was accepted to PSU-University Park as an out of state student into their College of Engineering with a 3.7weighted GPA and an 1120(old) SAT. You should have absolutely no problems.

From what I’ve seen with friends accepted to Altoona, you could probably count that as a safety. A friend was accepted last year with slightly better grades, but no ECs or honors.

The difference between University Park and Altoona would probably be the location/atmosphere. I’ve said this a few times- if you are seriously looking at Altoona, it would be best to visit. It is hard to describe the campus. It’s not out in the country, but it is on the outer limits of the city.

Altoona is cheaper, quieter, and, in my opinion, a bit less prestigious locally.

Going to Altoona for me is hiiiighly unlikely. I mean, I hope it doesn’t come to that. But if it does, I’ll be sure to visit first.

My guidance counselor said the smaller Penn State campuses take literally everyone who applies. I told him that made no sense, but he said they’re just like that. Something about giving people a chance or whatever.

hey i got a 1780 in my SATs as well and i just got accepted 4 days ago! so you should have no trouble whatsoever. my stats are similar to urs, about a 3.71 gpa, 24 hrs c.s., but i have 4 APs (chem, history, bio, english). i got into eberly science for premed. i dont think ull have any problem getting in…good luck!

hey funkdoc. i’m a Turkish male also and got accepted to PSU-UP like 2 months ago. I hope you make it! we might end up going together. Turks rule!

Few nights ago, I am accepted to Penn State University Park.
Although my SAT without writing was 1200, my GPA was 4.4 out of 4.5 and my rank was 10 out of 400 graduating class. Without having much communitive services, I was strong in art - I subitted art portfolio with 20 best pieces. Well, here’s what I know about altoona vs. university park…Although I do not know what altonna is best at, university park is MUCH better. In fact, Penn State university park is the best campus above all campuses of Penn State.
