1st year move-in day

What time do the lines of cars ease, and the big rush start to die down?

Get there really early (having lived in dorms for 4 years, I was always moved in immediately if I got there right at the start of move in or half an hour earlier), an hour or two in is the longest lines, later in the afternoon the lines are shorter but the helpers are more tired. Around lunch is when the helpers switch shifts (I was a greeter/helper for 2 or 3 years) so there is a bit of staff shortage then which negates the slightly shorter lines. I believe searching on this forum will yield similar recommendations.

It’s already started. 8 AM until 11 AM are the busiest times.

Hazel’s right. Plan around the greeters. They’re fantastic.

I hope things went smoothly for all of our newest 'Hoos moving into first year housing today. It was an absolute breeze for upperclassman on-grounds housing! Best of luck to those moving in tomorrow!! :)

D’s roomate’s parents got there at 11 and texted that it was absolutely smooth sailing to the old dorms and even getting in. We got there at 1 and had a similar experience. The greeters were a huge help and we literally had all her stuff in her room within 10 minutes.

Went to O’Hill for a late lunch and had to settle for the Crossroads. After coming out D was talked into signing up for absentee voting. While doing that she put down her wallet with her ID, debit card, $200, and license…AND LEFT IT.

We went to Harris Teeter to get some food for the fridge and there was a lot of traffic, but it was also close to rush hour. That was the only downside for the entire day. While there D realized that she had lost her wallet and was in a panic. While driving home she got a call from the ID office that someone had turned it in. We picked it up and all was well again.
That is how we are, and how we raised our children, and it is SO NICE to be around an environment where most (all?) people are like that too.

So, our first experience was an A+. Let’s hope the rest of the 4 years goes as smoothly :)

TV4 - so glad your D’s wallet/ID was returned!! I have felt the same as you, can my child be so fortunate to go to a school where people actually RETURN lost items?!? This is a regular occurrence…wallets, iPods, cellphones, keys w/iD’s. The students use their class fb page to list both lost and found items. Going beyond this, wait until your D describes taking an exam where the prof walks out of the room and no one cheats…seriously! I don’t know about your D’s hs, but this was such a refreshing change to go to school with other kids who take their education seriously. The entire atmosphere is different.
Sorry about the traffic on Emmet to Barracks Rd. you’ll get used to it. It’s always various stages of lousy.
Congratulations on an awesome first day & welcome to being a Wahoo parent!

Nice to see honor in action, isn’t it? :)

I only had one visitor say they encountered traffic yesterday. I was surprised! This is the second year that the first year move in has been a two day event and I hope it’s here to stay.

Many who commute to UVa park at U-Hall, Caruthers, or Emmet & Ivy, so at 5 PM (perhaps a little earlier on a Friday ;), many come out on to Emmet. Our “rush hour” lasts about 25 minutes, though.

Just add another story. I took my niece to UVa for a football game. We ate at Newcomb then headed toward Scott stadium when she realized that she had left her bag with her iPOD and a few UVA paraphernalia she had bought at the dining hall. Since she lost her stuff at Newcomb, I felt 100% confident that someone would turn it it. I told her not to worry and enjoy the game. After the game, we stopped by lost and found at Newcomb and she got her stuff.

This is how I remember UVA…so glad the climate remains unchanged even as the school grows, buildings appear, and apparently traffic increases! Wishing your D the best four years of her life, TV4caster. I’ve followed much of your journey over the last year and am crossing my fingers that a year from now my daughter will be a day into her time at UVA and that I will not be clutching a Kleenex!

Last year it was clear sailing on Saturday at 8:30 am. I think the traffic peaked around 10 to 11 am - which accounts for people who live 1.5 to 2 hours away.

TV – when Emmet is backed up, a decent alternative to Barracks Road is Alderman to behind JPJ. From there, one can either turn right down to Emmet, avoiding the back-up at Emmet and Ivy, or one can turn left onto Massie and wind past the law school, Darden, and Copley, and then turn right on Arlington. That brings you out right at the south/Harris Teeter end of Barracks. It can be a real time saver.

Ava- thanks. That’s almost exactly what I ended up doing. I went Alderman to Copley (behind JPJ) and came out at Emmet but couldn’t turn left, so I turned right and went one block and U-turned. I’ve been studying the map for the past hour; I hate traffic and was trying to find back ways to avoid the worst of the traffic for the big games (like Penn State).
