2007 Summer Music Programs

Oklahoma City University’s Performing Arts Academy is pleased to announce the 2007 OCU Summer Music Program. Each year, students from around the nation and the world travel to OCU for our pre-college vocal and instrumental training programs.

This year, we are making some significant changes to the summer programs:

Two sessions of the high school musical theater program and junior high musical theater program will be offered.

Graduating 07 seniors may audition for all our programs.

Special scholarship consideration is available to students selected to participate in All-State (both vocal and instrumental), Boys/Girls State, National Merit Semi-Finalists and Finalists and students recognized by the NFAA ARTS Awards in voice, theater, jazz, music and dance (Merit, Honorable Mention and all levels).

Students may attend our national regional auditions (Rochester, NY November 27th - Houston and Ft. Worth TX February 2007). Summer auditions at OCU take place on the same days as our music degree auditions (11/17-18, 2/9-10, and 3/23-24). Students who are auditioning for the music degree program and those who are not are welcome to request an audition time. Families and students who are planning to visit OCU may contact our office about arranging an audition while they are here. Audition submissions may also be mailed.

We are accepting DVD/video auditions (which are preferred) as well as CD/audio cassettes.

Two programs that might be of interest to members of this forum are:

**OCU High School Musical Theater Program -

(Session I) June 17 - July 7
(Session II) July 8 - July 28**

A three week intensive pre-college residency program that provides both classroom training and on-stage experience. In the mornings, students attend
classes in music theory, acting, dance, improv, diction, scene study, audition prep and vocal master classes by the OCU Bass School of Music faculty. Nights are for rehearsals of our fully staged musical. Shows TBA. Sessions are back-to-back and accepted students may request admission to both. A different show will be presented each session. Programs directed by Dr. David Herendeen, Director of OCU Opera/Music Theater Program.

**OCU Vocal Arts Institute

June 24 - July 7**

This residency program is designed for students who want to pursue a career in opera/classical voice or those who want to develop their legit singing technique. Daily classes cover music theory, diction, classical/opera repertoire, vocal pedagogy and private voice lessons. Students also work on opera scenes from classic works which are presented in an evening
performance. Undergraduate college students may also audition for admission to this program.

Wow…is it time for summer already? :)

The OCU program sounds fascinating. Does anyone know the show they are doing? I believe they did “Footloose” last year which is my child’s favorite (oh well!).

No, it was Bye Bye Birdie…I think Footloose was two years ago.

Hi…Yes, the show last year was Bye Bye Birdie…a wonderful production!

This year, we will be presenting not one but two shows for our two high school musical theater programs. And not let’s forget the two shows both of the junior high musical theater programs will be doing!

Incidentally, for those who emailed me , the dates for the junior high musical theater program (two week sessions) are:

June 17th - June 30th
July 7 -July 21

Auditions are not required for the junior high programs.

We have almost finalized the two shows we will be presenting for our high school program. We are currently awaiting rights approval, so I won’t mention the titles. One show we are very possibly presenting is currently on Broadway.

In general, are most summer programs only for students still in high school or can just-graduated seniors also do them?

When will you be able to post the names of the musicals that OCU will stage in the precollege program?

Thank-you so much for this information.

Les Miserables and Pajama Game!!!

My daughter will be sending in an audition DVD. She is really excited.

Thanks again.

As you can see by name, my child is very excited about the show news!

My compliments on an excellent websiste. It gave me all the information I needed and quite easy to use. The pictures were quite a plus!

My child attended another music camp back east this past summer (I won’t mention the name but it has been mentioned here quite frequently) and we were very dissapointed with the quality of training. It seemed like all the kids did were be in rehearsals. The “classes” (as they called it) were more like learn while you’re in rehearsal.

I would love to hear any opinions from those who have atteneded the OCU program. We’re looking for a real training program and not just a summer camp where they do a show. It sounds like OCU is very training oriented. Thanks.

mizmom - I just bumped up a summer program discussion thread for you.

There is quite a bit of discussion on that thread in July and early August 2005 about the summer my son went to the OCU program. It was a great experience, and they did have real training during the day, with rehearsal at night.

PS to mizmom - On the OCU summer program web site referred to above, when you click into summer music programs and then into high school musical theatre programs, some of the pictures scrolling on that page are of Footloose (from summer 2005) and show some of the CC kids who were in that show, front and center (see the discussion I mentioned above about 2005 for more).

Does anyone know which programs accept graduating seniors? For instance, I know OCU does but how about CCM, Interlochen, UMich, or CAP-21?

I believe that NYU does. But I could be wrong.

Interlochen does

Hello, I have been reading a lot, but you are correct I haven’t posted yet. My daughter is a junior and this has been a great source of information as we look for MT summer programs. She has an audition for OCU on Monday and we are both excited.

Anyone know if there will be a Broadway theatre project this summer? If so, how does one get information about upcoming auditions?

thanks

I hope they will have BTP again this summer. My D attended last summer and loved it. She auditioned by videotape, but they have had auditions in several cities around the country–at OCU, in NYC, Chicago, Southern California, Texas, NC, Michigan, and Florida I think. Auditions have been in late January to late February. Their website has not been updated for 2007 yet, but you could email them and they will probably get back to you with more information if they have any yet.

What exactly is the Broadway Theatre Project?

For Interlochen, do you have to have already participated or no?

BTP - Broadway Theatre Project - see www.broadwaytheatreproject.com.

ilbamom - hope you all are doing great! Auditions were in Jan. - Feb. last year. Last year, TX auditions were at Sam Houston State Univ. and NC auditions were at NCSA in Winston-Salem. There were so many Dallas area people on the OCU campus at the audition last year, that I wouldn’t be surprised if they have one in the Dallas area this year.

Typecastme - This is a great summer program for students ages 16 and up in HS and college held in Tampa at USF campus for 3 weeks in July. There has been much discussion about it on previous summer program threads, and they have a good web site. The web site has not been updated yet for 2007.
