2009 PSAT Scores and Discussion

1 Point per missed question on practice, 5 points per missed question on the real deal?

That’s not how scoring the test works. I don’t feel like explaining. It’s in any practice book.

I took the Sat two days ago and it was a joke compared to the psat. I expect to get 2300+ becuase I dont think I missed a question on math, writing, or vocab. However, I thought the psat was hard, but I’ll find out how I did tomorrow.

^ I went down 12 points from my sophomore year and i got a score sophomore year that would have been enough for MA NMSF…so yeah im a little disappointed but my score is still at my state’s exact cutoff from last year and there doesn’t seem to be any indication that FL’s cutoff will go up; my GC said she thought FL’s cutoff would be 210 this year but THAT IS IN NO WAY ANY INDICATION OF REALITY SINCE I DONT THINK GC’S REALLY KNOW, i think she was just guessing perhaps hopefully, so that our school may once more produce a NMSF. so dont anyone go spreading any rumors about FL’s cutoff please.

On that note, does anyone else also find it rather strange that 25% of juniors did worse than last year? Or I am misinterpreting the stats on this website incorrectly again lol?

@alihaq: My High School has a relationship with a Kaplan Branch where they subsidize an SAT course for Juniors and a practice test for Sophomores. I took the Sophomore practice test, and received an official-looking Kaplan score report.
@Fresh101: I know it doesn’t work like that for the whole test. What I’m saying is that for each question that I personally got wrong, I lost X points. I don’t intend to extrapolate that to a score of 0 with 16 questions wrong.

TQSMNTASP:

I am really sorry for you that your score went down so much, but from what I understand from this thread and the scores of other students at my school, it seems that juniors did relatively poor on the psat. I do not think that the cutoffs for most states will go down, but I am almost certain that the cutoffs are not going to go up (maybe a point in some states). In that case, you should probably be fine. As for 25% of juniors doing worse, that is probably a little high, but clearly overall this was a down year.

@nmsfsat…thanks but its not the end of the world if i dont end up getting it…but i do agree with you…i know of one large public school in my area that has produced a handful of NMSF’s in the past only having one potentially qualified score this year (214)…also i have the consolation that when my bro took the PSAT junior year, he got 2 pts below the last year’s FL cutoff, but it ended up going down 3 pts that year so he got it. And the NMSF would not only be good for me, but also for my small private school that’s really hurting for enrollment right now…we just had an open house over the weekend…and no one showed up lol. I counted that last year exactly half of states’ cutoffs went down or stayed the same from the previous year. I think/hope thatll change, so I myself really feel for those who have 1-3 points below their state’s cutoff from last year.

personally, i got 16 points higher on my psat than last year. though im really annoyed cause i haven’t seen the actual problems yet, and i want to see what i did wrong. sadly i am 99% sure i don’t make cutoff unless it lowers to below 200 LOL. jersey was at 221 last year. hope i did better on dec SAT

Well, whatever happens, I’ll have done better than last year: I have never taken the PSAT. :)

I’m still waiting for mine. I got a 159 last year, but that’s before I learned a bunch of the math that I needed. I’m betting I’ll get a higher score this year.

^ lol to silverturtle…the most knowledgeable person on this thread about the PSAT has never taken it before…please tell you’re not a freshman haha

He’s a junior.

Silverturtle, you are a guy right?

Grrr… That annoying “explanation of” question dragged me down from a perfect >( .

Anyway, I got 238 (80 M, 80 R, 78 W). I guess it’s all right for taking it cold on 5 hours of sleep, but still…

In any case, congratulations to Zerafenix for getting a perfect, and hopefully Silverturtle’s appeal succeeds…

“Silverturtle, you are a guy right?”

Yep.

I can email the petition document to anyone who wants to give it a read. Just message me with your email. I’m open to suggestions.

Sophomore year scores: 63 CR, 62 M, 53 W (absolutely pathetic) Total score of 178

after a bit of studying for the SATs and a couple of practice tests later

Junior year scores: 70 CR, 79 M, 70 W (yesssssssss) Total score of 219

41 frickin point improvement!!!

if it happened for me then it can happen for you!

Congratulations to everyone who is proud of their scores. Condolences to those who aren’t.

That was rather… unexpected. Silverturtle, please don’t take offense at this but I never thought you’d be a dude. I’d always envisioned you as a girl for some reason. Guess I’ll have to re-adjust that mental image then… D:

In any case, I’m still waiting for my scores. I saw the reports all stacked on a desk in the counseling office today, but when I asked for mine the secretary said no and told me they’d be mailed out separately to everyone… meaning that I have to wait a few more days. Grrrr.

I improved by about 20 points! Haha congrats to everyone who got the scored they wanted (:

Does anyone know when the cutoff scores for National Merit will be out?? I’m one point off from last year’s so I’m really hoping it’ll go down!

This may be a stupid question, but why the discrepancy in curves between Form W and Form S? I highly doubt, for example, that someone who got two wrong on the Saturday test (barely a 70 according to the curve) would have gotten three wrong and omitted another on the Wednesday test.

Three wrong and one omitted on the Wednesday test would garner a score of 68, not a 70.

i got a 212 form w in ohio. 2 years ago cutoff was 213. last year it was 211 so im right on the border. ahhhh. math gridin divisible by 5 and 31 i know i put 310 as answer. yet report says i put 311???
