**2011 APUSH Official Post-Test**

Multiple choice: missed about 10

DBQ: Super easy. Could go on forever about Nixon. 4 pages

FRQ: Part B- Political parties. 3 pages. Fairly easy

FRQ: Part C- Immigration. Incredibly easy.

@apush93 I took the same stance on question number 3 as you (because the prompt specifically mentioned unity and not sectionalism, that was my thinking at least) but I backed it up with different information. Hope we’re ok :)

I wrote about the public unrest(mostly college students) and as a result Vietnamization took place. I also talked about waterate my lai the pentagon papers ho chi Minh trail, bombing of Cambodia and laos, and some others.and the viet cong. Does
This seem strong to u guys?
I also talked about the tet offensive. I analyzed them all I used all but one doc, thesis was okay/bad. I think essay was strong. Do u think that essay could be 7/8?
Someone please answer I’ll answer ur questions

@Nervousjim What was your thesis? The thesis is the most important part. Also did you elaborate on the list of events you listed and incorporate it into you thesis?

how do you guys write over 4 pages?.. i wrote 1 and a half and thought i did alright, aiming for a 5-6. and looking at the mean score of like a 3 on the dbq and the readers saying people did well, i feel like i did way worse.

People seem to be forgetting one thing about the dbq, in answering the question you have to address both parts. A lot of people are on this saying whether or not your essay is good based upon what topic relevant to the question you introduced. You could have talked about every major topic and what it was about to the best of your ability, but if i didnt critique Nixon’s responses to these problems, you only answered half the question. That being said it doesnt matter how many varied topics you introduce (although a wide range is important) it matters that you described Nixon’s responses to these problems

what was the time period for the dbq again?

@apush93 idk my thesis but I was very elaborate and analyzed those topics well. My thesis was incredibly broad.

About the DBQ:

What’s more important: Writing about everything you know or using the documents and outside knowledge to form an original, sophisticated thesis?

For example, my thesis basically said that Nixon’s obsession with cold war mentality (must defeat soviets) led to international problems, that led to domestic problems which he addressed using force (whether direct or indirect.)

My examples:

Vietnam- cold war mentality- containment- using military force- protests/unrest- kent shooting

Middle East- cold war mentality- defeat of Soviet backed armies- used indirect military force (that of Israel)- Caused oil embargo- economic problems- used authoritative force to fix oil embargo (“forcing” gas stations to close on weekends for example.)

I had plenty of relevant outside info since Cold War in the middle east was my term paper topic.

As you see I didn’t talk about Watergate or Civil Rights movement since they did not apply to my thesis. Watergate was only 2 documents and you don’t ahve to use all the documents. My friends laughed at me when I didn’t use watergate. It’s not a must have right? Just an easy target.

So will I be penalized? What’s more important- writing everything I know about the years 1968-1973, or using the documents/info I already know to support/prove an original thought?

I did talk about responses I had a whole parapgraph Over it. I’m just worried that if my thesis is crap what will
My score be even if I killed the rest of the essay

@numero1- if u didnt address domestic issues than yes, you will be penalized cause you didnt answer the whole question

my thesis was something along the lines that the nixon administrations’ actions show their attempts for peace internationally. oh that seems horrible now.

Unfortunately you are rewarded for having a thesis and using the Docs to prove it. It is called a document based question. :(

I don’t get how everyone here is saying they got a 5 when I’m pretty sure most of you didn’t.

The MC for me was kinda medium-easy. I really hated the fact that most of the questions were based upon society + culture and didn’t really revolve around important things. I liked how the Collegeboard played a few tricks on us by asking us who Ida. B Wells was and I’m pretty sure tons of people confused her with Ida M. Tarbell. Also, the question about the objectives of the Republican Party in 1860 and one of the choices was a protective tariff and then the other question that insinuated they reduced the tariff. Also, lol calling the Intolerable Acts the Coercive Acts. I bet all those tricks got a couple thousand people.

For the DBQ, I thought it was ok, I wrote about 7 pages for it and talked about how Nixon was horrible in domestic policy and a genius at foreign policy.

FRQ’s wrote about political parties, it was about 5 pages and included tons of factual information.

2nd FRQ I wrote about civil rights because I had more info on it even though I had originally planned to write on immigration.

What’s the max score u can get if ur thesis is crap. I mean I didn’t go off topic, but it’s really broad, and I explain in essay most

Exactly you need to analyze the wide range and evaluate nixon on each one or else your not well off in terms of score.

@nervousjim I think detente was an important aspect of nixon’s response to the international challenges. Decreased tensions between USSR, USA, and China which were getting hammered by the high cost of weaponry and were all fearful of nuclear war. Also vietnamization could have been looked at as a positive because it quickly withdrew troops from vietnam like Nixon promised. I didn’t put any of this in my essay lol. But i wish did

for a question like this having a solid thesis isnt necessarily as important as it may be in other types of essay question (e.g. “to what extent questions”). Whether or not you have a good thesis is decided by how well you support it in your body paragraphs

I did talk about relations between us and comminst china/Russia, talked about how this brought hanoi tO peace table. Didn’t specifically say detente, but is that good?

Yes I discussed both international and domestic issues- I simply said in my thesis that international problems CAUSED domestic problems… and I think I addressed teh whole question: talk about international and domestic issues and Nixon’s response which I did.

The real question is: WAS HAVING WATERGATE ULTRA-IMPORTANT IN THE DBQ BECAUSE MY FRIENDS LAUGHED AT ME FOR NOT INCLUDING IT AND I FEEL REALLY BAD NOW.
