2011 Going off their waitlist

The college admission committees have become more adept at predicting the number of admitted students who will actually enroll. With more students applying, the ACs can admit more students while still keeping the percentages low, lower even than in previous years. You will find 950-plus prospective students admitted for an entering class of 380. There will be an additional 1,000 on the waiting list. As you can see, the odds are against students on the waitlist. In the past ACs have been burned in both ways: too few admitted and too many. They have learned from their mistakes. From what I’ve read the ACs are quite confident that they’ve got it right this year. It would appear that the idea that more students would be admitted from the waitlists has already been proven to be speculative and false.

well that sucks.

If the admissions professionals have it so well defined that they only need to admit a few, or say, 26, from their waitlist, why do they put 1000 students on the list?

Cruel. Really.

I should have said that 1,000 will be offered a place on the waitlist. About 1/3 will accept, 1/3 will decline, and 1/3 won’t reply. So the actual waitlist is much smaller. Evidently, however, it is not rank-ordered, and a student chosen from the list will have to stand out in some way, whether by impressing the AC with eagerness or new information or by possessing some qualification they’re looking for.

My daughter’s friend, who was on the waitlist, heard from Middlebury and accepted their offer.

Well, the fact that schools like Yale, Duke, Middlebury, and Williams are already using their waitlists certainly says something about the lower yield rumors.

hoping to see a bit of a domino effect since the top schools went to their waitlist this week.

Ginnylee, are you sure about Haverford? I’ve heard from quite a few people that next year’s class is over-enrolled.

2 of son’s friends received letters yesterday saying Haverford’s class was filled.

Technically no one has reported actually being OFFERED at Brown yet…people have reported reach outs from Brown to CGs to inquire as to students’ intentions IF offered.

I just spoke with UPenn Admissions. Was told they are definitely going to waitlist and have started contacting students via email and portal. Was reminded that it is a rolling process and some students will not hear until June. Was also told that all students will eventually be contacted with final admission decision.

@ProudMomofS
It’s just confirmation that they are definitely going to the wait list and have chosen some students. This is a nebulous issue, for certain. I hear ya!

Adding UPenn as per above. Thanks 3plus1 !

vanderbuilt

Quick Fact: We have 81 colleges “Going to the Wait List” as of May 11, 2011. That is up from 59 colleges on May 11, 2010. It is also up from the final total of schools who went to the wait list in 2010, which was 70 colleges. Although that does not necessarily imply that more students are getting in off the wait list, it could imply an increased prevalence in wait list use.

I guess that HYPS have to go to their waitlists before Brown, Penn, Dartmouth, and Cornell can predict closely what number they will lose. And the same with some highly competitive LACs. Though they must know pretty well what summer melt will be, right?

Has anyone heard from Washington and Lee or Hamilton College?

i have refrained from using cc until now but the waitlisting process is so darned nerve racking and mysterious. I think its rude of colleges to keep us in the dark for so long. My friend got deferred and then waitlisted at williams… that’s just uncalled for

so I’m waiting to hear back from the stanford princeton and williams waitlists… haven’t gotten so much as a peep from any of them

so any news anybody has on those would be great. I think i saw somewhere else on the site that stanford is announcing information about the waitlist by the end of the week can anyone verify that?
