Actually, UCSF Tetrad has already accepted 56 students (77 interviewed). There MAY be a couple of spots still up in the air because of off-weekend interviewees that have not yet visited, but for the most part, the admissions decisions have all been made.

But like DeisGrad mentioned, you hear back based on who’s supposed to contact you’s own pace. It’s possible some applicants in the cohort of 56 acceptances just haven’t been told yet. Somewhat unlikely, but if that happens to be the case, it won’t stay that way for long.

So I need to respond to a program I’ve been accepted to by march 25, but I am still waiting to hear from UCSF dev bio program. How long should I wait before trying to contact UCSF to request a status update? I interviewed on feb 11 (and it was the only interview date for that program), so I dont think it’s too likely they’re still accepting people, but I’d be kicking myself if I commit now, and find out later that I was accepted late.

I’d just call them. They’ll either refuse to tell you (at which point you’re no worse off than you are now) or they’ll tell you and you can stop worrying about it. Either way you won’t do any harm.

You might also mention that you need to know before March 25th because of another offer.

IMSAgeek, calling is probably the best method of contacting them, yes. I’m wondering whether to call next week, or wait longer though? It’s been a little over 3 weeks since the interview, so I suppose they could still be deciding. However all the programs I did get into, I heard from within 2 weeks of the interview, and those were larger groups with multiple interview dates.
This interview had maybe 20 people… Seems like that means the turnaround should be faster, but then maybe they’re just taking their sweet time regarding decisions.

Perhaps an email monday, asking for when a decision might be ready, and a call around march 15th, if i dont have an answer by then?

Oh, I was suggesting you call them tomorrow. I don’t really see any reason to send an e-mail first. I’m sure they’re quite used to people calling and asking their status, so unless they told you specifically not to (some schools do), I would just call them tomorrow.

Thanks, BU’s faculty member seemed nicer than Tufts, they were extremely friendly and seems to be extremely devoted to make you sure you succeed in the program that was my impression at least. Also BU is ranked better than Tufts and BU has twice the amount of NIH funding compare to Tufts according to US NEWS.

Tufts has more classes and more rotations and i had applied to the MERGE ID track which has some more clinical rotations and classes leaving you with less time for your thesis unless you willing to take longer to graduate.

These are some few reasons why i chosed BU over Tufts, to tell you the faculty members at BU really wanted me in their program and already helping me finding a place to live etc + BU stipend is more than Tufts

If you have been offered a funding package by the school in question that accepted you then they cannot require you to accept or decline before April 15. They may request that you notify them of your decision sooner, but cannot require it. Most graduate programs have made this graduate council resilution so that students are not put in the exact situation you are describing. Google “graduate council April 15” to read more about this.

thanks, compbio–that’s good to know. It’s true I’ve been a little concerned about them revoking the acceptance, or something, lol. Just being paranoid about things going wrong.

There still is the issue that i am actually quite excited about that program, and want to do a summer rotation, which I would have to set up very soon, if that is to happen.

My impression when I interviewed at Tufts was that it was smaller than I liked. Of the twenty some faculty in the immunology field, I found only one or two that was interesting to me.

Tufts is definitely a great school by reputation undegrad/med/vet, but I also noticed there weren’t too many prolific faculty there (eg large/multiple grants, high imp factor pubs)

Who do you call or email to find out decisions after interviews? The secretary/admisnistrator or one of the PIs? My interview was 2 months ago and I never heard anything back from UChicago, the micro dept. It was my first choice but it doesn’t look so good now. I’d like to know so I can move on and make my decisions for the remaining schools so that people on the waiting lists might get a chance once I reject.
