I received an acceptance packet from Rockefeller today (my interest is in neurobiology and mathematical biology). The program looks great!

Anybody willing to switch UCSD BMS interview dates with me? (your Feb. date for my March) Please?

Does anyone know if NYU’s Neural Science program is finished sending out invites?

I just got an invite to interview at UNC Chapel Hill for BBSP via email. I thought they were done sending those out, but apparently not. Interviews are Feb. 17-19 and March 3-5.

Just got an interview for UCLA MCIP program. It doesn’t seem like anybody on here applied to that program, but I still wanted to share!!!

Still holding out for UCSD Neuro and UCSD BMS. It looks like UCSD Neuro might be the same weekend as UCLA MCIP (Feb 25), but I probably won’t get into UCSD Neuro anyways…

got an invite from OHSU Molecular & Cellular Biosciences. I was wondering anyone’s thoughts on OHSU in general or this program specifically. I asked around my lab and a lot of people have said “I’ve never heard of it.” A md/phd friend of mine said they’re highly ranked in primary care, but that doesn’t apply to me.

Also, thoughts on turning down interviews in general? there’s just not enough weekends, but i don’t want to be left out in the cold with nothing b/c i bombed the ones i did take. these are important times and bossman is understanding, but i’m missing a crazy amount of work (like 3/4 for the next 6 weeks).

on an alternate note, invite for NIH-John Hopkins Graduate Partnership Program! Did anyone else apply?

anyone apply for NIH-Oxford Cambridge GPP either? I haven’t heard anything from that one.

anyone else hear anything from ucsd bms?? i still haven’t heard and am starting to lose hope.

Has anyone gotten an official rejection from UCSD BMS?

I was at OHSU for a few days this summer meeting faculty and at a Integrative Cancer Biology Conference. Although this may not be your department, I was VERY impressed with their research there. I really liked it!

@biology123 I’m interviewing for PCMB at OHSU too. If you have any questions about OHSU you can PM, as I work as an RA here. I was a graduate student at University of Pittsburgh and would recommend OHSU over Pitt. OHSU is more relaxed, that may come from the fact that Portland is a laid back city, and everyone is very friendly. One thing I will note is that Portland and OHSU are not diverse (that’s something that I look for in a city and graduate program). If you’re concerned with rankings, I don’t know how OHSU would fair with your other prospects.

I was going to apply to OHSU back when I was with my last boyfriend; he was applying to med school and we were trying to stick together. I liked what I read about the program, but after the break-up, I pared down my list to 10 and dropped it. I just wasn’t interested in living in Oregon. It’s worth mentioning that a lot of faculty from OHSU come to our institute to give talks, and the research seems really excellent there.

As for turning down interviews, I’ve thought about it. It’s not that there are only so many weekends. Two of my interviews conflict with a third one that I had already committed to, and with each other, and I’ve had to schedule them for other days. It hasn’t been an issue. Two programs I’ve already decided I’m willing to decline if I hear back from enough other programs. I’m trying to cut down on the amount of work I’m going to miss, as well as the amount of bird-sitting I have to ask people to do.

Are other people rescheduling, too? Or is it just me?

Joehanus: i haven’t heard anything from neural sciences, but they just started sorting out applications, so don’t worry yet.

hey everyone, i thought i’d share my stats, please tell me what you think:
GPA:3.57 overall, 3.88 major;
2 years of neuro experience, including computational modeling with a great name
2 articles as a 2nd author
one more en route
1 poster presentation at a major conf
fantastic letters
GRE 1320, Writing 5.0

applied to NYU neural
princeton psychology
BU neuro

From UCSD: “I have placed your name on the Feb waiting list. At this point it is unlikely that a spot would open up but… you never know.”

Now I really don’t know what to do!! UGH.

Flutopian, you never know! My senior year roommate didn’t get into Harvard Immuno, her first choice, but one of the faculty members wanted her so much, he made them create a waitlist just so she could be on it. She ended up getting in, and she went. So you DO never know.

Although it’s still pretty frustrating when you don’t know something for sure. Sometimes rejection is better than a waitlist in that respect.

Flutopian–I second phirah-- same thing happened for a friend who ended up getting into princeton despite being told that being waitlisted pretty much implies rejection. don’t give up hope yet.

Flutopian, Not to beat around a bush, but have you tried asking the faculty member who contacted you about an alternative date? Oftentimes they know more about your file than the person doing the scheduling who just does as told, so maybe maybe if they are super interested they can allow an exception to be made. Who knows, but definitely worth the try I would think. I was told that they don’t like to do it, but in extreme circumstances will consider making alternative arrangements. Luckily, I was able to reschedule one of my schools who were VERY accommodating and had a lot of dates and that solved all scheduling problems for me. Such a ridiculous process…

For anybody still waiting on Scripps, I emailed admissions today. I got the generic response…applications are under review and all notifications will be sent out by April 15. So, reading between the lines means they are done, boo. As far as waitlists, I know people have gotten in, but it is unlikely. I know someone who got the “waitlisted for interview” thing at UCSD last year, but then got rejected not too long after.

I am waiting to hear from
Harvard Biostatistics
Boston University Bioinformatics
Boston College (Computational) Biology.
Wondering if anyone applied to or heard from these programs.
