The faculty member I contacted just got back to me and said she pleaded my case to the chair of admissions and was told that he has confirmed that the February dates are just too full and that phone interviews and alternative dates will not give a clear picture of the program. Basically she said there’s nothing they can do.

So FYI anyone who has conflicting dates with UCSD BMS on their March interview date: 1) they won’t reschedule and 2) it’s a de facto rejection.

That’s one thing I don’t understand about these interviews. All the schools schedule them for essentially the same weekends, yet when you are perfectly willing to come for one day to conduct an actual interview, they say no because it doesn’t give an “accurate” portrayal of their program. In other words, they can’t pamper you into joining the program. It’s entirely frustrating, especially if you’re forced to make a decision between two schools when you haven’t even visited the programs.

Sure, you can look at what research you like more, but I have found in many cases that school websites are not updated, or the faculty member’s description does not match what they publish.

I don’t think so, UBuffalo’s deadline isn’t even until Feb. 1 so IMO they are just kinda doing the rolling invite thing. I turned my app in Dec.

@ender776 My sentiments exactly. I am beyond exasperated. I wish I knew someone attending the Feb session that I could bribe into switching with me, but that’s just as much a long shot. :(

Regarding Vanderbilt IGP, they have 9-10 interview weekends stretching into March and, like you said, their deadline was only a few days ago. They do have rolling admissions, however, and they listed a December 1st ‘priority deadline’ on their website. I submitted my application soon after that and went to their first interview weekend.

However, I would not give up hope at all if you have not heard yet and/or get invited for a later weekend. They wouldn’t spend the hundreds of dollars to have you visit unless they had a genuine interest in accepting you.

If you do get an interview, I highly recommend attending; I was very impressed by the interview weekend.

I saw the post on Gradcafe on IGERT fellowship too and called BU admissions office. They gave me the standard we will let you know in March reply. I think BU also has an open house for accepted students in mid-Feb. That is what makes me nervous.

I agree with you but Boston College started late so they might take a little more time.

You definitely pretty much nailed why I’m so annoyed about Flutopian’s de facto rejection! Also, I’m also interviewing for Johns Hopkins CMDB! I won’t be there for their weekend, though, because I have another interview. They’re having me interview on the 27th (next week) instead. I’m totally psyched–I didn’t think they would want to talk to my with my GPA.

It’s 3.35. But I double-majored in biology and women’s studies, and while most of my WS grades are As and A-s, most of my science grades are Bs and B-s, with some C grades thrown in.

I also have to hope that admissions committees don’t just look at my transcript and assume that I’m bad at biology and that WS is super easy. Definitely not the case.

It was by post (Fedex, specifically). Actually, they sent it to the permanent address I gave, which is my parents’ house in a different city, rather than my current address, so I found out by phone (from parents, not Rockefeller) and won’t see the details until my dad mails the packet to me…
