2011 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

Has anyone heard from Berkeley Infectious Disease (in SPH)?? I saw one interview invite on GradCafe and am curious if anyone else has heard or knows if the invites were sent out by mass email (anyone invited should have already received one) or if profs are sending them out individually (still some hope)… Any ideas? Getting nervous. Thanks!

WashU sent me the hotel/getting there from the airport information in the mail along with a metro ticket to use. Also, there will probably be a graduate student there to pick you up and escort you to the hotel. The hotel (Parkway) is located right beside all the main buildings that you will be interviewing in. The interviews were fun, mine were a bit intense, but I interviewed with people that are familiar with my field of interest, so I was expecting a pretty research heavy discussion. What program are you interviewing for? I was Molecular Cell Bio, and they sent me the schedule of interviews a day or two before I left to fly out.

And accepted to Pitt IBGP!

So far one acceptance to UMD Med in Baltimore with 27K/yr stipend! Also, just got back from Brown MCB interview weekend. Awesome program and people, and they really know how to pamper their interviewees. Hopefully my future interviews are all that great.

Just got an interview invite to Human Genetics at Hopkins as well! Still waiting on Mt. Sinai though (and Columbia, though I think they might be done with sending out invites).

Yay! Spoke to soon. Got the Mt. Sinai invite!

@kp12746 I agree… Brown was great! the students and faculty are soooo relaxed over there

Accepted to UCI CMB, interviewed on Friday :)

Congrats Imm2010. I can’t believe they already told you. I interviewed this weekend, too (but with the INP program). They told us that we won’t know until next week. :frowning:

Congrats!

@OzTravels and everything else
thanks for the information. i sent an email to them and they replied back with more details. there will indeed be a grad student there to pick me up. phew.

i applied to biochemistry at washu

Acceptance to Brown MCB! :)

@UCNeuro2011

Don’t sweat it! Our program director told us they would start reviewing on Monday and roll the admissions. It sounds like the INP program is doing it differently.

@bombardior

you’re probably staying at the Parkway Hotel, that’s where most interviewing students stay.

Hey! I am a computer science graduate and have been working in bioinformatics for the past couple of years. I am an international student, but did my masters in the US. Here’s my applications:

Applied: UCSD Bioinformatics, UCSC Bioinformatics (BME), UMICH bioinformatics, Stanford biosciences, CMU-UPITT joint program, UC Denver Computational bioscience
Interview: UC Denver Computational Bioscience
Rejects: Stanford biosciences

I saw on this forum that a couple of people have interview invitations from CMU-UPITT. Do you have any idea if the time frame is different for international students? If I have not received an invite from the program yet, does that mean that I am rejected?

Also, has anyone applied to the other bioinformatics programs? If so, any results/replies?

Does anyone have an idea of the acceptance rate at UC Denver?

I am very worried …

anyone interviewing for vandy’s IGP march3-5? anyone already interview? how’d it go…?

I interviewed last weekend for uMich bioinformatics. I know they have another interview weekend in two weeks. If you have not heard from them maybe you are on a waitlist of sorts, because they have also sent out some rejections.

Did anyone bring data or any kind of sheet summarizing important figures with them to interviews? Does anyone know if this would be frowned upon as a “crutch”?

No, it would not be considered a crutch. The faculty have full powerpoints to explain their work. My PI said it’s pretty common for a recruit to come to an interview with a picture or two. Last week at interviews I found myself drawing the same damn picture over and over so this week I’m just going to print out a schematic to take with me. I wouldn’t go in with a packet of info though…you just need to be able to discuss the overall goal of your work and its implications. I was never asked about the specifics of my data - there just isn’t enough time to go into that much detail.

Got an e-mail about being waitlisted for UCSD BMS.

Anyone else? Anyone get an actual denial e-mail?

@benkraj are you domestic or international? i haven’t gotten anything…

Is it common to send brief thank you emails to interviewers? I sent a two line “thank you for you time…enjoyed our talk” note to each. Should I not have done this? Should I have been more elaborate in my thank you note???

Mendel,

I did the same thing. I think it’s fine…they probably prefer it!
