2011 Official Biosciences Interviews and Results

Also, anyone know how it works for UCSD biological sciences? As in, what percentage of interviewees are accepted?
Thanks!

I got accepted into WashU Neurosciences program this week, so excited! I interviewed there a few weeks ago.

accepted into brown and duke so far

You guys, I am so happy for you all!

I interviewed at NYU (Sackler) this Friday past, and it was all so surreal! The PI’s just, basically, talked at me! Even the match-ups with the faculty were so totally random! I only got two of the people I wished to interview with and, I don’t know what to think anymore. I don’t have much research experience, though my academic grounding is strong. I am still waiting to hear back from Tufts, Tulane and Pitt, and I feel like I am losing my mind! Surely, I cannot not have no prospects?!

Please, anyone, say something! Anything!

A.

You interviewed just this last Friday? Then there’s no way they would have contacted you by now! Even if they interviewed you the Friday before that, you probably won’t have heard back yet. And at the interviews, they have a lot of students interviewing, so sometimes it can be difficult to get with the people who you want to interview with. At one of the schools I interviewed at, I only got about half faculty that I requested, and the others seemed kind of random, and I got in! So keep in mind that the other interviewees probably didn’t get everybody that they wanted either :slight_smile: Also, sometimes it can be good to interview with some people that you might not have requested initially–one of my favorite interviews was with somebody that I never thought I’d want to work with! So you never know…

That’s just me saying something hehe

Thank you, Sconecakes! Even your username is comforting! Haha!

It’s just that the interviews did not go as envisioned. As I said, they basically talked at me and kinda dismissed me at the end. So unexpected! That, and the fact that everyone else seemed so much more accomplished than I!

Congratulations on getting in, however! I am most pleased for you!

A.

Hello everyone, it’s a bit late, but I’ll get in on this.

I applied to:

University of Toronto CSB M.Sc. program and that application is under review.
Medical College of Wisconsin IDP in Biomedical Sciences and got an interview!

Stats:
CGPA: 3.45
Major GPA: 3.5
GRE: 950 (very low)
All strong LORs.

Research experience: Worked 2 years in a behavioral neuroscience lab before moving onto developmental biology. Currently am working with another professor on an undergraduate honors thesis which will eventually become a publication (probably once I’m in graduate school). Or I’ll publish my thesis in an undergraduate journal. Planning on presenting at a regional and national conference as well as submitting an abstract to an annual national conference. So I have a total of 3 years+1 summer of research experience.

Anyone went to UConn interview, how was it, i had a good time but dont know what to think of the schools, the labs looked kinda old etc?

I am ready for BU interview for tomorrow, they put us for two nights in a very nice hotel with an amazing french restaurant, i hope the interview is as good as the hotel and food :slight_smile:

Anyone else going to BU interview tomorrow

@Elocin

I got an interview at the Medical College of Wisconsin, too! Did you go to the first weekend or are you going next week? I wanted to be at the first weekend, but I was in Madison then, so I had to wait for an offer for the second weekend.

@Immunol: I emailed Rockefeller a week ago but haven’t heard anything back from them. They’re supposed to have finished reviewing apps and have sent out decision letters by post by the 4th of Feb.

@boyinterrupted

I’m waiting on tulane too. But their due date was the beginning of February, I’m sure we will hear within the next week or two.

@alleycat393

I called Rockefeller on FEB 3rd. They didn’t tell me whether I was accepted or not. The guy told me that he didn’t know even though he was looking at my file on his computer, but he told me that mine was reviewed. He was just asking twice whether my mailing address was right. But, the guy told me Rocefeller were not done with reviewing of all applications.

rejection from mayo biomedical engineering

Any word or updates on NYU neural science?

Just got my acceptance to UGA Genetics! I loved Athens, I am so excited!

Mph. Still no word from Berkeley MCB, although it seems a few (at least two, via gradcafe and one here) have heard back since the past interview weekend.

Does anyone have inside knowledge on how they determine these things? Especially with respect to there being 2 interview weekends (one still yet to meet). Do they pick 10 or 15 top candidates after the first weekend, offer them spots, then wait on the rest? Or do they pick everyone who they think should get in and the rest are pretty much on a waitlist to see whether the next batch of interviewees is epic fail?

Biting my nails. The weekend went great (as did the one with Duke), but not hearing back from either of those (although they did mention that they were going to wait til the second interviews had come through) while others have is definitely wearing on my psyche.

Oh well, off to Cali: UCSD Biosciences tomorrow! That should put me in a better mood…

^I was accepted to Berkeley MCB via email the Thursday after the interview weekend. I am one of the people on thegradcafe who got in to Berkeley MCB.

Still freaking out about the Sackler interviews, you guys! Does anyone know how often do people get rejected after the interview?

Also, is anyone going to UW-Madison’s weekend in early March?

A.

@KemKem

I’ll be at the February 25th Interview! I hope it goes well since it seems many people are coming and I don’t have the best stats.

Did NYU Sackler put people up in a hotel? If so which one? I’m trying to decide if I should go by bus or train. I’ll be coming from DC area and they let me book my own way and will reimburse later. Do you think they’ll balk if I book the Acela which is more expensive than the northeast? Or how about the buses? They’re are some really cheap ones but the’re not comfortable at all. Will it look bad if I pick a more expensive bus?
