2012 Chancellor's Scholarship interviews

A question asked earlier was what is the criteria for Chancellors… it is a 1550 SAT (or 35? ACT).

Can you disclose your source?

^ pitt directly.

Due to the high number of quality applicants, the Chancellor’s Scholarship Selection Committee was forced to increase the SAT requirement for nomination. Currently, students must possess a 1550 or better SAT (math and critical reading scores) to receive nomination.

The review process for Engineering Scholarships is on-going. Those engineers selected to receive these awards will be notified by March 1.

Thank you for your interest in Pitt.

Associate Director

Office of Admissions and Financial Aid

Wow. We rarely get official answers to these questions. Thanks, crazymonster!

Does anyone happen to know if a student is chosen for the interview, can they just fly out themselves? Son still has an offer of $250 for travel stipend to use for Pitt and that would cover the cost of his flight were he chosen. I’d prefer he go alone due to the cost. Just wondering if anyone has that info.

Thanks.

^ I don’t think that parents are required to attend the interview. Seems to make sense to me to just send him on out :-).

The cost of on-campus interviews kept S from applying to some schools and from applying to some scholarship opportunities. Thankfully he was able to do 2 interviews on the phone (for honors programs/scholarships).

Public transportation in Pittsburgh also makes it an easy trip for a student.

MD Mom,

Good to hear. My son’s been to Pittsburgh once and loved it and would definitely like to visit again if he’s selected.

If he gets an interview, let us know and we can find out the specifics for him. Heck the university may provide transportation from the airport and back. Good luck.

Thank-you, MD Mom! :-)

There really isn’t a need for the parent to be there at all. The interview will be done privately between the student and the interviewer. Whenever the interviews happen and I was up at UHC, the parents seem to stress the kid sometimes: asking current students questions before the interview and what not. Plus you have to sit there alone during the interview (admittedly not a big deal). But it might be nice for the student to go up alone, talk to peers without having to worry about mom/dad listening in, and maybe hang out with a UHC student for the afternoon without having to have mom/dad tag along.

what’s the approx date that you begin to hear about interviews?

We are still waiting. Anyone heard anything? I think my son’s actually forgotten about it.

S made all-state band so I suggested he update all his schools with outstanding admissions and/or scholarship decisions. He e-mailed OAFA at Pitt and got the response that they’d forwarded his e-mail to the UHC (where Chancellor’s is based). Sounds like they’re still working.

@SteveC - Congrats to your son for making all-state!

Thanks. He’d been our area’s alternate (highest chair not making all-state) for two years running. It was a big weight off his shoulders.

Steve, congratulations to your son! That’s huge! My son’s friend, an amazing sax player here in So. Cal. also made all-state.

I didn’t even think about my son contacting Pitt. He’s going to be a Physics Olympiad semi-finalist again, an AIME qualifier again, and he’s going to be presenting his physics research at a symposium at the local state univ. and will compete for a few monetary awards at the symposium. I was just figuring it was too late to send in info now, but maybe not??

I’d say updates are fair game until we hear from them one way or another. I don’t really know what they’re looking for, but with your S’s portfolio, I think he should get an interview at the very least. The fact that we haven’t heard from you means they’re still working. :)

If you’re still waiting on anything (acceptance, UHC, money)-- always contact and update your application! It certainly can’t hurt :)

Does anyone receive an interview for CS so far?
