2012 Chancellor's Scholarship interviews

Our son is still waiting (hoping) for an CS interview. In all honesty, even though he scrambled to meet the deadline of his invitation to apply (last November) it is starting to fall off of his radar. Very strange that it is almost March and no one has posted that they have been invited and/or interviewed for the Chancellor’s Scholarship!

I called the school and was told they are still reviewing the apps. They expect the letters to go out within a week or two. Sounds like they are almost there… Good luck.

Called the school? What a concept! Seriously, thanks for being the group member who stepped up.

It’s not Highlander–there will definitely be more than one. Hopefully, it will be more than one of us. Good luck, everyone!

If they do what they did last year, 100 people will get interview invites from which they will pick 10-14.

It seems so late to be deciding. Many other schools have had their scholarship weekends (we just got back from one and they have already called my son) and are actually making decisions. I guess if Pitt is a first choice for a student, they will wait it out but I confess, due to the long wait, my son has already begun to make serious considerations elsewhere. :frowning: But, maybe he won’t get chosen anyways so the point will be moot! :-)

Many, if not all, Chancellor’s finalists will have already been offered full tuition. For a good number of kids, full tuition is enough and the Chancellor’s is just gravy. That is how we looked at it. As a matter of fact, we did not care if DD even applied for it because paying only room and board was a good deal for us.

In reality, this is still early to be hearing back. Bigger schools will not let regular admission students know about acceptance for another 1-2 weeks (I remember that I found out about CMU in mid-March).

Considering that deposit deadlines are May 1…that gives schools 2 months still to work out scholarships and send offers.

Pitt, being rolling, tends to get back to students faster. But it’s always good to remember that Pitt works faster than most places, and what seems like a long wait is actually justifiable at most other schools  Hang in there!

@MD Mom…our family’s sentiments exactly. Son likes Pitt a lot, we feel very fortunate with the full tuition offer but Chancellor’s would be icing on the cake! We are from Washington State, though, so we’re anxious to know one way or another just so we can make travel plans if, indeed, he is invited to interview!

@AwesomeOpossum, thanks for always having a sunny disposition and “in the know” answers. It is appreciated.

While I would love that to be the case, mich and MDMom, there is still a large gap that we cannot cover (and do not want debt, if possible) after a full tuition scholarship. My son is very thankful for that, particularly if he gets some of the other outside scholarships he’s applying for, but money is definitely a factor so yes, the Chancellor’s would be critical for him to attend Pitt.

sbjdorlo is being modest. I’ve been following her S on the 2012 parents thread. He will have to make a difficult choice from among several attractive options. I’m looking forward to seeing which one he chooses.

We’re in the “nice to have” camp, too. We were dragging our feet on visiting to see if a Chancellor’s interview was going to materialize but now it looks like we just need to bite the bullet and hit one of the Honors Days.

Ha-ha, Steve. Your son is the amazing one. Do you live near campus? My son would love to visit, truly he would, but it’s across the country; thus, we will wait until he hears if he’s a finalist or not. I’d love to hear your impressions of the campus, programs, and anything else you’d like to share. :-)

We’re on the other side of the country, too, just north-south as opposed to east-west. From your visit to UTD, imagine driving about 3.5 hours roughly SSE into the east Texas woods. That’s us.

Pitt is so far our lowest-cost option and also seems just about optimal for S’s intended majors so he’s wanting to go ahead and deposit even though he’s yet to hear from three schools. I’m buying time with the visit. :)

SteveC, my daughter had good feelings about Pitt, too. She did not see it until February of her senior year. There really is no need to send the deposit now. Some schools give priority to early deposits, but not Pitt.

Do we hear either way?

I believe so. I vaguely remember getting a letter saying something to the effect of “thanks for applying but you’re not getting interviewed”.

i emailed the guy at the beginning of the week about my status and he said that on wednesday or thursday the committee was getting together to do a final review of the applications so we’ll see :)

Okay, I’ve been reading last year’s thread.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-pittsburgh/1048763-chancellors-nominee-scholarship-8.html

Seems like they revamped the whole process this year…

How so? According to the web page, they plan to invite fewer people for interviews (50 rather than 100) but to award the same number of scholarships. The dates have slipped a little, too, but that’s all I can see that’s different.

Well, the main difference is that it was rolling last year…

It seems based on the thread that it was not (all the letters for interviews were mailed at the same time. From my own memory of UHC/interviews, it was most definitely NOT rolling last year. Interviews only happened in the spring.
