So… how many waitlists are you guys on? I’m on two only technically but my entire schedule is filled with pointless classes that serve no purpose for me. I can’t even get on a waitlist for RTF.

When I got home I figured out how to make my schedule work. I wrote a lot of things out and made a couple phone calls and got into my classes. The only thing that is weird is that I’m trying PHYSICS but the lab component is full so I wait listed in it. I’m number 1/2 on the wait list though.
God help the last orientation w/ getting classes. <.<

Yeah but you are actually in your major. I was told some RTF courses MIGHT open up. I have two classes where I am 6/6 on the waitlist (and neither one of those classes are very big in the first place). I honestly don’t think I even want to go if I have such a ****ty schedule. I might as well stay home and reapply and hope I get into RTF.

Well the way I’d look at it is be excited you are at one of the top universities in the world. Unfortunately the University is horrible with scheduling and you’ve taken a whole lot of your core already but the good thing is that next semester will be LOADS better because you can choose your classes early. I wouldn’t let it stress you out, I’d say that probably 90% of the UGS students are in the same boat as you. Every UGS student has been telling me the EXACT same thing that you have. I do think that the University did mislead applicants that were offered UGS into thinking that they’d be able to take a LOT of their major courses without being declared… apparently this is false.

What I would do is attend this upcoming semester, get the best classes for the Spring and contact RTF about allowing you to take those prereqs in the Spring.

Yeah but I already meet most of the prereqs (RTF 305). The only thing not allowing me to take any RTF courses is the fact that I’m not a RTF student. Even if I end up getting to take some courses next semester it’s not like I can just load up on a bunch of project-based courses in one semester. I needed to space them out. Besides, literally not one of my courses serves any purpose to me. I don’t see the point of wasting valuable money when I can just raise my GPA a little higher and attempt getting into RTF. Hopefully I can work something out because UT was my golden ticket out of here.

Well if you choose not to attend you’ll have to find a way to get yourself reset in the system so that you can use UTDirect again for the Spring… I definitely do see your point though, if you can get some more A’s at LSC that could bring you up just enough to get you declared into Liberal Arts…

However on the other end, I’m actually in your boat because I can only take 3 CS courses by requirement of the university. So I have to take 3 CSs and 1 worthless course each system in order to stay marked as full time. So if you do decide to stay in the Fall you could plan out to have yourself situated to do that in the Spring. What I would literally do first thing tomorrow is call RTF Advising and ask them if there is ANYTHING they can do to let you in those classes. You never know what could happen. :)

All lower division RTF classes will be open without restrictions after the last orientation (probably except 318). You will not be allowed to sign for more than 2, and it will be VERY TIME CONSUMING.
You can take RTF 316M Race, Ethnicity and the Media, it can be
- Communication and Culture course 2. CD flag 3. lower division course toward 12 hours

You can also take 1 additional E/ RHE class
and
Communication courses: 6 hours outside your major (I would suggest advertising, if you get loans for this major, prepare to do commercials to pay them back)

I have ADV 305 now. I was going to do 316 but as soon as 1pm hit it closed up on me. Also is 6/6 on a waitlist good or bad?

6/6 which class?
If it’s something with 15-25 students it’s not good. Class over 100 people - you’ll most likely get in.

CS302 (plenty of sections) and a AMS class (the one about superheroes).

Is CS302 your SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY, PART I or PART II class?
Did you take any science classes in CC?

And why are you taking AMS 311S MYTH/HISTORY: AM SUPERHERO?
The site says:
“Writing, reading, and discussion on an American studies topic, with emphasis on the evaluation of information, analytical reading, and critical writing.
May be counted toward the writing flag requirement.
Topic description: This course examines the reasons and repercussions of the American love affair with the superhero, focusing on the 20th century, in which the genre of the superhero came to be most explicitly defined and explored.”

If you don’t have American History credit you need to take a class that says “Partially fulfills legislative requirement for American history”, for example AMS 310 INTRO TO AMERICAN STUDIES.
Otherwise it’s a waste of time and money, you cannot afford to take classes just for fun if you are taking loans to finance them.
If you are worrying about Writing Flag requirement, take E/RHE additional class or UGS with writing flag. And a lot of RTF classes (Media studies especially, 6 hours required) will have writing flag.
You’d better drop this Supeheroes class.

If you cannot get into university core curriculum classes, don’t worry about them, take classes that are required by the college of communication this semester, next semester you are going to register as a junior/sophomore???, you’ll register before freshmen. And Spring semester registration is usually less crazy than Fall.

CS302 will cover my science part II. And I think I will drop the AMS class since it was mostly an elective anyway. This means that literally not one of my current classes is good for me. I’d have to replace them all.

Edit: I just replaced my AMS waitlist with CMS 314L. I’m for sure in at least ADV 305 and will likely keep the class (since it gets me another communications credit as well as the fact that the professor has a high ratemyprofessor rating). I’m five of five on the waitlist but there about about three waitlists open and two of them are good for my current schedule.

Okay so some of the RTF courses randomly opened up. Like some of them said open instead of open;restricted. There was a blue prereq button above some of them for 305. It did that for like five minutes and now it’s back to normal. Any idea on what just happened? I attempted to enroll but it still wouldn’t let me.

CMS 314L LANG, COMMUNICATION, & CULTURE is a very good class, it covers Wr, CD and communication and culture requirement, you don’t need RTF 316M then.

I don’t know what happened with registration, I have never registered myself and don’t even know how it looks like. But if you go to registrar’s site and look up schedules from previous years you’ll see that most of RTF LL classes are not restricted. I am sure they open them for “general public” after all students already enrolled in major registered.

You can also contact RTF advisor and ask
[Academic Advising | College of Communication](http://communication.utexas.edu/students/academic-advising)

What is RTF LL?

Lower Level
UP - Upper level

JP, since you’ve already taken ENGL 1302 (RHE 309K) you already have your first writing flag. The only flag you’d be missing would be your upper-division writing flag which is usually achieved your senior year by your major.

Communication has it’s own writing flag as well as Cultural Diversity I believe.

So Im really confused. Yesterday I registered for all my classes, my I read that i have to confirm my attendance if not all my classes will be dropped. How do I confirm my attendance?

To confirm your attendance, you need to check your “My Tuition” page to see when your final tuition bill has been posted. (Google: UT My Tuition) Even if you aren’t paying tuition (scholarship, etc.) you still go to the same page to click “confirm registration.” If you do this successfully, a message in green letters will appear above your tuition bill saying “you’ve confirmed your registration/attendance and your classes are secured”.
