Our DD got an email today letting her know that she did NOT advance in the competition. She had heard earlier in the month that the local lodge had awarded her a scholarship, however.

I’m almost positive that the email mean district level.

My state person said that “The State committee plans to meet (weather permitting) January 25, so District judging will need to be completed before then. The State Committee must have their finalists sent on to Chicago by February 12.”

I find it odd that often times the people who do not advance to the district round are given local scholarships.

Does anyone know how many go to the district and the state levels? I know there are 500 national winners and 20 finalists.

@yoskis- Please clarify. Going to district? Going to state?

For those who haven’t heard check your spam and deleted messages. I KNOW I didn’t delete any messages yesterday and I found my email in there. Weird. This is advancing to district I believe.

@mich5225 the email from the elks means advancing to district.

The districts need to be done judging on the 25th-at least in my state-sooo expect another email sometime after that saying if you advanced to state.

However, it took them some time to get the first email out when the local lodges completed judging by the 1st so expect delays.

yoskis, agreed on why local applications not advancing are sometimes awarded scholarships, while those advancing to district or even state could come up empty-handed…is that your perception?

I think your assessment as the National email meaning advancing to district must be correct…and the communication was just slow in coming.

I’m sure if you make it out of the district and move to the state, you won’t know anything til at least the first of February, given this timeline.

I am wondering whether they award straight-up 10 winners for equal representation from each state, or if that varies, ie: large states have more, small states have fewer … anyone know?

Has anyone on this forum submitted from Kentucky?

Has anyone seen a list of states who award local or district scholarships? I don’t know how this is determined … seems kind of random.

Any past winners or people in the know - would love to hear from you :-)

If you go on the national elks site and look at last years winners by state you will find how many we’re awarded last year for your state. Some local lodges offer several smaller scholarships but only one advances to district. Some lodges offer no local scholarships. It is all dependent on their funds and policies.

I agree with Shiloh77. You can look at the website:

[Elks National Foundation :: MVS Scholarship Recipients Contest Winners](MVS Scholarship Recipients)

NC had 8 state winners and Alaska had 6. California had 500+ (only kidding about that number, but it was too many for me to want to count.)

very helpful, thank you, Shiloh77 & mich5225. I had been on that website at one time, but didn’t realize it contained that breakdown. All states have varying amounts of representation throughout the last 5 years…and some states have 15 winners, while others have 3 … wish I knew how this worked :-)

My son got the email yesterday letting him know that he advanced. No word about a local scholarship, so maybe our lodge doesn’t have any local scholarships available.

Does anyone know if only one from each lodge advances to district?

For those of you who did not get an email yesterday, this is the reply I got from the national ELKS about it.

“All the emails went out yesterday about Lodge winners and non-winners. If you didn’t receive one, you can follow up with your Lodge”

Soccermom, 3 boys and 3 girls advance from each lodge

Thanks, jjonesjonny65!

Ugg! We called the lodge and the lady I spoke with had no information. I explained that we hadn’t received an email yet. She said “Once we submit them to the district we don’t have any information.” Luckily she is going to call and try to find something out for us.

I made it to state level in Indiana!!

DD got a letter from the local lodge informing her that their scholarship was for $1250. Nice!

Still no email… I’m just going to assume that I didn’t advance so I don’t have to dread over it any longer. Haha.

Juliaax, just email your lodge or your state chairman and figure out info about your application. Maybe they can let you know

@MidwesternHeart - Congrats to your daughter! I would be super excited if my son gets that much out of this scholarship!! He moved on in the competition but no word on any local scholarships (yet).

^^ ditto, mine advanced, but no word on local.

MidwesternHeart, can you advise as to what state you’re in? The national site does seem to have added some information since the last time I checked, with a Q&A.
