2015 Yale Waitlist Discussion Thread

Congratulations to all the recent admittees! D sent in updates but we have not heard anything. I’m guessing the already slim chances are even slimmer now.

Anyone think that calls will be made for a second day [today]?

Sending a letter probably does not influence the decisions much-- I believe that the admissions office generally know who they need to fill up the rest of the spots.
I was accepted off the wait list and did not send in any updates (not that I had any!).

My daughter received a call yesterday around 5:30 pm. We live in Upstate NY. She was deferred SCEA and then waitlisted Regular Decision. She did not send any follow up information.

Two students from her high school declined (three were accepted in total) so this may have opened a spot for her.

She is very excited and despite already accepting an offer from Princeton she is planning to accept the Yale spot - her dream college.

I commend all of you for surviving this stressful process and hope you are happy with whatever school you attend.

Hopefully they will have a second round of acceptances next week like last year

So do international students usually hear about getting off the waitlist later than those in the U.S do (I live like twelve time zones away)? If not, then I guess my chance of getting into Yale now is pretty slim…

I would guess that acceptances are coming out earlier than usual because the yield was slightly lower than expected (which would not be surprising, given the news stories about Yale during April). Thus, admissions officers had already started looking at the waitlist in late April. Thus, don’t be surprised if rejections come late, and acceptances come over a long period of time.

^
I don’t think the yield was lower at all, in fact I think it may have been higher this year. I think admissions is very prepared with waitlist decisions and made calls quite promptly. There was quite a RD admit shuffle.

as sam12241992 noted above, last year yale made its waitlist offers on may 8. this year it was may 9. so it’s not true that they’re making calls any earlier this year than in the past – yale is offering its few waitlist spots at the same time as in past years.

To all waitlisted acceptees: Do you consider yourself math-science oriented? The people I know who got off the waitlist all consider themselves math-science heavy, and considering the lack of appeal for Yale’s Science/Engineering program, I’m not surprised if they tried to get more students into that program.

My son is definitely science oriented. His essay was on his passion for science and he plans to major in Biology. I don’t understand your comment about the lack of appeal for the science program though considering Yale is in the top 10 in almost every category including research. What am I missing?

“I don’t understand your comment about the lack of appeal for the science program though considering Yale is in the top 10 in almost every category including research. What am I missing?”

Yale science programs are pretty good, but probably not elite ([Top Science Schools (usnews.com)](http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-science-schools)). Its US news and world report rankings in science 2011 are the followings: Biolological sciences-7, Chemistry-13, Computer science-20, Earth sciences-12, Mathematics-10, Physics-11, Statistics-33.

I was specifically speaking of Biology which they are in the top 10 in every category and #3 in Cell Biology and Immunology.

Kdog044, your stats on biology at Yale are absolutely right. i chose Yale b/c its life sciences are excellent. i also love the student/faculty ratio of 3:1. biological science is one of the five most popular majors at Yale (it’s also one of the top 5 at MIT and Stanford, but not at Harvard and Princeton.) btw, it doesn’t look like they’re taking many off the waitlist – but yale always makes its waitlist decisions earlier than some other schools.

a student from Nanjing, china just got off WL

When Yale calls someone off the wait list, do they call your home phone or cell? I notice most people are receiving calls in the afternoon. Also, how does the call appear on caller ID? Does it indicate Yale is calling, or does it say “unknown caller” or something of that sort?

My son received his call on his cell phone but we don’t have a land line. The number just showed up just like any other would but it indicated the call was from New Haven. He received his call in the afternoon and we are on EDT.

thank you kdogg044! We had a couple of missed calls on the home phone, but neither said New Haven–oh well.

Please help! I’m in California and I got a call from a (203) number, which apparently is from Connecticut. I’m a fellow Yale waitlistee. The call was yesterday, but I left the phone in the car and I missed it. What could this possibly mean? Is a call a good thing or a bad thing?

That was the AC of the number my son received his call from. I would try calling it back but you may have to wait until Monday. I doubt it would be a bad thing as they ae not going to call people to reject them.
