Both of my kids had real flowers for their wedding cakes. I also had real flowers for D2’s engagement cake.

Flowers and fruits decorated the cake at the party we hosted in our hometown a couple months after the wedding (our daughter and son-in-law were married in a small ceremony 1200 miles away, which was fine with us, but we wanted to celebrate with our friends as well).

My D is getting married at the beginning of August in London, where she’s lived for 7 years. The wedding will be in the afternoon at the church she attends, and I am planning to wear a hat or a fascinator.

We’ll be flying there from the United States. Any experience or suggestions for traveling with a hat so it doesn’t get squished?

How exciting! Congratulations!

I’d buy a sturdy hat box to avoid any “oops” moments on the plane.

Size/style considerations - in addition to its own sturdy box, have it as a carry-on if at all possible. IDK if you would find it easier to find a dress and then the hat/fascinator. The London shops might have better options since they seem to have more occasions for hats. Except for Kentucky Derby - can see where hats are obtained for those events here in the US.

Congratulations! Could your daughter buy a hat or fascinator for you in advance in London? She could send pictures to you with possibilities.

We are pretty sure we will all be invited to nephew’s wedding, wherever they decide to have it. Probably it will be in HNL since both families live there, but perhaps LA, since they’re there now and even have a house there.

Hats can be rented as well.

I absolutely love the clothing Brits wear to weddings. If ds ever gets married, I’ve seriously thought about ordering from the UK.

It looks like it helps to be tall and have an ample budget

I’ll check with my D about the possibility of getting a hat there.

I do have a dress - funny story, 12 years ago I was shopping in my hometown department store (Dillards) and they were having a huge sale. I saw a fancy, beautiful dress that was originally $300 on sale for $30. I loved it, and thought it would make a great MOB dress, and for $30, even though she wasn’t engaged (she did have a [different] boyfriend) it was worth the investment.

I wore it to a couple of fancy occasions after I got it. Then I gained weight. I’ve also moved 6 times in the past 12 years for H’s job, taking the dress with me each time. I have been on one of the weight-loss drugs and have lost a little over 40 lbs and the dress fits again!

I had a panic/anxiety nightmare that it was the day of the wedding and I forgot to pack my shoes (which I haven’t even bought yet). I told D about the dream and she said I’d better not forget my shoes, since I wear a wide width and she said that’s hard to find in London. But hopefully getting a hat/fascinator will be easier!

The ones on that website are gorgeous, but definitely more than I would like to spend. I’ve seen some cute ones on Etsy that are more in my price range.

Can you have the hat delivered to London?

That’s a possibility I hadn’t considered - but if I’m buying it off the internet, I probably want to try it on first to make sure it matches my dress color and looks okay on my head.

Makes sense!

Good news about the dress and that you already like it and can wear it for the wedding! I agonized over getting the right dress for my son’s 2022 wedding.
