2016 and beyond wedding moms and dads (Part 2)

Wedding in October. Approaching fast!

We just got the digital photos from son’s May wedding. They turned out very well. Some very beautiful shots. My husband figured out how to do a screenshot of the pictures so haven’t decided if we want to order any prints or not from the photographer. I have an Aura digital frame and I think I will have him transfer some of the screenshots to it for now.

Congratulations, @showmom858 !
How exciting, @bhs1978 ! Not much longer!

Thanks @sevmom
While screen shottimg a few pics might be nice, don’t forget that the photographer is running a business and may need some income also.
Also we did that with my sister in laws family picture from her wedding. It’s hanging on the wall with other family photos and now it is completely faded out. I regret not getting the professional one that is guaranteed not to fade and I have no way of replacing it.
So glad you got some beautiful photos also.

Thanks @bhs1978 . My son and his wife (not me) paid for the photographer and I’m sure will be buying lots of photos . My sister in law told me today that she has already purchased a few prints and I’m sure others will as well. I may purchase a few prints but probably not many. I really don’t display a lot of framed photos , and have never had any photos on the walls, and the old photo albums I have rarely get looked at. So, just trying to keep things simple in my old age!

Got it. Good plan. Just like to throw out thoughts you might not have thought of.

Thanks. Just planning a few screenshots for personal use to have on the phone . May order a few prints. We’re just not big picture people these days. Appreciate your thoughts. Enjoy the buildup to your October wedding! Hope everything is coming along nicely!

Just a note re: professional photos. Under the copyright law (a federal law rooted in the Constitution), unless agreed otherwise, the photographer is the legal owner of those pictures (some states add certain conditions to that). When you hire a photographer, check your contract. It should spell out what you get for the $$. Negotiate.

Here is some background information:

/Not your copyright lawyer… check with your attorney if in doubt.

Many photographers do include the digital downloads as part of the package these days. That was the case for D’s wedding. Agree that it has to be discussed and agreed to in advance.

Absolutely. Check. The photographer was very high end, expensive. Has already put ā€œsneak peaksā€ of their wedding on her website.

@happy1 - is my post a problem? I’m posting this as an FYI. Not all are aware about the copyright release issues. So when shopping for a photographer, do compare contracts.

Yes. This was included in the photographer cost at our DDs wedding. I’m sure our cost was more pricey, but these folks are running a business…and we loved the pictures.

Not a problem at all…just want to say that in some cases (including my D’s recent wedding) the photographer will include rights to the pictures in their package. Agree that people need to come to an an understanding with the photographer before signing a contract.

Mine cut by decreasing the guest list. 50 people, destination wedding in the mountains of CO in August '23. They wanted a beautiful venue, marry and reception in same place. Food and photography are their big items. Music not so much. Her dress did go over budget. I hadn’t even asked my son about a groom’s cake. He probably couldn’t care less and would want a nicer meal. I don’t think the cake is all that important to them other than it looks pretty. They want simple and elegant. Party favors will probably be a no but I’m not the bride’s mother so she will make that decision. The bride will give in to her since she is paying. We are still early on with the website just in development, the venue booked, the photographer booked and the dress ordered. The rest is yet to come. We have a year and a month. They will be really busy once school starts so are trying to do as much as possible now.

I have a son getting married in September. It’s a very small wedding (less than 25), and will be at a very nice restaurant, on a weekday. It will be the ceremony (hopefully outdoors, but weather dependent) cocktail ā€œhourā€ (just time to take photos, everyone will stay on site), and then dinner. They are not having a cake (so far), but there will be wonderful desserts. For them it’s mostly about the food.

No groom’s cake for my son’s May wedding. It never came up and wasn’t missed. There was a groom’s cake at one of his friend’s weddings a while ago though, so some are definitely still doing it. A wedding in the mountains of Colorado sounds great!

@showmom858 congratulations! I assume the wedding will be in the San Diego area? If you have any insight on affordable venues when you start looking, please PM me! My oldest got engaged a few months ago and wants to marry in San Diego where she and her fiance live. Finding a venue is proving difficult b/c she works long hours and her fiance is not always available on weekends. I’m across the country so can’t help much. She wants a small wedding, 50-75 people, and that’s if everyone on the invite list comes. Virtually everyone on both sides, other than their local friends, has to fly and with high travel costs and covid, not sure how many will choose to go. She is looking at fall 2023/early 2024. So far, she has only looked at a few places, mostly wineries that are inland.

@4kids4us - Thank you! I will let you know what we find once we start looking. D1 says they will probably wait until 2024 to get married. Although she grew up in La Jolla she doesn’t want to get married at the beach. They both would like a more rustic setting for their wedding. We probably will not start looking at places for another 6 weeks until she finishes with her masters.

@showmom858 my D surprised me by not wanting a beachy wedding either. She is also looking for something a little more rustic I think.

H & I had a groom’s cake at our wedding because his mom & sister insisted. I had no part in that, and I am pretty sure H didn’t, either. It’s great if it means something to the couple (or the couple’s parents), but it’s not something midwestern folks are expecting. It’s funny what gets people riled up - his mom & sister were honestly upset with us that D/SIL didn’t have one.

No groom’s cake at D’s wedding (or at our wedding many years ago). Not even a conversion about it.
