2017 - 2018 USC Transfer

Hey lads,

I received a SGR today, I applied as a sophomore Viterbi applicant with a horrendous GPA for the previous two semesters: 3.31 cumulative. Hope this helps for some other Viterbi applicants with GPA’s like mine.

@UCLAorUCBTRNSFR they use both to sort of gauge the personality of the applicant they’re reviewing, but they’re not that important. If anything, I’d say they care more about the essays. They care most about GPA, meeting the math and English requirements, GE requirements, and taking transferable courses with a full time load.

@penntousc I would have to disagree with you. Maybe they aren’t as tough on you about it As the Ivy’s or so,
But it will make or break you. You’re competing against thousands of other students, that all have high GPAs, for a limited number of spots. It makes a difference.

I heard from someone that they use transfers to replace the freshmen/sophomores that failed out or dropped out

Hi guys! I just checked my portal and saw that I got an SGR. Is this a good thing? Does this mean they’re leaning towards accepting me? I’m not really sure how to feel about it to be honest. I applied to Marshall btw!

Wait Viterbi started then? YIKESSSS.

don’t think so @tylerlynn

@tankle104 lol I guess you’ll have to disagree with my USC admissions counselor too, because what I just told you came straight from the horses mouth.

As for the other part, that’s why I said in my opinion lol I don’t know for sure, but they’re much more forgiving in the transfer process. 25-30% acceptance rate for transfers, 16-17% acceptance rate for freshman. Stats don’t lie.

how long does the SGR letter take to come in the mail? I got the notice on my portal on friday and I still haven’t gotten the letter, and I live 20 min away from USC.

also I’m an incoming sophomore for whoever asked about sophomores/juniorsl getting SGRs!

DId anyone else from Viterbi get anything?

@delzzz321 did you apply to Marshall?

@lilz are you a sophomore or junior applicant?

They just requested my transcript from another university that I attended–the thing is, I went there for a semester and had horrible, horrible grades (like you can’t even fathom) because of certain situations going on. Should i explain this in depth to my counselor or should I just send it and give her a brief overview? I’ve already sent her the transcripts and she said she received it, but I’m just worried that it’s going to reflect poorly on me…what do you guys think?

Other than that, my grades are stellar at the current CC I’m going to and I hope it shows that I’ve changed and have it in me to do well at USC ;;

@Shuisazn how long ago were those bad grades? If it was your first semester (or something like that) and you’ve had a really good upward trend, I doubt they’ll matter too much

@Shuisazn Its definitely great that you’ve done extremely well this semester at the current CC you’re attending so that also shows them improvement and growth. It wouldn’t hurt for you to explain the situation to your counselor so that they don’t fill in the blanks themselves. Whether you tell them in-depth or brief, that’s up to you, but I would keep it long enough so that they are well informed on the situation, but short enough so that they don’t feel, “ugh another longggg thing to read” (not saying they actually think that, but you don’t want to be overly wordy – our essay for USC is limited to 650, so I would do a similar thing for this explanation and keep it around 500 words, obviously you don’t need to count words hahahaha just a suggestion!) Good luck!

Well what I just said came from someone that personally reads the applications and chose who was admitted. So yeah, I’ll have to disagree with you. What you’re saying literally doesn’t make sense lol yeah your GPA is really important but so Aes the other things. It’s how they choose between everyone that has a high GPA. You can’t choose everyone with a high GPA because there are limited spots. lol you’re saying that just a high GPA will get you in, so just about everyone would get in if that was true

@tayloralext

I have no news whatsoever! By the way, I don’t know which post you followed up for me on this forum. I had all my financial aid information taken care of early in February/March (can’t remember). The only problems I had to be clear were my transcripts (fall semester grades on a transcript for one college in another state and my current transcript for a class I did in intersession in a california cc)!

I currently live in SoCal and no mail/letter. I’m applying as a Narrative Studies major (first choice) and English (second choice) under dornsife!

@cassidylynnn omg congrats!!! :~)

@tankle104 @penntousc hahah I’m somewhat in between you guys. I think that EC’s definitely take a backseat to GPA and stuff like that, but ECs, letters of rec, essays, etc are what set people apart, push over from denied to accepted (and vice versa) and what can potentially cause them to chose you over someone else with similar stats. So they are definitely important in that aspect, even if its not the 1st thing they look at.

@The WorrisomeGirl I haven’t heard anything back either… Hopefully we will get something soon! Good luck to us all!!! AHHHHH its almost over!

@itslife123 VITERBI HYPE! I hope that person wasn’t joking about hearing back from viterbi
