@penntousc It was from Fall 2015! So quite a while ago, but once I went to CC, I’ve had a 4.0 throughout.
@mellyjune The bad semester was at a pretty high up four year university ;; But with everything going on, I came back and went to a CC instead for three (this is my third) semesters! I think I’ll explain more to her if she asks in depth, but I don’t want to give her a whole sob story in case it seems too…desperate? LOL
@mellyjune yeah I agree with you. GPA is The most important but taking the extra curriculars lightly isnt a good thing. @penntousc and I are pretty much agreeing besides how important the extra curriculars are. Either way, I’m sure we all have Good chance
@Shuisazn it takes great maturity to be able to take a step back and take time when you are having a hard time. I greatly respect you for that. Not everyone can do that! I totally understand what you said about not wanting to give the whole ‘sob story’ for fear of sounding desperate - which I also respect, because it shows you aren’t wanting to make excuses for your lower grades or using a personal story for sympathy. I would consider sending your counselor a quick outline of what happened so she can keep it in mind even if you don’t go full out and tell her the step by step story.
However, that being said, its great that you improved greatly in the most recent semesters so even if you do not necessarily tell your counselor what happened, they will know that you have improved regardless of the reasons for your lower grade. BUT (sorry for all the howevers and buts haha), since you received lower grades at a high level private university, you may want to outline a little of what happened, because USC will want to see that you can handle a full course load at a 4 year university. Not saying the CCs are lower in comparison, some are extremely tough, but you don’t want your counselor to worry that there is a difference of performance depending on the institution you are attending. Does that make sense?
You obviously have some time to think it over since it is likely a personal issue that happened. Just trying to give my 2 cents so you consider the consequences of either telling your counselor or not. Hope it helps just a little!
By the way, if anyone is curious, I applied last year as a junior applicant with only 54 units (which might has hurt me) lmao. I didn’t take any math classes or complete a science lab (physical) at the time of my application. It was apparently not a problem for NYU since I applied to the film school. However, I did get rejected from USC SCA last year. I decided to go to CC for another year! This school year was a lot different because I moved from my original state to California to attend a California CC this spring semester.
I think…after this spring semester I will have 82 CC semester credits under my belt! My cumulative GPA combining all my grades from the last CC and this CC is 3.86/3.87 (lol idk actually but all A’s and a few B’s–like 3). (So, I am a super junior?)
Instead of applying to the competitive SCA this time, I just called it quit and decided I really wanted to go to USC and wouldn’t mind attending as a Narrative Studies/English major. My application this time is actually a lot stronger this time compared to last time, I actually mentioned an internship at a museum I got and my interests in photography. Last year’s essays were awful…including my SCA application.
Alas…as May drags on…I feel like puking every time it draws closer to the end of May. I remembered vividly everyone getting rejected at the end of May. :’(
And. . . no SGR . . .which I honestly think is a good thing because they’re reviewing applications TT__TT"
@mellyjune Yes!!! Good luck to you and everyone. USC is definitely super laggy this cycle around. . . A LOT of people I felt last year heard back around this time. It just naturally makes me anxious, but I am very hopeful!
@tankle104 1. No where did I say “high GPA gets you in”… 2. A person that reads applications is called an admissions counselor, which is also the person I spoke to… 3. Number of GE requirements met, grades in major pre reqs, completed units, and course transferability are all things that help to distinguish some students from others.
I’m not trying to have a big argument lol, I understand what you’re saying, but I’m not downplaying how significant ECs are. If two applicants are basically identical, and are both qualified in terms of academics, and only one can be accepted, than yes, non academic factors would be considered. What I’m saying is, ECs don’t compensate for low GPA and requirement completion as they might for other schools. So even if someone has had like 3 internships and is the president of 2 clubs and volunteers 5 days a week, if they haven’t completed enough GE courses, or they have a low GPA, those ECs won’t make up all of that ground that they’ve lost due to academics. I just think it’s important that people know that because I’ve seen applicants who have admittedly loaded up on ECs to build an application, but in return, their GPA and coursework progress took a hit, and so they were rejected.
@Transfer510 nope! not yet (at least not posted by anyone on the thread). Not everyone comes online to post that they were rejected, but rejections usually don’t come out until end of may!
@Transfer510 hahaha well a good deal of acceptances and SGRs have yet to be released as well so keep your chin up! (I say this as my hands are shaking hahaha)
Hey guys! I pretty much have been checking this thread every 30 minutes for the past week lol. I haven’t seen any international relations dornsife majors post on here. IR major, if you’re reading this, please let me know if you’ve received an SGR or an acceptance!!! I got a winter grade request April 21st. I’m a junior transfer applicant and will be completing 60 units by the end of this semester (I graduated high school last year). I’m hoping my winter transcript appeals to them and that they notice the upward trend
I got a 3.5 at a four year university last semester (sophomore applicant) but am most likely going to get a 4.0 this semester. Do you think I should email my counselor explaining that I’ve been trying a lot harder this semester? I want to get an SGR so that I can show them that I have improved… but won’t have that opportunity if I get outright rejected
