2017 - 2018 USC Transfer

@marcollege17 I totally understand your concern but I would not encourage you sending an email because people have asked their counselors the same question and they have all been told that it is better to hold off until you actually get a request. You don’t want to give them extra stuff to read that they didn’t ask for.
In your case, your GPA was not that low to begin with and unless there was a personal story that you think is really essential for them to know, I wouldn’t send anything. In addition, getting them that info when they didn’t ask for it really isn’t going to be the one thing that stops them from rejecting you if that is what they have decided to do, if that makes sense…
Good luck though! I really wouldn’t worry too much because your GPA from last semester really is not that low. Great job with that 4.0 though!!!

@penntousc Who is saying that EC’s are important?, because while they are a factor, those are not the things that will get you in. The three most important things are 1.Taking the Right Courses. 2. GPA 3. Essays, are the most important. If you think amazing E.C’s will make up for a poor gpa then you’ve got it wrong.

^ This isn’t high school anymore

@itslife123 i think the argument is that ECs would be the fourth or fifth important thing and that they are not to be completely ignored  There seems to have been a slight misunderstanding that @penntousc said that they were not important even though that was not what was said

I suppose so, but if you nailed down the top 3 really well, you wouldn’t have to worrry about EC’s making up for it. After all they say they review hollistically so it may it might not

@mellyjune Thank you, great advice!

@itslife123 they would really only come to play if USC could only accept one of two people who are equal in the top 3 categories, or if they are on the edge on accepting an applicant or not.
Or if there was a special case where the GPA may not be the highest but the applicant had super memorable/unique ECs

I’m an IR applicant (jr. transfer) and I have not received anything yet. My admissions counselor did contact me today to ask a question about my application. We got everything squared away and she said my application would be ready for review now. That’s the last thing I’ve heard. Hope this helps. They are starting to look over all application materials for the decision making process to start, her words.

@sabkam do you mind sharing your stats? You’re the first IR applicant I’ve ever seen on here. I’m honestly so relieved you posted earlier.

When I said ECs, I wasn’t talking about volunteering or something dumb like that. Im talking working during the semester (proves you’re responsible among other things), internships, clubs etc. they matter. lol regardless of where you want to put them on a “totem pole of importance”, they matter.

He said it won’t make or break you and I think it can, that is where this started. I said just about everyone applying has a really good GPA so you need something to separate yourself from all the other high GPAs (which is pretty much every applicant). I’m not saying ECs are more important than essays or grades. They do play a role in admissions.

It can also be a good reason why you didn’t get a 4.0 , working and going to school full time or doing internships are valid reasons why you didn’t ace school. Because if you’re doing nothing but school and don’t get a 4.0, then there aren’t many good excuses as to why you didn’t get straight As

There are a certain number of students they can take in lol they don’t take ALL the good applicants. So no, nailing down the top 3 things you mentioned might not get you in. This admissions process is a competition lol best applicants win. Certain number of spots, only certain students get in. Not All of the good students can get in. So people that were perfectly qualified might not get accepted

I just got my letter of acceptance. Do we have a Facebook group?

@tankle104 thats definitely one of the roughest aspects of applying to a school - knowing that you may not get in despite being a perfect applicant because there just isn’t enough space.

Congratulations! @yslo2

Yeah but that is the real world. There will be times you don’t get a job because someone was more qualified, or knew someone at the company etc. there will be many times you’ll be qualified but just didn’t get it. Just don’t let it discourage you. Keep working on yourself and keep trying. Even if any of us don’t get into USC. It isn’t the end of the world. We just pick ourselves up and keep going

I feel pretty strong about my essays and ec’s and how they relate to IR. The C ruined my GPA. In high school I took a cc physics class and got a D in it. I retook it last semester and got a C. I don’t even know why I took the physics class in the first place given that I don’t even need it in order to transfer. My only hope is that they might take into consideration that the rest of my grades are decent and there’s improvement, and that the C is in a course that has no relation to my major.

Annenberg is killing me here…

@penntousc I believe barely junior level, if not sophomore. I’m not too sure what class level they will put me in because I need to see what transfers over. @pomeranian4rich Thank you! We’re representing PCC hahaha. I just posted my stats

@dvalenc7 Pasadena City College?? Same here!

Is it pretty much guaranteed that if you have a pre req in spring you will get a SGR? I’m taking the Writing 150 equivalent spring semester and I really don’t want a SGR because UCI is due 6/1. Wasn’t able to take it last semester because the class was full :frowning: Most of my GEs have already been finished and I’ve taken a handful of business related classes already…

@nayu917 I got an SGR just because of one pre req that I needed from my major. So it might be the case for your english class as well since english is extremely important. But im hoping you get an acceptance without an SGR  best of luck
