2017 - 2018 USC Transfer

Hey! Have been lurking for a while, just wanted to pay the favor forward. I got an SGR dated May 4, 2017. Junior transfer applicant (regular), my GPA is really spotty…probably would be 3.3-3.4 for UC, 3.5 if you include my winter grades, but I don’t know if USC would be more willing to accept some of my funkier classes (i went to a liberal arts university my first year).

I could understand why, as my grades have been a roller coaster pattern. mostly A’s semester 1, Bs & a C semester 2 and all As up til winter quarter.

I’m a Dornsife (psychology) applicant! Don’t really know what to expect from now lol. Kinda bummed but kinda relieved, too. I’d appreciate some insight about spring grade requests!!

wish yall the best (:

@khmexcles did you check out their transfer planning guide? Maybe your “funkier” classes will fit the GE requirements. Also, you can see what will likely transfer https://camel2.usc.edu/articagrmt/artic_hist_range.aspx

@witcher3435 Wow, thanks so much! I didn’t realize they would have my school. I appreciate it, have a blessed night!

Does the fact that I fulfilled my university’s writing requirement through IB examination (which is not transferable to USC) affect my chances into Viterbi?..anyone?

@greenpotatoe if you haven’t satisfied the writing requirement for USC (usually 2 semesters of writing) then it could mean certain rejection, since the writing requirement is something that is required to attend the university as a transfer.

I got the email too.

So did I, probably not going to bother applying for it though because its usually designated for California residents and as @zettasyntax said, it even asks about certain community colleges… plus, I’ll probably end up getting the max amount of aid if I get in and if I were to get that scholarship, they’d just take away some need based aid to compensate

@penntousc aren’t they more flexible with applicants from four year universities?

@greenpotatoe honestly I’m not sure, I don’t think I’ve seen any applicants who met the requirement through a placement exam. The reason I say that could mean rejection is because basically anyone who is missing the math or writing requirements has been rejected. I’d recommend emailing your counselor at USC and asking about it, because I don’t think your situation is very common.

@penntousc yeah I basically fulfilled the writing requirement at my university by getting a 6 in IB English, so there would be no possible way for me to meet USC’s writing requirement even if I tried. I’ll just e-mail my counselor.

@greenpotatoe You should definitely email your counselor because none of us can give you the right answer for school specific requirments from 4 years. From CC’s generally AP’s/IB’s cover 1st semester of english at the CC and we need to take a 2nd semester of English to cover USC’s requirment. However, I’m sure 4 year insitutions are different.

How do they choose who gets spring admit? Is it mostly sophomores?

@itslife123 @penntousc this is what I found in their website: “IMPORTANT NOTE: We are more flexible with our writing requirement for transfer applicants coming from four year institutions. We understand that each four year university has its own general education requirements and not all institutions have courses equivalent to our writing requirement. The two semester writing requirement can be waived for admission purposes but it will have to be completed in order to earn a degree at USC.”

Should I still email my counselor?

@greenpotatoe I still would, better safe than sorry

Hi, I’d like to ask you some questions to you all about transferring to USC with a Business–Marketing major. I’ve taken 41 credit hours here at 4 year Uni, and 12 credits are in progress for this Spring 2017 semester. But the problem is Within that total of 53 credits, I’ve earned 29 credits of ESL classes, since I’m an international student. So basically I couldn’t earned much of credits from last semester which is 9 academic In addition to the 24 credit hours (excluding the ESL classes), I took the following classes.

Fall 2016
ENGLISH 105B Advance Spk Lstn Topics (ESL)
Math 110 College Algebra
MGT 100 Foundations of Business
CONSVTY 120N Music Appreciation (Online)

Spring 2017 (In progress)
CJC 101 Intro to Criminal Justice
POL-SCI 210 American Government
STAT 235 Elementary Statistics
CONSVTY 103N Fundamentals of Music (Online)

As you can see, I took two online classes. I was just wondering if those will count, as well. Are there any other classes that may not be transferred to USC?

For the next Semester, which is Fall 2017, I’m planning to take the following classes.

Fall 2017 (Next semester)
ANCHOR I
DISCOURSE I
MATH 206
ECON 201 (Online)
MIS 202

I know it’s a lot of questions. But I really appreciate you guys time and assistance.

I also received the e-mail regarding the Topping Scholarship. The moment I saw that in my inbox, I sprang up and immediately started completing it :))

I’m roughly 5% above the federal poverty guideline (optimism and hope are one’s best life rafts in times of trouble! <3) and recently immigrated to the U.S. Besides receiving Pell Grants/ SEOGs, I’m heavily active in my community(as I was in my former country of residence). It behooves me to complete the scholarship, at least to be considered.

@bravoyourlife Have you checked the transfer guidelines for your university? It should outline which classes are transferable or not. As for online classes, I think the best thing to do would be to email a counselor (even if you didn’t apply this year, they should still be able to answer!) because I’m not sure how online classes are counted.

@Skepta I think so. Seems like getting in as a sophomore is harder than applying as a junior (unless you have TTP)

@Shuisazn Thanks for your replying! Yes, I did check but since I live in MO, I couldn’t find them … Also, I emailed and called them but they said they can’t really tell me ;(
