2017 - 2018 USC Transfer

Disappointing day

@jonathaanv Is $18500 including rent and other things, or just what you need to cover for tuition?

@hchung0719 @Wafflepiezz and me :frowning: all my friends that I know already got into Marshall

@Wafflepiezz I’m still waiting too. I think the thing that might get me is the fact that I’ve only taken 23 units this year, including this semester. I’m in my third year of college and will finish all of the GEs this semester, and I’m currently working 40 hours a week, but I’m not sure if that’ll make up for the fact that I’m not a full time student. I’m starting to accept the idea of rejection.

@jae2017 my tuition and fees are completely covered. I got 54k in university, pell, cal, and another grant.

All the expenses are for housing, food, transportation etc. I literally got an identical package to what the NPC told me for 2014-2015 numbers which was when USC was $5000 cheaper to attend. The cost is going up every year so that’s not a good sign if the number didn’t change, but the tuition/COA did.

$18,500 for a 72K school is a good deal, but I have to sit down and weigh my options.

@izrobins @hchung0719 @uscdream19 I think we have similar stats and are applying as sophomores, right? Maybe most of sophomores didn’t get decisions yet? That’s what I hope at least #:-S

@jonathaanv Thanks for that data point, you’re awesome! I’m still waiting for my decision but I’m hoping USC will cover my tuition cause UCLA did. I don’t qualify for pell and cal though. I’m hoping for all university grant. Haha. :):

@izrobins @hchung0719 @Wafflepiezz well actually I’m a junior applicant 3.75 gpa with no sgr so I’m really confused why I haven’t heard back

@jae2017 np, UCLA gave me a good deal as well (under 10K) which is why I have to pick between the two. UCI is also in the mix at 8k so ehhhh.

Honestly I wouldn’t go into it expecting a free ride (you know this of course) @penntousc has a sweet deal that is the best I’ve ever seen on college confidential and he had a $0 EFC. If you’re in the same ball park, hit him up. If not, I wouldn’t get my hopes up to pay under 10K. Brace yourself in case you don’t get what you want.

@jonathaanv also remember that if Usc covered your tuition then the 18k is an estimate since you’re in charge of the food, rent, transportation. So your cost of living can be way lower than that.

@jonathaanv Yeah, USC is closer to my work which is why I’m considering it. Just not sure how much more I’m willing to pay. Good luck on your decisions!

@jonathaanv @jae2017 I was absolutely shocked, I figured I’d be paying around 13-14k out of pocket after work study at best. My mom was in school from 2013-16 though so she hadn’t made any money for the years reported, but she just recently got a job for 25k annual I think, so my aid will be similar to yours at around 18k (I think, idk for sure). However, I think the CSS only has to be completed once since there’s a fee, and that’s what causes USC to offer aid that differs from other schools, which basically means that unless there’s been a drastic change in income or something along those lines, the aid probably won’t vary much from year 1 to 2 or 3. Even at 18k, it’s a hell of a deal for such a good (and expensive) school so I know that no matter what my aid changes to I’ll be graduating from USC.

But obviously if you’re some high maintenance person that need to be somewhere fancy and eat out everyday especially in the downtown area then that cost would be way higher haha… I honestly think the estimates for housing, food, supplies, transportation is based of the rich kids of Usc which most of us here are not… man I could live off chicken and rice everyday lol

@pantafootball2 right lol I could give a ■■■■ less what I have to eat, and the apartment doesn’t need to be fancy or in an upscale area, just sanitary (aka no cockroaches or bed bugs). I found a great site to get books off of, www.bigwords.com – jot that down, I used it this past semester for my CC and saved hundreds, some pretty great rental deals. As for transportation, I’m just gonna buy a bike and ride that everywhere so I have no gas or car payments to make, or uber because that’s also very expensive after a trip or two.

@penntousc What did you get for finaid, if you don’t mind me asking? Not sure if you posted or I missed it. Thanks for sharing your experiences! I’m just scared hearing other people’s experiences about FinAid drastically changing the next year with no change in income. I see some people say the same on Reddit.

@Wafflepiezz junior applicant here! No sgr nothing :frowning:

@pantafootball2 #TopRamenSquad lol

@penntousc Nah I could give a fùck what my living conditions are if it means I can afford USC. I’d sleep in my car if I have to.

I’ll definitely keep all that in mind when choosing. It’s all on me now, no more waiting for portals to update. Ughhhh stress stress

@penntousc yeah I’m sure most USC students are not willing to make those type of sacrifices when they have debit cards from their parents.

@Wafflepiezz @uscdream19 i mean i understand why i didnt get a SGR because im a junior applicant but I am taking acctg 2 along with bio 3 and poli sci 7 which are prereqs and ge’s so… who knows :frowning:

So I think getting your tuition covered is good enough… the rest is dependent on on the student and how they’re willing to live.
