So I have a quick question for anyone who can help me! I received my SGR in the mail about a week ago, and I am currently wondering how long it might be before I get an answer. I have heard some students say that they haven’t gotten a decision until mid July! If that’s true, is there time to appeal if it’s a rejection letter?
@jae2017 Hi, there is no appeal letter under the submitted documents. Should I contact my advisor?
Question for admitted JUNIOR transfers and their transfer experience with USC. I’m not sure if I’m looking at the wrong thing but for steps leading up to orientation, it says to take a Math/Chem placement exam.
For Marshall applicants at least, USC says that we need Math 118 (Business Calc) OR Math 125 (Calc 1). What If we already took the Math 125 equivalent at our Community Colleges? Would we have to still take the placement exam and re-take the course at USC? I’m confused here…or would the Math course be waived at USC?
@pomeranian4rich @penntousc @zettasyntax
May you guys offer some insight to orientation and steps leading up to orientation? Any information will be appreciated!
I’m a freshman at UC San Diego applying for admission in Fall 2017 as a sophomore. In my first two quarters at UCSD, I’ve accumulated a 3.91 GPA while working and getting involved in a fraternity and several other orgs. I received a SGR (spring grades request) at the beginning of May, but given I am on the quarter system, my spring quarter is not over until June 16th and final grades won’t come out until June 25th or so. I had to call and let them know about the final grade delay and they said they would place me on a special status.
Is it safe to say that my admissions decision is depending a lot on my final quarter since they do not have a lot of college curriculum to base the decision off of?
If yes to the above question, is it also safe to say I probably won’t get a decision until mid-July?
I talked to a freshman admit regarding his financial aid, and he received a little bit more compared to me.
@kaylapak my family definitely falls under lower income for USC. income around 78k, received about 29k in aid. Not much when comparing it to ucla (usc’s tuition is more than double ucla’s) but I can’t reject marshall. Compared to the other private schools I was admitted to (ie: Santa Clara U), USC gives a similar amount of aid
I attend another private school right now in SoCal and if USC accepts me and gives me close or just as much financial aid, im going to USC. If they don’t give me much, ill stay put and graduate soon. I think thats why I’m not too worried about getting accepted or not.
I did get an SGR though. on monday, the 5th, my grades will be on my transcript so I can send them in.
@mersyno1 how ironic, he’s mine too since I also go to ELAC. I really thought I was the only one from that school who hasn’t heard back lol. yeah, I saw that as well and thought the worst, but then again he probably had a methodical way of selecting applicants. I just hope he makes decisions soon. I take it your portal still looks the same too?
@squirtlesquirtle I’m not an incoming junior but I know for a fact that those transferring into the business school don’t need to take the math placement. Calc 1 is as high as you can possibly place on it, and we’ve all already completed that equivalent prior to admission, so we’re good to go.
Do you think the admissions office underplays the importance of high school grades for a decision? I mean if u do well in both college and high school it gives no doubt about ur preparation for USC.
@greenpotatoe no they don’t matter at all as long as you have 30+ transferable units. I graduated high school with a 2.7 (never took an AP class), and was admitted with only 16 completed units and no SGR (had 16 in progress though).
@penntousc the thing is that what gets me to more than 30 units is my IB scores which also show up in my transcript (I did the IB Diploma). So they will probably look at my high school record right?
@greenpotatoe I’m pretty sure they evaluate IB scores the same way they evaluate AP scores, so in a sense they will look at what you did in high school, but they won’t consider your GPA or standardized test scores. For example, someone that’s completed a bunch of AP courses will have those units considered, but it can only help them, not hurt them (they won’t be scrutinized for scoring a 3 or less on an AP exam, it simply won’t count as college credit). So, you can’t be negatively impacted by anything you did in high school, only positively impacted, or not impacted at all.
@penntousc @greenpotatoe Well I have over 60 Units at a CC and am transferring from a 4 Year private school and they still asked for my HS Transcripts. When I asked why, they said they wanted to make sure I graduated lol really confusing but whatever. I couldn’t have gone to a 4 year if I didn’t graduate…
anyways, I did terrible in HS, complete joke of a student. Now I have a really high GPA and you can see the progression throughout my academic career and its an exponential curve.
I think some admissions officers want to see the growth or use the HS transcripts as some bar. Everyones admission counselor might be different.
@tankle104 yeah, they ask for high school transcripts from everybody as proof of graduation, no matter how many units. I feel that though lol I hated high school, I had no interest in any specific college and just didn’t care about any of it. Hard to understand why that was the case, being where I am now, but it is what it is. Regardless of whether or not you’re admitted, just having a presence on this thread shows an ambition that you (some others and myself included) have now that you didn’t have in high school, so you’ll be fine wherever you go. Best of luck!
@penntousc I have to agree with you. I moved away from the town I grew up in when I was 18, my old friends don’t even recognize me anymore. “wait you get straight A’s??” haha it is funny.
USC was always my dream for undergrad. hopefully I can get in! If USC gives me a great tuition package, im going! I need to get in first. Im anxious to see all my final grades that come out tomm!
@jae2017 I also sent my appeal last Tuesday, but nothing has been added to the received documents section… how long did it take for it to be reflected on your portal?
@squirtlesquirtle I was under the impression that the math placement test was a formality. Like they want to ensure that even if you took the equivalent of calc/business calc, that you actually test into calc level. However, as @penntousc says, it doesn’t seem to be necessary. They certainly wouldn’t make you repeat a calc. I think it’s really for students that wish to take more advanced courses in mathematics.
I had an absolute blast during orientation. Although, my orientation was for spring admits, so it’s likely different in structure than the summer orientations. If you have any specific questions about orientation, I’m always happy to try and help out.
Does anyone know when will be the deadline of appeals?
@zettasyntax I’ve got a question actually, would you recommend that I schedule a regular walking tour the day after orientation, or is the one during orientation detailed enough? I’ll be in LA the following day before I go back up to Visalia, and I’d like to get as much out of the visit as possible
@penntousc Ah I see. I was worried that I would have to repeat Calc 1 upon entering Marshall. With this in mind, I am under a different circumstance (I guess). My first semester of community college wasn’t the best. I failed Calc 1 with a D however, a few semesters down the road I retook Calc 1 and passed with an A. I know USC doesn’t honor other campus’s academic renewal policy, but would this class still transfer over into credits despite the repeat? Its just the transfer GPA that will be affected correct?
@zettasyntax I’m a spring admit too for 2018! I haven’t SIR’d for USC yet, I will soon after financial aid package comes in. By the time I transfer, I’ll have 64 units with 6/8 GE’s completed and all Marshall requirements completed. I just don’t want to be surprised with a course repetition since most of these classes I’ve taken at least a year ago.
