@CADREAMIN you think well hear anything this weekend? or no more decisions until tuesday?
@goodBrujo9 Some people find my stuttering cute, lol. Others don’t
I’m going for my masters in computational linguistics at the University of Washington. I definitely would have considered USC, but they don’t have a masters program for my major; only a PhD. The department typically accepts 6-10 students per year, so I didn’t like my odds. I also overheard my syntax professor say that UW is currently a stronger school for comp ling than USC, so if it got her recommendation, I’m assuming the program must be pretty solid
I figure having a graduate degree and getting some more research experience will up my odds for the PhD program if that’s something I want to try in the future.
anyone know how soon after sending spring grades u get a decision (SGR)
ADMITTED HOLY ****. SECOND CHOICE DORNSIFE SOCIOLOGY.
FALL 2018. LETTER DATED MAY 25TH.
GPA: 3.345 Upwards trend
Transferring as: Junior hopefully
From: Private Norcal Uni
EC’s: Nothing notable other than running an online store for the past few years with $20K+ profits.
Recs: One from comm professor, one from sociology professor. Did very well in both classes and frequently talked outside of class.
Essays: Pretty strong, worked on them for a very long time. Had a friend who used to be the president of our high school NEHS to look over them as well as my older brother.
Comments: Extremely thankful and happy. I know my GPA is quite a lot lower from the average, but it just shows that they do look at apps holistically. I started off college with a 2.67 quarter and the most recent quarter I had a 3.85. I believe my essays were very crucial to this decision because I wrote about very unique topics while referencing specific USC courses/research programs. Also, I threw in a little humor in my “interests outside your academic focus” essay as well as the quick take short answers (response to "next tv show to binge I said “Game of Thrones. Yup, seven seasons in and I still haven’t hopped on the bandwagon.” lol) I do want to note that I had one of my closest friend’s dad, who graduated from Annenberg and used to be on the Annenberg board to help me put in a “good word.” I don’t know how much influence that may have had since “connections” nowadays don’t mean too much. I want to wish those that are still waiting the very best of luck and don’t lose hope if some of you guys don’t have the best grades, I am an example that shows they’re not everything.
@gearsekandou Congratulations!!
@aznboi4981 Thank you!! I wish you the best of luck with your appeal, I know how bad you wanted it.
@CADREAMIN what would be extraordinary for an appeal?
Welp, I submitted my appeal! All I can ask from you all is to send TONS of luck my way.
I thank you all for being so supportive throughout this entire process. I am so happy to see all of you accepted students so thrilled! You all deserve it. And to those of you who have been rejected like myself, keep your head held high, and fight on!
I am barely going to be on CC since I need a break, but I wish all of you still waiting to hear back LOTS of luck. Stay positive.
And @CADREAMIN: Please ignore every new message I sent to you today since I submitted my appeal. Needed it off my head before the weekend.
Thanks for all of your help.
Have Annenberg applicants NOT heard back yet? I feel like I’m the only one now
@giakhanhngo123 I’m still waiting :((
@gearsekandou omg congrats!! I’m so happy for you! Your binge watching answer made me laugh. Mine was: Big Little Lies. Didn’t care until they announced Meryl Streep is joining season 2. I love her.
Lol we will probably have classes together in Annenberg. Congrats again!
I got a SGR on May 18th and sent my grades in yesterday and found out today I got rejected.
Is it normal to hear back that quickly?
@zettasyntax had to google what comp linguini is lol. After doing some reading it sound like you about to be paaaiidd. heeyyy big head… lol
When do u head up to UW?
When people got their SGRs how long did it take for it to come in the mail after the online decision?
has anyone received their financial aid award letter yet? i was accepted on 5/22 and im still waiting to see how much i get before i commit lol its the deciding factor if i go there or not
@bna2017 You heard in one day? I’ve heard of three days and more recently two days, but hearing in one day sounds extremely fast. It does seem rather rare. I’m sorry it was bad news
It took me around two weeks to hear back after getting an SGR back in 2014 and it was also a rejection. One day really seems crazy. I wouldn’t even think that they would have time to process your transcript let alone look at it in that time.
@goodBrujo9 There were only about 60-70 linguistics majors while I was at USC, so I’m always happy if people actually know what my major is lol. I was the only comp ling graduate in 2017 as well. One of the other linguistics graduates kept staring at my sash during commencement and she didn’t even know my major existed
Classes start late September! It’s going to be weird switching to the quarter system after all this time.
@goodBrujo9 Haha that’s good. I’m not sure if I will try to switch to Annenberg yet since I am fine with studying comm or sociology. I have taken many classes in both majors at my current school, so we’ll see if the sociology classes at SC are interesting.
@4yourhope oh thank goodness I’m not the only one. I’m debating calling on Tuesday just because we have to committ soon and I need to look into living arrangements.
Also, I’ve technically already been accepted to the university and I lowkey feel like they forgot about me or something LOL
@bna2017 what major did you apply for if you don’t mind me asking? I got an sgr on the same date
@aznboi4981 I wish the best of luck to you and hoping for a successful appeal!
Wow that early to receive a rejection after an SGR. @bna2017 what are you stats? Major? Where you’re coming from? Please let us know!
