2018 - 2019 USC Transfer

@sagerheinschild When did you submit your housing app? That might be helpful for people to know.

@CADREAMIN Do you know how decisions are made? I was wondering if it’s a single person who gets a stack of apps from some area or if they pass the apps around for stamps of approval, etc.

@sagerheinschild yeah I’d like to know HOW you got housing at the village?! are you an incoming sophomore or junior, when did you submit the housing app, and any tips for the housing app???

@sagerheinschild omg NICEEE!! i applied for housing in april and havent heard back yet :frowning:

@sagerheinschild Whoa, wait a minute…just yesterday you asked

and on the 26th also asked how to sign up. Are you confused in that you filled out the housing app and put the Village as a first choice or something? Which doesn’t mean anything btw…or are you just playing with people?

The do not turn around assignments in a day, ever. Many transfers won’t hear until July even if accepted in April or early May.

Ugh, I just checked my FAST and today they updated it, but it says my FAFSA was chosen for verification. It says they can’t process my financial aid until they have another tax document. The only way for my mom to get this document is through the mail, and it takes 5-10 days. Am I going to possibly miss out on financial aid because of this delay? I was admitted on the 24th.

@scarletred Typically, the counselors are one of the people doing the initial screen and making sure app is complete, may (not always) do first read and give their initial impression as do others. Note, there are usual multiple individual reads, not just your counselor. Of course your counselor can advocate for you, and this can be very important, but they are in no way a lone wolf in the process. App has to be reviewed by admissions, the school of your major, and the department. Apps may be compared with others as a group. Of course if so many individual reads and the school’s opinions line up on the same page, the committee discussion can be minimal if at all. Other times, it comes down to a committee discussion/vote, so it is technically out of your counselor’s hand by the time a decision comes down and the packet is ready to go, so them being in town or not is unimportant. Of course they track the students in their area and can have a lot to say, but it is a group decision, not an individual one.

@CADREAMIN connections my friend… not messing with people lol who does that

@EDodgeCayman Can’t you fax or send it through email? FedEx offers business services like scanning, printing, computer use, etc., for prices that aren’t too unreasonable (if you don’t have the stuff at home). Unless you mean the IRS tax transcript, but the FA office understands it takes time to get this and you’re not going to get disqualified for something that is out your hands. e.g., my current 4-year university gives a soft deadline for the tax transcript to get your aid disbursed in time for the school year, but it’s usually in like august, and if you miss it for some reason, you can still turn in till october (but you’d have to cover tuition till then and get a reimbursement). I’m sure USC is the same.

I’ve gotten selected for verification twice now. It’s a pain in the butt. You can get your tax transcript online if you have a credit card, mortgage payment, or car payment the IRS can verify, too.

@scarletred the document that the financial aid office wants is some weird tax receipt that you have to get from the IRS, and it had to be mailed  that’s whats going to take 5-10 days

Ha @sagerheinschild, have you been on cc much? Plenty of people do, it’s a pool of misinformation at times. So you are saying you didn’t know how to apply yesterday, but have a housing assignment today…let’s say you had a magical unicorn connection, why would you post about it, if not to mess with people?

@EDodgeCayman Won’t affect the aid, just the timing of it.

I have a question concerning the graduation requirements / transfer credit. Most of USC’s classes are 4 credits. Will my 3 credit classes transfer to USC’s 4 credit classes? So if I took Psychology for 3 credits, will it be worth 4 credits at USC?

You can lookup how courses from your university have transferred to USC in the past on their website, but I don’t think so, vincent. Your course needs to cover the same topics, be in the same department, and have the same number of credits or more (i.e., if your course is 4 credits and USC’s is 3 credits they will allow it to transfer and give you 3 credits, but not vice-versa)

@Vincent1997 Does your university have an articulation agreement?

@CADREAMIN Yeah we do, but not all classes are shown. Also, it shows that the classes transfer, but not into what specific course. Since all of them seem to be 4 credits, I guess it’s safe to assume that they will be 4 credits?

@scarletred I can’t imagine that being the case, because USC literally makes every course 4 credits, which is unusual. The majority of transfers are coming in with 3 credits classes. Not getting credit for any of those seems unrealistic.

Anybody have advice on the appeal process?

@Vincent1997

“Most students may transfer in a maximum of 64 semester units. (Architecture majors and Engineering “3-2” students have different limits).
Transferable courses are granted the number of semester units indicated on the transfer transcript, even if a USC equivalent course receives a different number of units.
Units at a quarter school are converted to semester units by dividing them by 1.5.”

@Vincent1997 I jotted down an email to Articulation Office. They said that each course will be transferred the way it is shown on the official transcript, though, up to the credit hours value the course has at USC.

As far as housing, I have submitted my application around May 7th and I haven’t heard back yet. I’m also OOS and I can’t imagine looking for any off-campus housing from Chicago.

Does anyone have any advice on a financial aid appeal? I would pay close to double at USC (~17k) than what I pay now commuting from home to a college in Chicago. This makes it hard to win my parents over to move across the country, and is basically the deciding factor in my decision. I got into Marshall last week.
