anyone know if this is an unusual amount of (great) schools going to their waitlist? Or does this happen every year?
Re #28: Since the chances of enrolling the intended class size on the first attempt fall at essentially zero, it would seem that those colleges that do not accept from their waitlists may have mismanaged their admissions (by nearly inevitably over-enrolling their classes).
So why keep this list, then, if most schools will go to their waitlist?
To let people know when certain schools have started pulling from the waitlist. In other words, if you haven’t heard from a school that is not on the list, you can feel a bit more comfortable, as no one has reported that they have heard from that particular school.
It is also helpful to know when a school goes to its WL, so applicants can follow up with the school right away. I found out my kid’s school was going to its WL on CC, so I had her GC call the school right away, that same day D1 got off the WL.
@homerdog I suspect that there are a number of good reasons to keep this list.
If a school goes to waitlist very, very early, it means that they overestimated their yield or didn’t get enough applications and their admit rate is likely to go up.
Not all schools are going to waitlist. UVA said that they are going to be very limited on WL this year, so their admit rate will probably go down next year. This is valuable information to know if you have a kid who wants to apply to UVA next year.
If a kid is on waitlist at one or more schools, knowing that others are beginning to come off of the waitlist gives them an indication of whether they have a chance.
My kid is applying to schools next year. I am selfishly hoping that his preferred schools show up on the waitlist list early this year, so that they might bump up their EA/ED admittance percentage next year and increase my kid’s chance of getting in.
This is a bit of tea leaf reading and schools can make different decisions based on the same input information. But on the whole, knowing that we saw, for example, Vanderbilt accepting off of the waitlist on May 4th this year tells us that they may give some extra love to ED applications next December.
It seemed like a lot of schools had higher than expected yields last year, over enrolled, and had to have students triple up in dorms. Perhaps this year they were more cautious about admissions numbers.
It’s VERY unlikely Bates will go to the WL this year. They’ve offered an extension on the deadline to notify of deferral.
Cornell said they admitted few students this year, so colleges within Cornell are going to its WL. I am sure it is hard to find that balance.

In general, the smaller schools tend to be more conservative with RD because they have a harder time finding rooms/beds if they over-enroll. So small schools don’t mind having to make limited use of the wl, because they can then get better control on size of the class. Actually Bates was one of the schools who mentioned this at an info session, but seems like this year, their yield must have been higher than expected
Adding Caltech. Someone reported on the thread for that that they know someone who just got admitted from the waitlist. Typically it will be a small number, since the freshman class size is 235-245. Agree with @wisteria100 on use of WL by smaller schools.
