2019-2020 USC Transfer

@Prlewis9 If Marshall was your first choice, yeah, I’d say it is almost all but certain that Marshall is out of the running :disappointed: It’s such a crucial course; it’s the one thing I don’t believe they’d overlook. If you’ve otherwise satisfied your minimum math requirement, you’ll definitely be considered for your second choice major. I was admitted for my second choice major. I for sure thought I’d get in for my first choice (also in Dornsife), so I was pretty surprised that they admitted me for my second choice.

ughhhhh I go to a school with quarter system and my spring grades won’t be out until the beginning of July. Do they ask for Spring grades or just winter grades for quarter system school? (I haven’t gotten anything yet but I have uploaded my winter grades on the portal. They haven’t checked it yet)

@zettasyntax People missing Business Calculus for Marshall scares me a little lol because I am missing the first writing class.

However, we talked about this earlier that USC is more lenient on the writing requirement.

@zettasyntax Here are some quotes regarding what my USC counselor told me last June when I first reached out to him.

  1. All of your work looks academic in nature. I would recommend you complete ENGL 306 if possible since it will meet our lower division writing requirement.

  2. If you don’t have access to ENGL 306, I would take a different class that relates to another general education category. ENGL 101 at Pepperdine will not equate to our lower division writing class, so you will have to complete that lower level composition class and a midlevel composition class at USC in order to graduate.

According to him, I can take the first english class at USC.

I should be fine right?

I have a 3.91 GPA and got a spring grade request today. I also have all my prerequisites completed. It’s definitely a love/hate relationship with USC at the moment lol

wait what is the business calculus course Marshall requires? Isn’t it just Calculus?

Calc I or Business Calc. Calc I is actually considered the harder course, so if you have done that you are fine.

@zettasyntax so your second choice was in the same school as your first…I think that makes a big difference and looked how it all worked out! Second choices at other schools presents a bigger challenge. Hope you are enjoying all that green up there!

So if you got a 5 on AP Calc AB and a 5 on AP Calc BC then you are good??

@CADREAMIN I thought Calculus 1 is harder than Business Calculus. I applied to UCLA and UCB and they need Calculus 1 but not Business Calculus.

Business Calculus covers business applications such as revenue and cost and Calculus 1 goes more in depth in derivatives and integrals so it’s slightly harder.

But I believe that a person who succeeds in Business Calculus will also do well in Calculus 1.

Just got a spring grade request after checking portal at 4:30 pm.

Sophomore applicant non ttp
4.0 fall semester and probably a 4.0 for spring too.

@GotYa55 If possible, can you copy and paste what it said on your portal?

I am curious what the statement is like on USC portal when they send you an SGR.

@sagaciousforever Yeah, I’ve always thought they were strict on the writing requirement, but I recall a lot of past applicants on here that don’t actually complete it or are able to take it over the summer or something. I’ve never really heard of that happening for a math requirement, so yup, USC does seem flexible as far as writing. That’s pretty much what your counselor seemed to echo, so I’d say you’re fine

@CADREAMIN Yup, both Dornsife majors. I applied for anthro (first) and sociology (second). I was terrified to apply as a linguistics major since there’s not really a whole lot of requirements one can complete at the CC level, so I figured anthro was a good choice since I had about five anthro courses (and one was even called linguistic anthropology) and anthro seemed like the closest-related field. I am glad things worked out in the end. Even if I did find it a bit random for them to admit me as a sociology major when I took no additional sociology courses since the year they rejected me.

@sagaciousforever That’s what I said, we are saying same thing.

@GotYa55 I got one as well. It just shows a spring graded request under Application Check List with a red X next to it.

i have a 3.89 GPA applying for marshall as a junior and got spring grade requested yesterday.
I have gotten an A in both Econ classes and an A in both accounting classes and an A in the writing requirement, along with having almost all categories completed after this semester except the political science one. I am taking Calc 1 currently and i think that is why i got spring requested but I am scared of getting a B in that class ( Im getting A’s in my other classes). How are my chances looking???

@sagaciousforever I didn’t receive an email asking for a SGR, though. I was just checking my portal and then my checklist changed. Basically, there’s an x next to spring grades. Everything else is still the same.

@zettasyntax Sociology is my second choice major as well! If you don’t mind me asking, what was your GPA when they admitted you for it?

Yea pretty much the same for me also. I got A’s in Calc 1, in both Econ classes, both Accounting classes, and in the writing requirement. I have a 3.91 GPA applying to Marshall as a Junior. Love hate relationship with USC at the moment.

@bballboy98 hey I am in the same similar position as you I’m taking business calc rn and have gotten A’s in all my other courses Econ and accounting and writing and my GE’s and have 70 units done and I’m taking 12 units right now. I haven’t gotten a SGR yet so I do wonder what will happen. I have a good upward trend though cause I didn’t start as well when I started college.
