I applied to Viterbi and haven’t received SGR or anything yet. Is this a bad sign?
:’( Ugh
@Doodlesack I was responding to another post saying that legacy only get descions and I told them that wasnt the case for, first being they turned me down freshman year and said to go to community college & fyi my Grandfather does not teach there anymore as he passed away and I am actually black I got the diversity and you are right it dosent matter. I was responding to someone else saying that they only give legacy descions first which is not true that all you are correct it does not matter. Good Luck to you!
@hosc21
I am so sorry you werent accepted? Does received a SGR (does that mean spring grade request)?
@bellevue34 You are mixing USC up with another school(s) in terms of plans for fall. They have not announced their plans and specifically said they would release them in June. They are hoping to have some in person classes as many schools are, but we will know more in June. Go to the USC Covid site for the latest info and updates.
It is not all over the news - that is the CSU system (letters are backwards from USC).
@soyyaaa0312 I’m in the same position. Applied to Viterbi for aerospace engineering (4.0, 64 credits) and haven’t heard anything back yet.
Many many applicants are accepted or rejected without getting an SGR.
so people have gotten rejected? and if so, what was their major?
Has anyone heard from Dornsife yet?
I’m from a quarter school and I previously got a WGR. On the 15th, I got a SGR but my school doesn’t end until June 22. Do I just wait until then to turn in my transcript? If it helps, I’m a Viterbi CS applicant.
@karahng The financial aid package came out about a week after receiving acceptance notice.
Because they can handle it how they want to. Supply demand. I have not seen them claim “they don’t sit on decisions.” It’s posted everywhere that by May 31st applicants get an SGR, decision or rejection. It has been this very same way for decades. Yes, decades.
One will find with many things in life, if in the rejection pile/losing side rather than the acceptance pile/winning side, it matters way less to “them” how you are treated. Schools don’t have to be nice or considerate to those rejected, they don’t need to. Not saying it’s right, but just how it is. It’s just the nature of business and many competitive endeavors.
That makes sense. The only reason I was aking was that over the phone I was told by an admissions counselor that they don’t sit on application decisions and once they are made they are posted. Let’s hope for a big wave this week guys!!
@jdambrosi Aha, light bulb moment here…that actually is true after May 31st - I bet that’s where the confusion is!
After the 31st, once you send in your SGR (you late folks with mid June dates for grades) they will send a decision within a day or two, and sometimes even a few hours after you send them in!
@soyyaaa0312 @tfisgoingonUSC I’m also Viterbi. I’m doing aerospace engineering. I have a 3.8 with 64 units. I received an SGR last Friday. I had mentioned this earlier on page 99 of the forum
For SGRs:
It is not a waitlist. It just means they are curious to see how you do this semester/quarter.
Submit FINAL grades. They are well aware colleges are on different time schedules. If you think your institution in particular deviates from the norm significantly (i.e. late June) then email your regional counselor and ask them for their thoughts.
Do not feel discouraged if you have not received an SGR. It is a misconception that SGR’s are tipping points for applicants and that if you get one and do well, you are guaranteed admission. This is not true. More times than not, an SGR is issued because you may not have completed enough courses to demonstrate academic success at a collegiate level or your current semester has a filter course. This is something like Calculus 2, Electromagnetism, or Anatomy. Filter courses are essential courses to your major that often are very difficult and are decent indicators of how you will perform in your higher division courses. Hence, these courses cause a lot of students to switch majors or rethink their academic pathway. Universities like to see the outcome of these courses to feel confidence in your academic ability and passion for your major.
I want to reiterate that even if you do well and pull a 4.0, it does not guarantee admission and those who have not received an SGR should not be discouraged.
To make myself as an example, my first year at my JC I was studying computer science so when I switched this past fall, I began some pretty critical course. This Spring I am taking classical mechanics which is a make or break for engineering majors. I likely received an SGR as to see how I did in this course. However, it does not guarantee my admission, it just makes their decision more fair.
You two may have enough under your belts that would allow them to make a fair decision already. Don’t be discouraged about the calendar. Only about 100 people have been admitted with only a handful in Viterbi.
Hope this essay helps LOL.
Hang in there!
@BobaTaroTea You wait until you receive your grades for the Spring Quarter and send them. They want the transcripts for Spring by July 1st. So as long as you send ASAP to USC when you get your spring quarter grades, it will be fine. That just means you most likely wont get a decision until beginning of July
@AE2020 Do you or anyone else know if they can make SGR decisions with an unofficial transcript? Do they require an official transcript to make a final SGR decision?
@soyyaaa0312 Don’t worry, I’m in the same boat as you! Applied to Viterbi (4.0, 34 credits) and no response yet. Keep your hope up
That being said, given that my spring grades include a requirement to Viterbi CS (Calculus 2), is it bad that I have not received a SGR? I mean, they literally cannot admit me without seeing my spring grades according to their major reqs. I know there are still two weeks, but I feel like it’s basically game over if I haven’t heard anything by next Monday…
I haven’t received an SGR, but my spring grades are pretty much finalized since I’m on a semester system; could I just send my transcript anyways? I’m conflicted because I feel like my spring grades would really help my chances but I don’t know if I should keep waiting for a SGR
@yeetygod send them! if you send them now there’s no reason for them to send you an SGR by the 31st. instead you’ll (most likely) receive a decision by then
