2020-2021 USC Transfer

how bad is it that I switched to pass fail for 3 of my 5 classes?? I had straight As for my midterm report, but switched to pass fail due to issues with taking classes at home.

Do you guys think they will accept people specifically to start online?

@CADREAMIN What was your USC experience like? I got into other top schools which are both perceived as better programs for my major/s. Though I have heard a lot of great things about the USC experience not only during school but also post-grad how much it helps in the job market. Especially since USC is local so I probably would not have to move.

@jdambrosi i was thinking about that too, but i think they’d only do that if they announce that they’re doing a “hybrid” fall semester, like partially online and partially in person. it’d be their way of telling those admitted to start online “if you start online now, you’ll get to come to campus someday”. they’re definitely going to have to limit how many students come back to campus, if any are allowed back, so i think it’s a possibility. they’re more likely to just accept people for spring though, since things will probably be closer to normal by then. i doubt usc will make a decision about the fall semester until june though, so im not sure.

@av0cado7 i’ve seen a lot of people in this thread super worried about taking classes pass/fail and really overthinking/scrutinizing it, but i think a lot of us are forgetting that colleges, like their students, have never been in this situation before either. usc even offered the pass/fail option to their own students. schools are being so lenient right now, and yes, usc is an elite school that’s difficult to get into, but they’re not blind to the difficulties that online school poses for some people. if you’re really worried about it, call your admissions counselor and explain, if it’s something that you couldn’t help that prompted you to pass/fail the courses (poor internet access, financial difficulties, etc.). if it was a professor or TA issue, i wouldn’t call, because it may sound like you’re making an excuse (even though professor and TA problems are 100% out of your control sometimes). however, i think schools are being way more understanding this year than we think, and i don’t think pass/fails are as huge a deal as we all think. don’t worry about it too much; none of us expected any of this to happen, so let’s not beat ourselves up for giving ourselves a little break by pass/failing some courses. not burning out or going crazy (especially over things we can’t change) is always more important than getting into a school, even though it doesn’t feel that way sometimes.

I know it’s a total long shot since we haven’t even seen any decisions except one in the past few weeks but is there any chance they would roll out decisions throughout the week or is it exclusively on Friday’s? I have to deposit at another school and I’m wondering if there’s any point in waiting to deposit because I don’t have till even this Friday to wait and see what happens with USC potentially before I deposit.

How bad do you guys think getting a B this semester in a non major course be? I’m a psych major and I am possibly getting a B in bio psych, which isn’t transferable nor required for my major (I would have to take it at USC) due to circumstances out of my control (not to sound whiny but my prof is the most disorganized I’ve ever seen and forgets to upload the midterms until a week later and things like that). There’s a possibility of an A but seeing how things are going I think it’s not happening and i got a SGR. Even if it isn’t required for my major but is related to my major does anyone have any advice as to how they maybe might take this? I’m worried that since this is the first B since freshman quarter (i’m a third year) that they’ll take this as a bad sign and immediately reject me

They do make decisions based off of unofficial transcripts, if you have a SGR and want them to see your grades asap, then just take a screenshot and upload it to your portal. That is perfectly acceptable, although if you are accepted you will eventually need to send the official transcript.

@sleeplessincali a B isn’t bad at all. not sure if this information is of any help, but usc admissions counselors have been telling people that a B is the cutoff for taking classes pass/fail. in other words, a B looks better on the transcript than a pass/fail grade and is still acceptable to see on a transcript. in my opinion, since it’s not a required course and this is your first B in a while (which is amazing by the way!!), i wouldn’t worry too much about it. sorry about the prof… my developmental psych prof was so disorganized, inconsistent with exam content, and unavailable for help after we switched online that i had to take the class pass/fail or risk getting a C+ even though i worked insanely hard, so i 100% know where you’re coming from. good luck and i hope i helped a little

@collegeappusc This year is so funky, who knows what days they will actually come out. With that being said, I will normally pay a lot of attention to my email/ portal on Wednesday’s and Friday’s around 5pm.

@jdambrosi I’m understanding your question as-- how likely do you think it is that USC will accept people with the caveat that their entire education at USC be online, which I think is almost 0% and is insanely unlikely.

If you are asking how likely it is that people who are accepted start their USC education all online, I think there is almost a 100% chance of that but the expectation be that they go back to normal in-person classes ASAP.

This is all conjecture of course, so I have no idea. I know that I wouldn’t attend USC if they told me I could only attend online through the entirety of my degree.

I think you might have asked this before but maybe I didn’t respond. I cannot imagine that would detract from your application. If they don’t ask for a SGR then your grades this semester weren’t part of their decision making process anyways.

Every acceptance is contingent upon getting good grades this semester (of course) and one B would still fall well within that standard. I’ll probably end up with a B in one of my courses as well but in my mind, idc. That singular B doesn’t represent anything about me. If USC was so borderline with my application that the B was the tipping point, then it wasn’t really the B was it?

@collegeappusc I’d say maybe even today, Monday. A handful of the already admitted found out on a Monday or Wednesday. Mine was on a Monday at 5:15 pm via email status update!

@seabee91 gonna keep my fingers as crossed as possible all day lol really cannot afford to lose the deposit money at this point

Has anyone been accepted for Price RED ?

How does it look if I made a class P/NP? It’s not a major requirement or anything. I took it for Berkeley but they rejected me so will it look bad on my transcript? I’m applying as Business Admin and Stats 101 isn’t required, which is the class I made P/NP. My professor hasn’t been posting our grades, so I don’t know my status in the class so instead of getting a B I made it P/NP. What do you think? @CADREAMIN

Does anyone have experience with this or have heard anyone in the same position?

@Kozzie, @NonTradtional, @ON5000 @NavyGuy2019

Looks like we are the applicant pool. Would it not be likely for them to accept us 5 students into the program ? The inception of the major in 2015 had 80 people and I am positive it has grown in size by then, doesn’t seem far fetched to give admission to 5.

@millerman63 I sure hope so, but I think it is important to recognize that there are many more applicants. We are the only ones that are active on this thread but I know just from my community college at Santa Monica College that there at least 10 people applying with the RED major as their first choice, and the majority of them are qualified applicants as well. Nevertheless, I am trying to keep a positive attitude so I am truly optimistic and enthusiastic about getting an acceptance letter within the next week or so. I hope we can all be taking classes together under the RED major soon!

@millerman63 I know there are two admitted, so far in the fb group, for Real Estate Development. Not sure if many of those on the fb group are on this thread tbh, so I’m sure there are more outside who aren’t on cc.

@mlplover69 I’m like 90% sure unofficial is okay however I would ask your admissions counselor to make sure.
