2020-2021 USC Transfer

@mill213 I got accepted today, but I didn’t receive a financial aid package yet. Makes sense, I understand it takes time. Just weighing out the options and I was considering the cost comparison that USC will provide to me in comparison to the Net Price Calculator that is accessible online.

@zettasyntax Long time to see!

I haven’t checked this thread for so long and I hope that you are well during this pandemic.

As for me, I enjoyed USC a lot and made some valuable friends. I finished my spring semester last week and got 2 "A"s, 1 “B+”, and 1 “W”. For that “W”, I dropped that class (Marketing) earlier the semester because I calculated that I could possibly end up with a “B” or “B-”, but I was told the “pass no pass” policy two weeks after I withdrew : (

So now, I have a GPA of 3.76 this semester. Considering that I am a rising junior and I will rely heavily on a quality internship next summer, do you recommend me to change that “B+” to a “P”? That will ensure that I have a “4.0” this semester. I am currently taking two summer classes at USC, so these summer grades will impact my grades too, but I really want to get a 3.85 or higher to have the best shot for internship applications (Big 4). Most big companies recruit in the Fall, so my Spring 2020 and Summer 2020’s grades will be the only academic records that I can show them when I apply next semester.

This summer, I will aim for 1 “A” and 1 “A-” (WRIT 150) or 2 "A"s, so the change to my GPA just by switching “B+” to “P” can be significant.

I asked @CADREAMIN about this too but I would like to hear your opinion too.

For those who don’t know: I am a transfer applicant last year and got into USC for Spring 2020. Feel free to ask me any questions should you have. Good luck!

Accepted into USC! Thanks so much @CADREAMIN for all thy words of wisdom all through the years for everyone on here. I would call you the Patron Saint of SC Admissions, but that would be a little weird  .

accepted into SCA film production! congrats to everyone else who go in too!

@yeayea8 I got accepted from an out of state (New York) 4 year university today. Though I live in California, if that changes things.

Accepted to Viterbi - Aerospace Engineering
4.0 GPA, 64 credits
Sophomore Transfer from CC in MD
No SGR
Non-TTP

Does anyone know how likely it is to switch schools at USC as a transfer student?

also here are my stats in case people are curious:

Accepted- Dornsife Psychology
Junior Transfer
CCC
GPA: 3.718 (on the app)
Letter of Rec: 1
Non-TTP
No SGR/WGR

@sagaciousforever Hey, you did substantially better than I did my first semester at 'SC. My GPA was on the lower end; just barely above 3.0 (I did really average in my CS classes). I think CADREAMIN made a great point before. The pass might be a little ambiguous. People that look at your grades could assume you got a C-. Your GPA is already quite solid. I would say to go for the pass if it isn’t related to your major, but honestly a B+ is nothing to be ashamed of. I wish I had more of those my first semester. I think you’ll be fine either way since this was such a hard semester for everyone, but I hope the summer semester will treat you better.

@uwseej Most schools follow a similar process. Take certain classes. Get around a 3.0 average. You usually get in. What school were you trying to switch into?

@heyigotnoclue omg that sucks :frowning: I really hope that gets sorted out! I’m actually all the way in the east coast lol! I used to go to a really nice LAC in Pennsylvania, but I went to a community college this year instead for family/academic reasons. Lets hope USC is willing to take someone like me :’)

@uwseej Depends on which school you want to switch into.

Different majors have different prerequisites that you need to complete before switching. Also, you will need to finish some classes and get a good GPA for switching into popular majors such as Business and CS.

For example, Internal transfer to USC Marshall would require you to complete a writing class, a calculus class, and a microeconomics class before switching.

@zettasyntax Thanks a lot for your input!

The class that I am considering to switch from “B+” to “P” is BUAD 302 (Business Communication). I am a Marshall student so this is my major class : (

Also, CS is just so much harder so we shouldn’t compare our GPA for our first semester at USC. On that note, I added a minor in Applied Analytics this semester and will require me to learn some coding classes (Python, which is what I am learning now)! On top of BUAD, GE, and Writing classes, I have to take 5 ITP classes.

And yes, I will learn a lot in the summer and I think I should stop caring about grades too much!

So a bigger wave coming tomorrow with both acceptances and rejections?? It seems like nobody got rejected today.

@zettasyntax so basically, your cost of attendance remained the same for all of your years at USC? Did they cover any housing costs?

Accepted into Viterbi CS!
Coming from a CSU with a 3.98 GPA. No SGR at all.

Does anyone know when/if we’ll get notified if we get a merit scholarship? Would it be the same time of notification as regular financial aid? I don’t qualify for financial aid at all so I was hoping for a scholarship to ease the costs and make my decision easier.

I got accepted on 4/15 to Marshall from the first wave.

Financial Aid Summary came 5 days after acceptance, but I appealed and was able to get a revised summary with more aid on 5/1.

Like was said before, STARS Report came about 2-3 weeks later in early May, but was revised to report AP Credit just a couple of days ago.

Congrats to all who were accepted today! Let me know if you have any questions about this process. Excited to join the trojan family, Fight On!

@moungl Hey congratulations!! I’m an English major too!! PM me if you want

Did anyone get anything for Marshall yet? I haven’t gotten anything.

@sagaciousforever Ah yeah, if it’s a Marshall class, I would personally keep the grade. I would only go for the pass if the grade was actually below average (like the C+ I got in CSCI 103). Oooh, that sounds like a great minor and should definitely help you out. Have fun with the Python courses. One of my favorite CS classes was cross-listed as an ITP class. It was probably my favorite coding class at USC. The instructor and TAs were so nice. And yeah, getting good grades is definitely important, but it shouldn’t be everything. I really thought I had no chance at making it grad school, but that still happened. I even thought it was a joke because my acceptance happened on April 1st, haha.

@bean01262020 Yup, my aid was consistent in that my tuition was always fully covered. I had a small surplus, but it wasn’t enough to cover housing at all. I also needed to pay for their student medical insurance as I was uninsured. I had no idea if my Medi-Cal would have worked, but I somewhat doubt it would have. I tried to appeal, but I was told that I had basically maxed out on grant aid. I had some pretty interesting documentation. I showed that I had about 20K in medical bills (lack of insurance) and that my mom was almost always threatened with foreclosure, but it didn’t help. There are certain scholarships that might take care of housing, but for the most part grant aid isn’t meant to cover housing costs. I tried for the Topping Scholarship and I was told that the typical award (5K), would adjust the university grant I was already getting (in that it would be reduced by 5K); it would not go toward housing costs.

@Worldchamp24 congrats on your early Marshall acceptance! Would you mind sharing your GPA, are you sophomore or junior applicant and from CC or 4-year? Thanks and good luck at USC!!

@yinhan congrats!! im currently at LMU and trying to transfer to USC but so far haven’t heard anything :,)
