2020-2021 USC Transfer

They accepted almost 2,000 more freshman applicants than usual for the first time in more than a decade. 9500 instead of 7500. So depending on yield, we will see. You will also see study abroad likely not happening, so those students will now be on campus which could affect spring or transfer rates. Things can be spun any way you want to see them, but thinking transfers are cheaper than freshman applicants doesn’t make sense since transfers fill spaces left by others, they don’t replace freshman. One could argue that full pay people will be more advantageous than those needing tons of aid given this challenging financial time. Not saying they will do that, just that the story can be spun many different ways to fit many different scenarios. Truth is, there are a lot of unknowns in every regard!

@hermit1214 Thank you for your service and best of luck to you! Frankly, it sounds very good.

@nbrewer For some schools winter quarter just ended the last week of March. So they want those grades on top of fall quarter that ended in December. If people in these schools also get an SGR they aren’t gonna get admissions results until late June/July. And there are a lot in that boat, but hopefully, the WGR appeases them and they find out earlier. @mckennadavis the request is a good thing.

I am a first year currently attending a quarter system school and have not received a winter grade request; is that a bad thing? It’s getting me worried lol

Hey guys! I am new to this forum but I applied to USC as a transfer last year and was accepted. I couldn’t attend because of financial reasons, but I’m applying again, so hopefully I get lucky again this time around lol. I saw that some of you were asking when you would get a decision for a SGR- last year for me, I sent mine to USC around May 23rd, and received my decision on May 31st! Good luck to everyone, hopefully we all get in:).

@Heisenberg15 would you mind sharing some of your stats : )?

@CADREAMIN Thank you. I’m just worried about the stuff I submitted to the school, I’m fairly confident in my short film submission and 4-minute short (no dialogue) concept. But as far as my personal statement, not really. haha.

I’m just hoping for the best now.

Didn’t the new president offer free tuition to students who earn less than 80k family income.

@sleeplessincali I had a 3.82 GPA Non TTP. Pretty much a very average applicant, but I think what really helped me was my essays

@erina19 unfortunately that is only for incoming freshmen:(

was that tuition thing before or after the pandemic? This pandemic might change a lot of things for a lot of people.

I believe it was before freshmen got accepted and during this pandemic, a lot of accepted freshmen will be taking that advantage so I feel like the school will be needing more finances as a private school. Hopefully they accept many transfer students as well. Worst case scenario, there wouldn’t be enough space to accept many transfer students… but who knows.

That’s possible… let’s hope for the best.

@hermit1214 Adam Driver :slight_smile:

@Doodlesack I love that guy! Dude is such an inspiration.

@CADREAMIN Should there be any concern that they will accept fewer TTP transfers? While I know this was never a firm guarantee, it was pretty close. Do you anticipate them going back on that should the freshman acceptance rate be higher?

General question: My parents make more than enough to pay the full tuition price, but they do not provide any aid nor am I listed as a dependent on their taxes (I have filed independent the last two years). I said I needed to apply for need based aid when I submitted my commonapp, but my parents information was used for FAFSA and CSS. My previous four year was more expensive than USC, and I didn’t get any aid because they used my parents financial information. Even though I said I would be pursuing need based aid on my application, are they going to solely look at my parents financial information when determining my financial aid?

Hi! Does anyone know when the first round of admissions for transfers will be released? Getting super nervous but excited:)

Can you change majors as a transfer or even minor on something else??

I believe you have to commit to your major if you are a junior transfer (or possibly switch in the first few days), but you can still add a minor. Sophomore transfers still have a year to switch their major, I believe.

@sleeplessincali During a transfer day I remember the financial aid portion brought up what qualifies a student as independent. Meaning they won’t consider your parent’s financial information when it comes to aid. You have to be 24 or older. An orphan. A grad student. Married. Have dependents. Or be a veteran. There may be other ways to be considered an independent student, but these are the ones they mentioned. (You only have to be one of those, not all.)

A lot of prospective students had questions regarding this, that I remember clearly, including a female student who mentioned her parents don’t help her out and she basically has been on her own for a couple years. The counselor let her know that because she still wasn’t over 24, she would not be considered an independent student and urged her to fill out both the css and fafsa apps.

@seabee91 Thank you for the clarification! I know those are the rules for fafsa too so I assumed it would be something similar, I’m just curious to see how usc would view my financials. That definitely clears up some confusion for me.

@seabee91 good luck in your application bro
