2020-2021 USC Transfer

I actually do go to a semester system school and only took one class during winter semester so I am confused as to why they asked for my winter grades instead of my spring grades like most others.

@hussey1 That certainly sounds odd. Not many people tend to utilize the winter intercession because of how compact it can be. I believe the winter session at my community college was 5 weeks long. Perhaps it was a mistake and you might want to ask. Was the course a really important/core course? Perhaps that’s why they want to see the grade, but it is rather unusual.

@zettasyntax The course was not important at all or related to my major. I took it because it was an easy class so I can fulfill the minimum 60 units to transfer to a UC.
On the portal, it asks for winter grades and they sent me an email asking for winter grades as well, so I am not sure that it was a mistake. Just very confused! Haha

when do most trojan transfer students hear back?

Number of pages on CC for Transfer Applicants this year is way down from last year at the same time. Is it Covid-19? Are Transfer apps just way down this year?

@SlackJack006 what do you mean pages? colleges are experiencing a decrease in applications this year due to covid, but nothing huge (harvard was 8% less).

@mill213 I think they are talking about this forum not having as many pages as the past USC transfer forums had a lot more people chatting.

@hussey1 I’m in the same boat and I’m rather confused as well … maybe they won’t ask for an SGR and we’ll get a decision sooner (hopefully)

@historylover5 ohh i see. yeah i thought the same thing when i was digging through last years thread! a lot of the other schools i’m applying to have a low page count on their threads, not sure why!

This site went through an overhaul last fall that wasn’t well received because it makes things/threads hard to find as they would rather push their own articles etc. It has had a drop off of participation all around. I don’t think it has anything to do with less applications as much as the site itself.

Hey all! I’m a sophomore transfer hopeful for Viterbi currently attending a UC with a couple questions on my mind that I was curious about:

a.) How much does taking a higher-level course help gloss up an application? (Phrased differently, how differently would they weigh two students, one who perhaps finished the Calc III series with A-'s and one who completed Calc II with As)

b.) Are community college and 4-year grades and GPAs weighed equally? And if not, is the difference in most cases of any significance?

@mill213 I think Covid-13 has contributed to the drop lately in Transfers, but USC’s deadline for Transfers was Feb 1st, which was earlier than when the country shut down. I’ve looked at RD & ED app lists for the Ivies, plus a few other Elites, and (except for Brown & Cornell) all were down from last year to this year. Since the ED & RD deadlines are a lot earlier for those schools than say a March 15th (a lot of schools’ Transfer App Deadline), I am wondering what the cause is.

I’m a parent & I’ve heard some parents say the “Varsity Blues” scandal turned them off of Elite Schools for fear that the system is basically rigged. Don’t know for sure what is going on.

I received my Financial Aid Award this morning, just 5 days after receiving my acceptance. So depending on your situation, financial aid should come soon after being admitted!

@SlackJack006 I met with a retired admissions officer from johns hopkins during my application process and he did say that USC has and will continue to receive less applications since the scandal

@Worldchamp24 I’m guessing you are TTP? Has anyone who isn’t TTP been accepted yet?

Which one is better for electrical engineering, UCLA or USC?

@raaazo
a) I think they’re just happy to see any form of A. I went to several community colleges and they all had no +/- distinction. Of course, if you’re higher up in the sequence, that’s definitely more attractive even if it wasn’t a high A.

b) This is really hard to say. I remember chatting with somebody from UCB. He was a prospective Viterbi transfer as well. His grades were a little on the lower side, but I surely thought the perceived rigor of UCB would help him out. He was still below the transfer average. He did not get in. In most cases, I would say it doesn’t really matter, but perhaps to some people that look over your application, it might.

Sorry if not too helpful, but I don’t believe we have an insider in admissions yet despite me always saying somebody should do that for their work-study and spill the beans here, haha. Maybe they can’t, but some insider info would be nice.

@SlackJack006 The conversation was only asking about why there are less pages on this college confidential thread, not actual transfer applications.

@Pendoo Both are great schools, answer is subjective. We chose USC for EE & CS over UCLA and UCB, but I am sure others chose it the other way. Have to decide what you like better - public v private, location, the facilities, size of classes, the campus, school colors - meaning, whatever factors are important to you.

I got an SGR last week when the first round went out. I’m a non-TTP Junior year applicant for CS. I was wondering if SGRs are indicative that you’re missing a prerequisite because I’ve checked a few times and as far as I can tell, I’ve met all the requirements to transfer but now I’m getting worried. My GPA isn’t a perfect 4.0 but it’s pretty close, if that means anything.
