hey guys. i might ask some dumb questions. i am mainly focused on applying to UCs, but im applying usc as well. when i entered my colleges, why it say that i dont need to report any coursework? also is there an essay for usc? i remember writing one as a freshman applicant. i only see supplements and not a big essay. thank you.
In fall 2019 i completed 19 units and i am currently taking 12 units which means i will have 31 units done by the end of the year. Do i still need to send my SAT scores or is it fine since they will see my “in progress” credits on my college transcript?
@CADREAMIN Glad to see you on this thread again. Anyways, I was hoping you could provide some help with my situation. I applied last year and was accepted for this spring semester, but I had to withdraw due to financial issues. So I’ve decided to apply again but for junior year since I’ll be able to save some money. Will my chances be lower this time since I was already accepted last year but declined their offer? Also, is it possible for me to reuses certain parts of my essays from last year for this cycle? It’s been only a year and I haven’t done much in between.
Hey There @GotYa55 !
Did you ask for an extension for enrollment before you declined?
I would be sure to email your admissions advisor (whether they reply is always to be seen as you know) and let them know the circumstances. And make it part of your essays - that you took the year to be stronger coming in now kind of thing. Discuss somewhere how excited you were to get in, but devastated you couldn’t afford it and how you will be able to handle it this year. Not with dreams, but with real plans. But yes, after a decline of offer it can be harder if you don’t explain it to someone or somewhere. They have to know you are 100% sincere this time.
You don’t have to have done much, but at least freshen them up. My guess is if you just read through them there will be obvious things to edit/change. It’s always easier to edit an old essay, certainly more than a current one.
Good luck, here we go again!
@CADREAMIN Thank you for the help! I actually did not ask for an extension of my enrollment when I was withdrawing. I was thinking of deferring but according to the usc website, I wouldn’t be able to take any classes at a CC during my deferral period. That wouldn’t help my situation at all since I’ll still have to pay for 2.5 years at usc by the time I come back. I was hoping to reapply again as a junior instead since I’ll only be paying for junior and senior years. Even better if I get accepted as spring junior. Is there a section on the common app that I could write about my situation?
Also, if I do reapply then I will be applying for Marshall instead so I might be able to change up my essays a little bit.
Don’t you still have to answer the why USC kind of question? That is a great place to say it has always been USC and why you are applying again after being accepted but unable to afford it… and you have been doing everything you can to get there…for example…
Hello all! Does anybody have any insight as to when transfer applicants that applied for the December 1st deadline will hear back decisions? I know for freshmen it’s around Feb. 1st, but not sure if that’s the same for transfers.
Transfers hear back from April to July. Seriously. It’s brutal.
for those of you submitting a letter of recommendation, how did you go about this? i asked my professor at the beginning of the month if she could write one for me and she said yes… however i’m unsure how to proceed. thanks lol
also, what does the pre-professional emphasis affect? for example, my first choice major is marshall, business admin, my second choice is economics. if i put pre-accounting will this affect any chances of getting into either major?
@CADREAMIN for transfer students who applied for BFA theatre with a second choice of BA theatre in SDA, do you have any idea whether they’ll hear first about accept/reject for the BFA program (and being rolled into the BA pool if rejected)? Or whether they’ll hear their whole acceptance/rejection all at once? It also wasn’t super clear about the acceptance timeline – April to July?
Hi Everyone, I was wondering if I was the only one having an issue entering college coursework for the USC common app? When I press it, it says “You do not have to enter any college coursework for the program you have selected.” Can someone give me feedback on this please!
I heard Viterbi is the last department to send out admission decisions. Does anyone know the latest decisions have been sent out in the past? Also, are Juniors favored over Sophomore applicants? How many Sophomores are admitted compared to Juniors?
Good luck to everyone this application period!
@MagicBus Viterbi is typically one of the last schools to release their decisions, yes. The majority come out mid to late May. There might be smaller batches or a trickle here or there, but usually they do come out in May. Last year, I believe SCA set the record. Many students didn’t hear anything until several days after the June 1st deadline. It was a bit wild. Students were admitted to SCA majors they didn’t necessarily apply for, lots of spring admits, and quite a few undeclared admits if I recall. It was crazier than usual and things just seemed off. I would hope they can stick to their deadline a little better this year. Such a thing has never happened with Viterbi, but it really goes to show that the transfer process can be a bit insane. Hmm, I’m not really sure they favor either one. They just want students that are making progress (knocking out core classes like calc for say CS majors) and are overall the type of students that they believe would add to the student population at USC.
@zettasyntax Thank you for answering my questions. My son is a community college student and will be applying as a sophomore to CS and will be done with all of his Math by the Spring.
He took Calc 1 at a University during HS but received a B grade. Do you know if that will count as part of his transfer GPA?
Also, he will be taking his first Physics class in the Spring. As I understand it, two Physics classes are needed to be a strong applicant. I am worried because he will only have one and he won’t have a grade for it until the end of Spring.
Good to see some familiar faces here! I am a transfer student who applied last year and got in for Spring 2020. My semester so far has been terrific at USC mainly because of the student body here. For my first two weeks, I have met so many unique and insightful individuals. I was only alone twice or three times for lunch for the past two weeks so almost all my meals were with some of my friends. I connected well with some new friends who transferred from 4-year Universities such as UCI and Syracuse, but I also have a couple CC friends as well. I would say the hardest transition is to catch up and maintain good relationships with my high school friends or other old friends who got into USC as freshmen since all of them have their own friend groups already.
Also, there is something going on every day on campus and I am never bored and my schedule is always super packed except for Friday(no class) and the weekends.
@CADREAMIN I am so glad to see you again! On an interesting note, I am suddenly curious if you are a father or mother of the family? I should have asked you last year but still!
For the rest of you who are applying this year, good luck and feel free to ask me any questions!
Does anyone know how I can get in contact with my admissions counselor? I used the counselor finder feature on the website but it didn’t give me any of her contact information. Should I just call the admissions office?
I have a strong gpa and good extracurriculars. The thing is that I have several withdrawals, how bad are w’s and should I explain them on my application?
@poolsideconvo78 Ws are certainly not ideal because they lower your units count when transferring classes to USC. However, if you have a good GPA then I don’t think 1 or 2 Ws will hurt you much.
I have 2 Ws and still got in. If you have 3 or more Ws, then maybe you should explain them in your application.
@transferjune You will need to put his or her name in Google and search for his or her’s email.
