2020-2021 USC Transfer

@MagicBus Hmm, that’s a tricky one. I don’t know the answer. I can’t seem to come up with the answer based on this

http://ask.usc.edu/app/answers/detail/a_id/573/~/what-kind-of-credit-can-i-receive-for-college-courses-i-took-while-in-high

Perhaps somebody who was in a similar situation can shed light about how such courses were calculated into their transfer credit report.

This would likely just mean that he has greater odds of getting a spring grade request. They will (almost) certainly want to see how he did in physics before making a final decision. If he had no physics course in-progress, then I would be a little worried. He just needs to do well in that class this semester  And there’s always surprises where people get in without that spring grade request. Those can be brutal and I would never wish one on somebody.

@sagaciousforever I’m happy to hear that you’re enjoying your first semester! My transition to USC in the fall went very well. Although, it was pretty overwhelming in terms of just how much there is to do around campus. So much to do, so little time lol.

@poolsideconvo78 Extracurriculars aren’t a huge factor in transfer admissions. It is mostly about your GPA, GE/major prereq completion, and your essays. USC frowns upon Ws. If the Ws are in major-related coursework, I would definitely explain why you withdrew from the class on the application.

Does anyone know how heavily they count highschool grades if you are applying with 30 credit hours fulfilled by time of enrollment? If they look at highschool, do you know if they look at all 4 years or just senior year?

@zettasyntax Thanks again. I was hoping the B grade wouldn’t count as it is his lowest grade. In addition, he took the Calc AP exam in HS and scored a 5 so I was thinking it may be duplication of credit.

I was worried about the Spring grade request. But it totally makes sense that they would want to see his Physics grade first. He tried to enroll last semester but the class filled up before his enrollment time. It sounds like we are in for a long ride unless he somehow gets an outright acceptance/non-acceptance in May.

@franzgzlz24 The cutoff for the admissions team to (basically) throw out your high school record is 32 units. Anything less than that and they will pay (some) attention to your high school coursework. Your college GPA and course selection will matter significantly more though.

@vegastransfer looks like I’m sticking with 19 credits this semester. May I ask you where you got this information regarding 32 credits being the cut off? Thank you!

@vegastransfer I am glad that your transition was well too! We should meet up at some point this semester if you are down.

It’s actually 30 credits:

“USC does not require a minimum number of transfer units. However, if you have earned fewer than 30 transferable semester units, we will base our decision either primarily on your high school record and SAT or ACT scores, or wait to receive your spring-term grades”

https://admission.usc.edu/apply/transfer-students/

Note: Specific schools with USC may have different requirements.

For those who have already submitted their application, did you get a portal link in your email or anything like that? Also, how do you check if USC has received your transcript and scores and all.

@franzgzlz24 I submitted my application back in December. I’ve been able to log into my USC portal since then. They sent the email with instructions on setting it up a couple of days after I submitted my application.

In your portal it will say what documents USC has received or is awaiting to receive. You can also contact an admissions counselor if you have any questions regarding your application. They have been quite helpful for me.

Did anyone else not have to input their college courses in the common app? I remembered I had to do it last year so I’m a little confused if it’s on my part or theirs.

It looks like that for me too. No idea why

Also, for the approx 250 word count limit. Does anyone know the threshold as to how far one can push it?

Hello! Just gonna hop on this thread. I just sent in my application and I read in this thread that apparently it’s a bad idea to use the “Why weren’t you enrolled in 4 semester unit credits” question if you were already full time? Like I was almost always a full time student but I didn’t have 4 semester units so I just clarified in the box :/. Kinda worried if this is going to mess up my chances since I explained why I didn’t take 4 exactly (pushed classes to winter/summer intersessions and took hard stem classes and wanted to fit in work hours).

Also, I just sent in my transcripts last night RIGHT after I sent my application (didn’t get portal email before I did that) and then this morning, I got an email from my school saying the transcript has been received by USC. I hop on the USC portal and it still says its missing. Do I just wait a little longer or something?

ALSO (lol sorry), I clicked on the financial aid thing in the portal and clicked the 2020-2021 option and it doesn’t show anything even though I already sent in my FAFSA. Am I just being impatient here or should I be concerned

@bean01262020 it takes a while for the fafsa and your submitted documents to appear. shouldn’t be more than a couple days max, anything longer than that and I’d contact an admissions counselor.

Hi everyone! I just turned in my application, but I was just wondering: how many words long are your essays? Is it acceptable to go a lot over 650 words for the general statement?

If you turned it in, it really doesn’t matter at this point, right? There is a reason for the limits…

As Mark Twain said,
“I didn’t have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead.”

or Benjamin Franklin:
“I have already made this paper too long, for which I must crave pardon, not having now time to make it shorter.”

or Woodrow Wilson:
“That depends on the length of the speech,” answered the President. “If it is a ten-minute speech it takes me all of two weeks to prepare it; if it is a half-hour speech it takes me a week; if I can talk as long as I want to it requires no preparation at all. I am ready now.”

There’s many folks credited with a similiar quote of that meaning.

Just look forward - good luck!

Is it bad if we go over the word count for the 250-word limit essays for usc?

@CADREAMIN

I have like 285 and 280 on them
