@CADREAMIN I was actually asking because I thought it was odd that their character limit was 65,000, which doesn’t even remotely match the 650-word limit that they specified in the prompt! But thanks for your response.
Stay close to the word count. The prompt is what counts; it is the direction that USC is giving that they want followed. The character count is just space set up in the application. Frankly, I wouldn’t go over. If you must, no more than 10%.
Good luck @woshua great to see you again!
@zettasyntax huh? literally almost everyone who gets in does not get a spring grade request.
What could I possibly add to the personal statement option for USC? Explain low grades on certain classes?
I would focus on positives - things you have learned/gained, etc. rather than focusing on the low grades…unless you just reference them. For example, "After I received the low grade in xyz, I realized/I changed/I adjusted…or after the fall of sophomore year I realized/changed/adjusted/grew etc…
show learning, not excuses.
Is the application due at 11:59 pm on the day its due(02/1) or is it before this date.
I’m a freshman in community college trying to apply for Marshall transfer. My gpa is 4.0. However, I will only finish 5/8 GE courses by the end of spring semester. I have my macro, micro, calculus 1 done, but I am taking the second calculus class, English writing, and accounting in spring semester. My sat score was 1440 back in high school and my gpa fluctuates a lot, ranging from 3.7-4.6. Academic wise, will I be disadvantaged as a sophomore transfer? I don’t have ttp and got rejected by Annenberg as a high school applicant
@issacissac You’re definitely in a really good position, imo. I only had 5/8 GEs done as well and a 4.0 when I transferred during sophomore year and I was accepted. It’s worth noting that it’s mandatory to complete at least two more GEs when you’re at USC so I don’t see any reason to go above 6. However, you’re most likely going to receive a Spring Grade Request since you’re taking an important pre req, your English course, so do well in that class. Also, if your units are less than 30 by the end of spring then they’ll also weigh on your high school gpa and SAT scores as well. You’re in a good position, though, so I wouldn’t worry at all. You’re well above the average. There’s no disadvantage whether you apply as a sophomore or junior transfer from what I’ve been told. I will say though that during my my orientation I mainly met junior transfer
if i submitted my app 4 hours late will they still consider my application with the other applications that were submitted on time? im not sure if i should ask them or if i should not just draw attention to it
So I applied for transfer admission last night, but checked after I submitted my application and a huge part of my “why do you want to transfer” essay was cut off, even though it met the word limit easily. I reached out to my specific counselor there, but do you think she will allow me to send her my completed essay still?
Do TTPs usually receive transfer admission decisions earlier than regular transfer applicants? I am applying for Viterbi so I don’t know if being a TTP would change it.
@carfs27 Definitely email your admission counselor first.
What is the average GPA does USC SCA normally accepts? I have a low-ish GPA, my current GPA is only 3.42 (42 credit units total) and my GPA for the college prior to that and took in another country is even lower (like 2.4ish).
Also, does being a military veteran help at all when it comes to getting admitted?
@hermit1214 When I attended a transfer day at USC in November, we were told the average transfer GPA the previous year was 3.7. However, the admissions counselor did mention that a student in the 2s made it because of strong essays.
I’m a veteran and I’m not relying solely on that taking me over the top. I spent a tremendous amount of time on my USC essays alone. I connected with several admissions counselors and I’ve worked hard to have a high gpa. It’s all about making yourself the most well rounded applicant and not relying on one thing. Hopefully you had good marks in your prerequisite courses, if applicable.
Oh yeah. I heard about that. I’m just worried about my college GPA from the Philippines, although I know that most, if not all, would transfer over (there’s not even an articulation history with that school).
Definitely. I did spend a bit of time with my USC essay, although I feel like I could’ve improved it a bit more. Especially the short questions such as “favorite snack, which fictional roommate would you want…”. I answered as is, and didn’t put an explanation since I thought you didn’t need one
I’m pretty confident with my 5-minute short film, creative writing requirement and creative resume though.
@hermit1214 I’d say not to worry as much about your older gpa, because it seems like you’re trending upward in your performance. This is something I’ve heard helps, based off these forums and from admissions counselors.
I graduated in 2009 and I attended cc for two years and had a 2.2 gpa. I finished my enlistment in the summer of 2018 and have been attending cc with much higher gpa. I’ve been accepted by two private colleges here in California so far, so that makes me think that they’re looking more at my current gpa and coursework.
I don’t think the short questions can make or break your chances, they’re more opportunities for the university to see the type of person you are (likes/interests/etc).
That eases off some of my worries then. Thank you.
Bro, I finished my enlistment summer of 2019. Haha. I’m planning on applying to two other schools besides USC as well.
If I have a 4.0 but have 15 credits fulfilled so far and 16 in progress this semester (31 at the end of this semester), am I still a strong candidate or does the low credit count change things?
Hi guys, I’m pretty new here! I applied on the deadline and now I feel very anxious about it.
This is my first time applying to so I have no clue on what my chances are. I’m applying to Marshall as a sophomore with a 4.0 GPA (33 units so far). I took all the pre-reqs and will complete all the GEs after spring.
Transferring from: Pasadena City College
ECs: a business position in an honor society that runs a committee, in a committee for associated students, volunteers here and there, 2 years of soccer in high school, honors program, college intern for the Rose Parade.

What are my chances?
Thanks guys! Good luck!
