2020-2021 USC Transfer

@beachygirl28 Absolutely not. @usctransfersquad nailed it. This site is filled with the posting remains of 4.0s that were rejected during regular admissions, the transfer process and after getting WGR/SGRs. They are a private school using holistic admissions which pretty much means they can take and reject who they want for reasons only they know. They are trying to build a unique class, not one with all 4.0s, they could do that with ease. They have rejected close to 4,000 4.0 students and those with stats in the 99th percentile in the regular admissions process, that is more than the size of the incoming class.

@beachygirl28 Yup, you can get high grades after an SGR and still get rejected. I know from experience =\ I was taking 21 units and got A’s in 5 of the classes, but wound up with a B in the sixth class. Rejected. It would look like they rejected me for getting my first B, but that can’t be it as people get B’s all the time and are accepted. There was definitely a bigger picture thing going on there and there must have been something off with me that just made it hard for them to accept me that year. Maybe it was because I didn’t want to commit to a major, haha. I used Undecided/Dornsife as my first major choice.

Hey guys, I haven’t received an SGR for Viterbi Computer Science yet as a junior transfer. Has anyone gotten in without receiving an SGR?

Also, if I want to change my major from CSCI to CS Games, should I email my admissions officer now or is it too late?

"Unfortunately we will not have any decisions made until May 31. "

-From my USC Admission Counselor

@wwu9907 i feel like they’re just saying that because they don’t usually give applicants an exact date for when they release waves (or maybe I’m just being hopeful lol)

@wwu9907 some people have gotten accepted (and rejected apparently) already so that’s a lie lol

I just got an SGR after getting WGR on April 27. I currently go to UC Davis and honestly I really can’t wait til mid july for a decision. I’m going to email my counselor and try and make a case, because this is just ridiculous at this point. I have already wasted 2 quarters worth of classes taking GE’s that transfer to USC because the ones I had didn’t, and now they are asking me to wait til mid July, after summer session 1. I’m applying as junior transfer to marshall, and over it.

@Heisenberg15 You’re definitely right that you could get accepted earlier, I just meant based on my call yesterday with admissions that they “claim” to not look at the SGR applications until mid-June so that way those who end earlier do not have an unfair advantage. i think this is the case for most, but there are definitely some outliers that refutes what he told me yesterday, I just have not seen anyone get in earlier who got a SGR until you mentioned it. Now that definitely messes with my head after what they told me yesterday, does anyone know how that works? Because if they evaluate the SGR people who have an early semester before others then that’s a huge and unfair advantage, so I’m curious as to if anyone has any knowledge on how they evaluate the SGR people considering everyone ends at different times.

They are evaluating all along the way - they are not holding until June to look at things. They have an admit and likely admit pile already put together. They already have an idea if admitting you and sometimes just need/want the validation of grades, they are not waiting to review anything. They have your history and your planned courses - the SGR is just the topping. So if your quarter ends in mid-June, they already know if you are in the good pile or not - there is no unfair advantage or disadvantage. They also have to wait on the schools to provide counts after the May 1 results came in, balance with the abroad folks that aren’t going now, how many of each gender, other demographics, all kinds of things in play. In May, you will see people send in their SGR then get in the next day, while others wait, it happens. This is the frustrating eye of the hurricane, things will start rolling out anytime. But if you can keep busy (ya, in a pandemic, right) and don’t expect it to come it will be great when it does! If you mentally set your mind to the 31st, anything earlier will seem like a bonus (ok maybe being a bit pollyanna here). I know, it blows waiting.

@CADREAMIN so when they send you the SGR they kind of already know whether or not they’re going to admit you, but the final decision is the grades? Just wanted to clarify for my piece of mind since my semester ends June 8th so I’m really worried that’s a disadvantage

@bean01262020 Yeah that’s what i’m wondering too, but that was literally the response I got after I asked her if a decision date can be estimated

So maybe she meant besides the decisions that were out in the past, there won’t be any new ones until May 31st?

I’m starting to think it’s something to the earlier post mentioning that SGR are possibly unoffical waitlist. I think SGR is probably better than nothing at all heard, like I’ve had, but if it doesn’t matter how well you do or how high your gpa, how many classes, what you have, what you’ve made, can have high hours or low, and they still make you wait until June. Sounds like a waitlist.

It just means you aren’t rejected yet… I may have said that wrong, an SGR is not an indication of acceptance either, 4.0 SGRs have been rejected. I was trying to say don’t think they haven’t reviewed all the applications, they have. You can still just be in the maybe pile with or without an SGR - there is no 1:1 correlation.

I was referring to a post from a couple of days ago. Yes, but you’re still waiting and in some cases it doesn’t matter in the end what you get according to some people on these threads… I still agree with the other person. I wonder if this way you still feel as though you’re a priority to USC and they can keep people waiting a while , in the meantime they can find out who is commiting and what spots open?

So no one has heard anything at all? I mean, besides SGRs. So they usually release in waves ?

Ahhh u really think so! I’m investing much hope here lol

cadreamin, i believe you that they’ve probably already gone through all of the apps, but why take several more weeks to release?

I get the anxiety and panic (I’m the same), but really all we can do rn is just wait lol, no point in complaining. We’re in a unique situation and USC’s release process is known to be really funky so it should be no surprise that this year is just as funky (or possibly more). Just prepare a backup college and research that one and try to buy into the idea of going there over USC. That’s what I’m doing (UCSD backup gang wya)

@grapesoda Transfers aren’t the only thing they are dealing with and not to sound harsh, but in the priority of things, they line up other things first like incoming freshman and current student issues. The covid thing has nothing to do with timing, it is the same every year. They just got committments back from the incoming class, they just cancelled study abroad, there is a lot of counting going on to figure out which schools/majors have what space. There are people sure to be admitted then oops, no room in that major. Its one giant balancing act that takes awhile to settle. Transfers are filling spaces made elsewhere.
