2023 PSU Waiting for Decisions

@lucyvanpelt I’ve been trying not to even thing about housing at PSU or elsewhere yet… but if my S gets off the Wait List, say, in May (because they said it could be as late as May 15) and then does accept, what kind of housing would he - or kids like him - get? It would have to be the worst of the worst! “Sub-supplemental”!!! Haha!

Thank you @lucyvanpelt! That makes me feel much better:)

@ziveli513. Still wishing you luck for

@pama3115 thank u!!???

I know it’s been said earlier in the thread several times, but yesterday we heard it straight from the Head of Admissions…90,000 applications. Unbelievable.

Is it possible that they are combing applications from ALL campuses? This seems more feasible.

From STEM2017: Is it possible that they are combing applications from ALL campuses? This seems more feasible.

I thought all admissions were decided in the same office at University Park? So the same office has to go through all 90K. I mean, the data entry is all done so I’m sure they can sort by stats pretty easily and make cut lines as they go.

I think when the numbers get so big the concept of holistic evaluation seems pretty hard to do. I’m sure the vast majority were done by the numbers.

@Provincetown You wouldn’t know that from the acceptance thread where people with 1100’s are getting into UP and higher stats are offered 2+2, waitlist or not hearing at all

I wonder if there will be a housing shortage this fall with the unexpected increase in apps.

Not unexpected increase, desired and planned for when psu decided to accept Common ap

But excellent point @citymama9 about the seemingly unfair by the numbers decisions being posted
And a wait list started in January, how are spots filling up at UP when applications sent months ago are not reviewed yet

Last year psu didn’t meet the 1/31 deadline due to high volume of applications apparently

So this year they should have been ready imo

Who EA and priority review expecting a decision by 1/31 is still waiting I wonder

Some represented here but may be many still
Wth

@Provincetown, @citymama9, @ziveli513 I had been thinking that my son, with pretty good stats, got wait listed BECAUSE of a holistic evaluation. My son, I have to admit, has fewer activities than many who’ve posted decisions. (But that’s because he needed more time for studies so he could combat a learning difference. I think his backstory is compelling for any admissions team with time to read that.)

Anyway, if we assume that they are letting computers do it by the numbers, there becomes little explanation for why my EA son, applying for Liberal Arts, was wait listed with his “hard number” stats.

I also worry about housing. My S may not be able to wait out the wait list for UP when push comes to shove.

Reading your posts, a newer thought I’ve had has come to the forefront. I know, I know, a Debbie Downer thought for sure. I have been wondering if they made some kind of “dart at the board” decision to move a bunch of kids to the wait list just to speed up “getting through” applications. Kind of like when you sort your own mail and you see some that may or may not be important, and you shove it into a pile on your kitchen desk for another day. You pull the immediate bills, you trash the sales papers (maybe), but that middle stuff… a pile to be dealt with another day. This notion would explain some things. Like an early wait list coming out. Like higher stat kids being on it.

All of the kids at our local high school who are high stats got in fast. Really makes me think computer decision by stats.

@myacocoa. I think you have a point about the wait list dart at the board theory and I don’t think you are a Debbie downer. Just calling it as you see it. Regarding your own sons experience

@citymama9 Thanks for pointing that out. I haven’t been tracking that thread very closely. Ugh.

Does anyone know if things like the number and types of activities are in some way numerically coded and fed to computers? Say, to be combined with test scores and GPA for a “holistic” computer churn-out.

@ziveli513. @MyaCocoa Can’t wait for you to post that your D was admitted to University Park along with everyone else waiting. My S decided to commit to PSU.

…and I meant your S @MyaCocoa

No worries @pama3115! Thanks for the well wishes.

@pama3115 yay!!! I’m so glad your s decided to commit to penn state. Happy ending ! And thank you for your many posts offering good wishes for my d too. How nice ?
Monday Monday bring us all good news ???
