@vadad2019 I can imagine they don’t tell people because they don’t want to start a conversation!
I really hope there is an answer for us and everyone by Wednesday (I’ll be checking at 12:01 am) and that we can all move on!
Thanks for your good vibes. Hope u are right
@cml123 I aware of a small number of cases, I think from the College Confidential decisions page. Also, from Facebook I learned of students who turned down the wait list and were offered admission right away to UP and Summer Start - though they had never asked for Summer and didn’t know what it was!
@ziveli513 What a ginormous load of horse hooey! What kind of “stuck”? Like when you spill jam on your keyboard and then the keys get stuck? Or like when some critter gets inside the server and pees or poos or chews a wire? OH! ONLY the wire connecting to the EA students? Baloney. Blame the top-of-the-line Oracle system, that’s the trick!
I’m sure they didn’t tell you over the phone because if word got out they’d be flooded with begging calls.
@marniefaerie Unreal! I’d be screaming and beating my head on things. SO wrong!
In the meantime my S is driving me nuts. He now wants a Summer Start offer to UP because he can’t figure out what to do with himself all summer and he’s ready to fly the coup. BUT PSU IS YOUR #2 AND WE HAVE TO WAIT, KID! No pressure here at all!
@MYOS1634 No, he did not originally. We only learned about it here and from Facebook. My concern is what I call “jerking PSU around” if in fact he finds out by April 1 that USC (So Cal) accepted him (long shot) he would choose them. So why would I help him jockey for position vis-a-vis other PSU applicants when he might turn PSU down after all of that? My feeling is we wait for USC and only then decide what discussion needs to be had with PSU - if any.
@MyaCocoa u continue to lighten the load by making me laugh so hard, jam on keyboard
Ever see space balls?old Mel brooks hilarious Star Wars spoof, the radar is jammed (cut to shot of jam oozing down radar screen). Just my kind of humor
The Admissions officer looked up the psu id, took one look and I swear I heard her gulp and then she started hemming and hawing. Umm there was some confusion—- I cut in, with the application—-oh no, she said, um a group of early action got stuck
System problems etc
No apology by the way, she was very nice but clearly uncomfortable when she saw the application
The email reply was dry too. Stated yes your application was under review. A decision has been made. Will be posted on Wednesday
Nothing human or compassionate or remotely apologetic
Which of course is understandable because I’m guessing they are being very careful not to accept blame
So my theory is that chunk of aps that my daughter was in, the EA that were deferred 12/22 roughly due to “high volume” , for my d the portal had that deferral message until 1/24
That day the portal cycled through several messages and landed back “under review” to date no change
On 1/24 someone posted here they talked to admissions who said that a group of EA were taken off the “board” and now were in with priority review for 1/31 deadline
Roughly quoted, I recall that because there had been no change to my d portal from 12.22 deferral message to 1/24 back to under review
So we who got “stuck” really may have been a very large number if they are still sorting through these applications
My d would have been accepted by now to UP as DUS in any normal circumstance I think I can objectively deduce
If she does not get UP, or gets wait listed because no space at UP now that she’s “unstuck” I will definitely make an attempt to plead her case for unusual circumstance and reconsideration, the admissions counselor said there had been “confusion” and system issues
Of course wasn’t in the email that I could use but hopefully penn state will own the obvious delay past 1/31
Though she’s leaning Pitt and has other offers, she still suddenly will say oh I think I want to go to penn state , it’s that sentimental legacy family pa high school pull
Hope we don’t have to fight but I’m ready if we do
@ziveli513 I would think there could be a privacy issue with over the phone - I’m not surprised that they wouldn’t give it over the phone … but they should say, “a decision has been made, let me update your daughter’s portal right now”. i wonder if SHE called if they would be any different?
I know from orientation - they are very clear about FERPA rights. When kids get to college, they “delegate” access to parents - and we only see schedule and finances. We can’t see a lot of stuff that they can see. They make it very clear that a student should not share their login information - they have had problems with parents (in the past) changing schedules and such. And there are kids who have had their login suspended after system administrators discovered parents logging in.
@marniefaerie I wouldn’t be surprised if there are kids in a similar boat that get waitlisted from Schreyer and when they hear a psu admission, their status on Schreyer changes. Who knows? This year is unprecedented for so many reasons!
Penn State has a top notch IT program. Maybe they need to get those very talented students to redesign this system that clearly doesn’t work!
I’d be livid if I applied EA and didn’t hear because of “confusion”. And now Schreyer decisions are being released but they can’t give a Schreyer decision to kids who haven’t been accepted yet. It’s just a giant pile of bull that is harming applicants who really want to go to Penn State and wanted the honors college as well.
@MyaCocoa : he could call and say “you know, finally I want to do summer start, is there a way to arrange that?” At this point it won’t do any harm. Odds are he’ll have a quicker reply since summer session can’t be full yet.
@jlhpsu: the Schreyer essays were really HARD this year too, so no one completed them just for fun. These students really want the honors college. And they tend to be among the best students at PSU, so keeping them on tenterhooks is a really bad idea for the university, since they must have offers elsewhere and add good stats to the CDS profile.
@MYOS1634 But if he chooses Summer Start, how do I deal with the uncontrollable crying I feel coming on losing my oldest child a few weeks early??? I almost feel like I can’t cope with that change.
Hi @ziveli513 I just checked in and saw that your wait is almost over. Wishing that your D and family get the best of news on Wednesday (at 12:01AM) Hope your first post on Wednesday @ 12:05am — ok maybe 12:22am after your sigh of relief and celebration !!! is “ACCEPTED UP”. Same to everyone else still waiting for their decision or being accepted off of the waitlist @MyaCocoa.
I wouldn’t think switching to summer would be the same as a commitment. He has till May 1 - as long as he’s not paid a deposit, Penn State wouldn’t ‘count’ on him.
Losing him… Ey, you can decide to let him go for summer start ONLY if you guys can go for a weekend (4th of July or whenever the festival takes place) and spend time with him. This way = vacation! Plus you get to see him in his new Habitat, meaning you can imagine him doing his usual stuff every day henceforth ;). “He’s going to class” and you imagine the path because you’ve seen it and the building… “He’s at lunch” and you can picture his favorite on campus eatery…
@ziveli513 and all the others waiting I wish you all good luck. @MyaCocoa - yes it is a different schedule then you originally planned, but “if you think the $ is worth summer” - listen to your son and allow him to choose. As a mother I read your comment as your son trying to secure the best opportunity for himself. You did well he has taken that step towards his future.
I will also state that having a current Sophomore- she really wishes she went that summer. Due to having internships she has to take online courses in order to not have to take 18 credits a semester. So the summer start is definitely a plus.
