SEC fined TX $250k but the more serious penalty is that unless they can control ‘the situation’, alcohol sales will be halted. Wonder how much they make from sales per game?

I read about the fine and other stipulations later in the day and thought the same thing. The threat of losing alcohol sales will get all schools’ attention… and their fans.

I’ll be interested to see how successful TX will be at identifying offenders (and banning for the remainder of the season) as the SEC requested…

At least the bad calls went both ways. Georgia got 2 targeting fouls. The SEC needs to have mandatory eye exams for referees.

I don’t know…Texas fans are pretty dedicated. Alcohol or not, they’re still crazy :joy:

I completely agree that there were bad calls all around. Of course, there are plenty of comments otherwise on social media, but it was just crazy bad officiating. Period.

Honestly, it was a frustrating game to watch. Other than the UGA defense, did anyone really show up? I was losing my mind with the interceptions, receivers’ fumble fingers, etc. I’m thrilled with the UGA defense finally showing their ability, but the disappointment with the offense keeps me from getting too high-hat about this win. UGA (and the SEC teams) are too inconsistent this year. Exciting maybe, yet not good for the ol’ ticker. Lol

SECShorts just dropped. There’s a little shoutout to the refs.

And a great moment for that fantastic Vandy character. Per usual.

I think that applies to most SEC (and Big 10) schools, in my experience!

both targeting calls were legit. one cannot hit anyone with the crown of the helmet. the defense must keep their eyes up and see the ball carrier, not spear them.

The problem, though (I’m not a GA fan) was the offensive player lowered his head first and attacked his spleen. I think the NCAA might have to re-think their targeting rules. I agree it was legit, but there should be more flexibility built in.

I’ll split the difference and say the first targeting was a good call, the second wasn’t and there was one in between that GA got the play off before they could review so the targeting calls worked out fine.

Agree that two days later I don’t know what to think of that game. i expected that this would be a clash of titans and instead it was a meeting of meh.

Lack of alcohol sales is one reason that I prefer going to volleyball games. Such a great, family-friendly environment.

100% - best description of that game I’ve seen/heard yet.

Yeah, I kept waiting for the game to start!

that’s fine and true. but then if you really watch literally any football game, you will see that targeting, by the strict letter of the rule, happens 20 to 40 times a game and is not called. it’s very hard to be eyes up and get your head out to side or the other, or only tackle with no contact above the armpit, on every play. very, very hard. your head naturally dips when you lean in to make a tackle. you’re not meeting someone standing straight up and shaking hands. every tackler on every play is launching their body, and your head is attached to your torso. this is so much more nuanced and difficult than people think. sure, there are some blatant Chuck Cecil type hits to the head. but A LOT of hits that are far from that get called, and the whole thing is called super inconsistently and that’s a problem.

there was outrage over a non-targeting call in the Cal / Miami game, which the refs got right btw (nvm that it would have bailed out Cal for an epic failure to hold a lead), where it was very hard to tell how much crown touched the offensive players head. the tackle came from the side and there was really no way the tackler could avoid all contact with the opposing players helmet, particular when the player being hit lowers his body and thus his head, and thereby changes the scope of the originally intended target.

the kids aren’t lying when they say this is a ‘bang bang’ sport. I’ve played it as a defensive player, and you really have no time to think or you’re going to be beaten badly. none of these kids want to be ejected.

A sportswriter once said that football is not a contact sport; it is a collision sport.

CU students had to be warned not to throw things onto the field after a call they didn’t like. A reporter asked if this was ‘like it was at Texas’ and Prime said no, but it was pretty clear he thought it was like Texas, fans throwing can after what they thought was a bad call (it wasn’t). At CU everyone can bring 2 bottles of water into the stadium, which make it a little cheaper to throw than the $14 can of beer

It also looks like the punter had a wide-open receiver down the field, had he chosen to pass the football.
