submitted 8 pages of poetry, mixed formats and styles, I’d like to think its pretty good, but honestly its just the best of the pieces I’ve written, with focuses towards what I wrote about in my essay. All modern and free verse though.
my personal essay was about how at the beginning of my writing journey it was a tool for my grieving process, sending like unsent letters, and then how my “letters” became directed at my community for the sake of advocacy, and how finally I am excited to use my poems as an mixed expression of my own experiences and the social change I want to create, and how going to Iowa specifically would help me learn how to make my work the best vehicle for what I am wanting to share.
I haven’t been able to read the rec letter, but it was from my english teacher last year who I was very close with, and I was honestly by far the most involved student in that class. she was the one who pushed me to start sending out my work in the first place.
overall, I think it was mostly just that I put a lot of time into the application, and wrote 3 versions of the essay before finding one I liked lol

That’s amazing! And I get that, using writing as a tool in the grief process. Not to overshare but I know that writing has saved me a lot ever since my brother died a few months ago.

I just got in for fiction session 2, but I’m not a big writer and kind of did the whole app the night it was due. I’m just kinda worried I’m not as into this as everyone else who got in cuz I hadn’t realized it was such (ish) a big deal. But whatever, whatever.
Does anyone think they’d let me switch to session 1? I’m waiting to hear back from a pretty prestigious internship in my area, but it overlaps with IYWS, and I’d really like to attend both programs.
