The preliminary UC Application numbers have been posted on the UCOP website. Here is a screen shot of the data.
Do you have last year’s numbers handy so we can do a side by side comparison? If not, no worries, I can look them up
Here is the link for 2015-2023. I do not have the screenshot for the 2023 summary.
Total number of Freshman applicants is about the same. The number of Transfers is up from 2023.
I think the following table (for FRESHMAN applicants only) should be correct, I used the above numbers from your screen shot @Gumbymom and I put it in a table with numbers from this UCOP pdf summarizing 2021-2023 numbers.

(I typed the numbers in manually since copy paste got the tables all scrambled, if anyone sees a mistake let me know and I will edit)
I’m curious about the ‘honors’ courses category- is this for 10th and 11th grade only? Include 9th or planned 12th grade?
Honors courses – the number of year long courses taken or planned in 10th-12th grades. These are Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate Higher Level (IB HL) and designated Standard Level (IB SL) courses, UC-transferable college courses and (for students from CA high schools) UC-certified honors courses.
The LA Times article is behind a paywall. Yahoo has a reprint.
Applications from out-of-state residents fell, possibly a reflection of state goals focused on keeping more seats for Californians. Texas sent the most applicants

Thanks for the table. I hope you don’t mind that I added comparison columns to show the year over year percentage increase from 2023, and the percentage increase from 2021.
Interesting to see that the relatively larger increases are at the “less popular” UC campuses.

Yes! My guess is that this is due to some combination of
- more awareness of how difficult it is to be admitted to the “more popular” campuses
- more appreciation for what the “less popular” campuses have to offer (perhaps boosted by rise in rankings)
But it’s also interesting to look closely at the CA / OOS / Int’l patterns, not just the overall numbers, because this seems to differ a lot by campus as well. For example, the percentage increase in int’l applicants for Merced is quite dramatic.
Thank you all for the hard work it took to provide the information. UCI in its acceptance letter gave this:
“Your accomplishments shone brightly among a record-breaking number of applicants this year (147,000 to be exact)” as the number of application UCI got this year.
Not sure how they count this, but I suspect the figure is somewhere in between?
They’re probably including transfer apps in that numver
Someone posted this table in UCI thread right after I posted my last post. Not sure where the numbers are from, but I’m just shocked.
Those numbers are from the UCOP website that I posted at the top of this discussion thread: Fall 2024 preliminary application tables | UCOP
Given the sheer number of applicants… I think UCs should now start doing a 50% refund on application fees for all rejected candidates…
Or start selling T-Shirts that say “I got rejected by.”
2024 UC Admission table is out:
On first glance, things that stood out:
Berkeley’s number/percentage of international students.
I don’t remember the gender identity breakdown by numbers before. Percentagewise, they all look very similar. By number, 50% of the total UC trans/non binary students are at UCSC.
Am I reading that right that only 67% of UCLA admits were in-state?
