Since joining the ACC in 2004, Miami has won 0 ACC football championships. How about winning your own league before talk of getting “promoted” to the premier leagues.
In volleyball news, the Aggies swept KY! I never cheer for the Aggies, but I do enjoy chaos when it doesn’t involve my teams.
Northwestern University Wildcats Quarterback Aiden Chiles is the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and another outfit rated the NU QB the highest among all D 1 QBs for the week.
Northwestern plays at U Oregon this Saturday. Current NU offensive coordinator Chip Kelley coached at U Oregon for several years as offensive coordinator and later as head coach before going to the NFL as an offensive coordinator. (Also was head coach at UCLA and head coach in the NFL for two different teams & was offensive coordinator at Ohio State University.)
U Oregon just fired or demoted their offensive coordinator; some fear that U Oregon Ducks will try to hire Chip Kelley away from NU to become U Oregon’s offensive coordinator once again.
I feel bad for the injured MSSt QB, who is out for the season.
New CTE research.
Full study:
Went to see UT vball get out the brooms against Georgia. ![]()
University of Oregon’s starting QB is still suffering from a “severe concussion” after being targeted with a cheap shot hit by a USC defensive back couple of weeks ago. Out for season.
I wonder if the Oregon QB will ever play football again or if he should ever play again after suffering such a severe concussion.
I saw the hit. It was designed to cripple the sliding QB–and it has. The offending player should have been banned for the rest of the season as the vicious hit was totally unnecessary.
Deep thought of the day:
Which came first–chicken soup or vaccines ?
Had to be vaccines–right ? Because if chicken soup had been invented first, then why would the world need vaccines ?
(Somehow this got posted in the wrong thread. Sorry.)
Agree (noting I haven’t seen the play). S21 actually sent me that CTE study when it came out last week. He said ‘thanks for not letting me play football.’ Which is huge. He wanted to play football so badly. Every year for 15 years or so at tryout time he would come to us and say please please please can I play football. And every year we said no.
My boxing career ended at age 15 after my parents attended a sold out pro-am fight night during which I was in the first bout of the evening as my manager & trainer had two professionals on the card.
Although amateurs, both I and my opponent were sparring partners for professional boxers. My opponent had much more experience than I and intended to turn pro after this last amateur fight. This was his last fight ever as I knocked him out after beating him badly for a few rounds. Completely fair fight, but I blame the referee for not stopping the fight sooner.
The sold-out crowd loved the brutality. The fight made the cover of a local newspaper. Prepping boxers, managers, and trainers came out of the locker rooms to watch due to the constant roar of the large crowd of spectators.
Truthfully, I could have severely injured or killed my much more experienced opponent that night, but I refused to hit him when he was clearly out on his feet. This was the referee’s first public bout.
Decades later, I am still disgusted about the thought of what might have happened had I not shown restraint.
My parents were horrified and threatened my manager & trainer if they ever let me box again at their gym. That ended my boxing career. And I loved boxing.
Decades later, I realize that my parents were right to end my participation in my favorite sport.
(We,even though amateurs, did not wear protective headgear during the pro-am event.)
No - unless he wants a shortened life span.
I wonder if that is coached - what you said, to cripple.
Sad.
Currently, Syracuse is beating SMU 20 to 10 at halftime. Surprising to me as SMU is a rapidly rising ACC program with substantial funding. (SMU was favored by about 9 points.)
But SMU, by joining the ACC, took a haircut financially to get in.
It’s funny - schools like SMU and Cal, were desperate to get in.
On the flipside, Miami and FSU can’t wait to get out.
Nonetheless, most importantly - go CUSE!!! And the B10 should have scooped us up vs Rutgers. What were they thinking taking Rutgers?
Concussions occur throughout one’s playing days.
Son played in an 8th grade tackle football league on the north side of Atlanta. Vicious hitting occurred as several players were the sons of Atlanta Falcons pro football players as well as sons of Atlanta Hawks players as many of Atlanta’s pro athletes live on the north side of Atlanta.
Son was a defensive tackle. Knocked out (with resulting concussion) the Quarterback from a Gwinnett County Christian school which has won many state championships for high school football. This QB was known nationally and was recruited for college as an 8th grader ! His dad was an all-pro offensive lineman for the Atlanta Falcons.
This is an important heads-up as even very superior athletes who mature early can suffer concussions even though competing with others of the same age (in this case age 13 or 14).
The string of concussions continue throughout high school & college. Head injuries/brain injuries can occur during practice or during games against other schools.
I love football–especially college football. But football is a dangerous sport. I’m watching the U Arizona versus Texas Tech college football game. An Arizona player,a freshman, was just injured and is laying on the field. The TV announcers stated that the network will not show the injury as it is too gruesome to see.
Today’s football players are bigger, faster, and stronger than in the past decades. We need better protective gear and stricter rules regarding illegal hits & unnecessary roughness. Players, even during high school, can sustain life-long injuries.
@Mwfan1921 was smart to prohibit her son from playing tackle football during high school. Few get D-1 scholarships and very few become professionals. Not worth the risk.
Fortunately for us, our son’s first love has always been, and remains, soccer. Accordingly, he switched sports during high school. Clearly, he has more sense than his football crazed father.
Don’t let him head
Injuries there too but I agree, a much better sport although research shows otherwise (from elbows, etc)
Golden Gophers-so close…
I watched the end of that game and was so bummed!
Brett Yormark leaving the Big 12. He’s been a fantastic commissioner.
UNC playing Miami tough.
USC giving it to Ohio State.
Bill Belichick is single.
What a week !!
I think Yormark is a punk.
I can see him coming off too strongly for some but there’s no denying what he’s accomplished. I’m sure he’s going to getting a big time role, hence he’s leaving.
