2026 college football (and volleyball) thread

I’m not particularly a fan of football, but all 3 of our “family” college teams won this week, and my H was particularly happy about the Iowa game - Go Hawkeyes

I agree that I’d like to keep comments on what’s happening this season and not litigate every team’s past transgressions. There was a time when UT earned the moniker Book 'Em Horns, but let’s talk about this season.

@1214mom that ending was NUTS! Congrats to H!

After it became a national story and there were clips showing him (and several teammates) celebrating or effectively doing the same long after it was clear that Moore wasn’t getting up any time soon.

6 Georgia (current or former) players have been arrested in 2026. This is not 20 years ago. Im not sure how it’s even comparable.

Xzavier McLeod (September 2026): The junior defensive lineman was arrested and charged with misdemeanor trespass for property damage just hours after announcing he was stepping away from the team.

Ja’Marley Riddle (May 2026): The safety was arrested on two felony drug charges (possession of a controlled substance/marijuana distribution) and a misdemeanor speeding charge in Glynn County.

Zachariah Branch (April 2026): The former star wide receiver was arrested on misdemeanor obstruction charges outside an Athens bar days before the NFL draft.

Chris Cole and Darren Ikinnagbon (February 2026): Both linebackers were arrested on misdemeanor charges including reckless driving and speeding.

London Seymour (February 2026): The freshman defensive lineman was arrested on multiple felony charges for criminal property damage.

Dontrell Glover and Bo Walker (December 2025): The freshmen players were arrested for misdemeanor shoplifting, which was later resolved via a pretrial agreement in early 2026.

Nyier Daniels (November 2025): The offensive lineman was dismissed from the team following an arrest on multiple felony charges, including fleeing police during a high-speed driving incident. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9]

Would you like more details on the disciplinary actions taken by coach Kirby Smart or information on a specific player’s case?

I’m not speaking about these things in the same breath as any kind of comparison. To be clear, I was clear about the context for bringing up the Stephens hit: it serves as a distraction from the Simmons taunt penalty, because that threated to be a story until Stephens and his stupidity showed up. That’s my only point. Otherwise, I was just responding to your post that a central enforcement body for taunting penalties would be too subjective and the better idea is to leave it up to team discipline. That’s all. There is no comparison between the two actions, except the Stephens play also involved unacceptable taunting/celebration that was incongruent with the circumstances (that he caused) on the field.

Still, I have to say: acting like you’re urinating on someone in front of 100,000 people and a TV audience (or really anywhere) is pretty lowbrow behavior. If he were my son, I’d be more than just a little humiliated.

I was reacting to the 10,000 number. I don’t think there are that many people on this year’s team, though opposing teams may feel like there is at times.

are you saying we can’t expect any better. I think we can.

You don’t have to be an esteemed academic or a politician (bad example, btw) to be expected to conduct yourself with a minimal degree of decorum. JC, where are when we when get to the point that a guy behaving like Stephens is just to be expected? To be clear, while it wasn’t quite a “bang bang” play, as we say, and he had plenty of time to pull up, I do empathize with the fact that the kids are playing this sport at 100 miles an hour and they are hyped up and thus do things.

The thing with which most people took issue was his behavior well after the play while Moore lay motionless on the field and after he was given the targeting penalty. On that point, yes, I think we can expect better.

I personally know a lot of current and ex- division 1 football players. Trust me, there is no need to lump them all in together in the Stephens and Simmons category. Not at all.

I think you’ve conflated my post with another post in the thread, and that is a separate conversation from the one I’m having. And his use of the number 10,000 was clearly intended hyperbole, but again, separate point and convo that does not involve me. Or maybe you were responding to both posts in the reply to me. In any event, …

Yes, that comment wasn’t directed at you. No offense intended.

That we assumed USC would penalize him or that Sark would call it out for the trash it was in his game.

Now USC has penalized the young man but was it because it’s the right thing to do or due to public reaction?

My point is that when an ass hat like Sark leads the team, you shouldn’t expect better because he doesn’t care except about the penalty part. The fact is, he isn’t better - off the field. But he wins so UT is ok with him.

Top tier for football coaches are hired to win, by any means, not to grow and develop them. Some are legit leaders in all facets but many are not. And it’s beyond football. Hoops - same thing - crooked Will Wade back at LSU.

There’s too much money at stake. This isn’t years ago players that you may know. These are professionals - even the young man I know of at APP State. Paid well. He’s a pro. And his dad acknowledges that.

Yes, on that point we are in 100% agreement. Leaving it up to them team is going to rarely involve a star player being suspended unless there is public pressure to do so. I will say, though, there are coaches who will sacrifice a performing player if he feels that not doing so will have team culture impacts. Cristobal’s first few years in Miami involved him getting rid of lots of dudes who could play because they were locker room cancers and had a negative affect on team culture. But otherwise, yeah, they don’t like to be without their players over individual instances of behavior mistakes unless it’s truly egregious. No, I don’t think Lincoln Riley suspends Stephens w/o it becoming a story. No question in my mind. He’s not that kind of coach.

Just for the record, I don’t think Simmons should be suspended. Lowbrow, embarrassing and unacceptable, yes. Give him a warning and let him know he’s done for X number of games (regardless of which games they are) if he does it again. That was, IMO, more an issue of really poor judgement by a kid who was good and cranked up and less of a character issue. Stephens is a character issue. Not sure I’d want that guy on my team after that, and if I did keep him around I’d be watching him very closely.

I talked to ds2 about the game yesterday, and it occurs to me some of this might be generational. I didn’t realize what Brown did was a TikTok thing. Ds2 didn’t approve but did think it was funny, presumably because of the TikTok context so I think people who realized what it was gave him a bit of a pass. I just thought it was gross. :woman_shrugging:

Cristobal was new. He cleaned out what he thought was inferiority. That’s what they all do when they arrive.

No, he sent some guys away who became starters immediately. There was a lot of team culture problems after Manny Diaz left. He was a weak coach and the inmates were running the asylum before he left. How he managed to salvage his career at Duke, other than it being a place with modest expectations, I’ll never know. He was never great at Miami and got progressively worse as time went on. Cristobal inherited a lot of player problems, including player / parent problems. Manny recruited a lot of bad families.

They weren’t all inferior. Not by a long shot.

I know he won’t but wish he’d quit…but that’s good news.

I agree, and I hope he’s able to recover quickly and completely from this.

When the latest study came out reporting at least 25% of former professional football players who died between 2016 and 2021 showed evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), I lost my enjoyment for the game. I believe the price players pay in injuries has become too high. But I know I’m in the minority. It’s a wildly popular spectator sport, and I even get why it is.

I’m watching now - and it’s fun (the Broncos / Rams) but there’s been not just CTE, but ALS - and these guys say they’d do it again.

I get it - the rush, money, fame - but it’s just bad.

Congratulations to the Minnesota Golden Gophers!
